The Short: I'm a single young adult with a college degree and student loan debt. I live in a sterile small city with limited job prospects. I want to move out and get an entry-level or temporary job in a coastal U.S. city (NYC, LA, SF, Seattle). Please walk me through the logistics and help me devise a plan, as well as offer any advice you have on making it on your own in a new city (essentially, how to be an independent, self-sufficient adult).

What resources would I need to move to New York? I've been offered (unofficially by the boss of my boss) to change jobs within my company and move 400 miles away to the head office in NYC. The ball is in my court to figure out what I would need to make this happen, but I am at a loss as to where to begin the negotiation!

Where's the best place for UX/UI/IA/ID people to work in New York City? I'm an interaction designer/user experience person at an agency in NYC looking for something new. Khoi Vinh's essay,
The End of Client Services, has me thinking that it's time to step away from agency life.

What kind of table do I want and where can I get it? We've been unhappy with our dining table for some time now, it's too big (tall), it scratches easy, and seems to require near constant care because it's also serving as two people's work table. I'm looking for a small informal table that can work easily as a dining table and a work desk. Is there a name for the kind of table I want and where can I find it in the NYC area. Details follow.

I remember reading an article in 2008 about an informal gathering in New York of people who do various kinds of freelance work; they met in a coffee shop, I believe. I think it may have been in New York magazine or the NYTimes, but I can't find it. Does anyone else remember this? Or know of a gathering that meets this description?

I'm in an unusual situation and it's proving extremely difficult to change things. Short version: I've been out of work for five years mostly due to severe depression, anxiety, and an abusive relationship, and have been trying to establish myself since recovering with no luck. I'm a bookworm with a degree who seeks an entry-level publishing position, but will take other (hopefully related, but not an absolute requirement right now) positions in the interest of establishing a recent job history for myself. (Extra long version inside...)
