[igiveupfilter] Trying to export my current wordpress-run blog onto a new wordpress-run blog. I keep getting an XML error that says "XML document must have a top level element. Error processing resource 'file:///C:/Users/damnjezebel/Desktop/wordpress.2008-05-16.xml". I've tried this link which helped me the last time I moved my blog, but that's not working this time. New blog at Wordpress.com. Would like to use w.bloggar as my desktop editor for posts. Everything's configured properly and looking great, except for this error I get when I start up w.bloggar: "w.bloggar: 401 / Your blog server returned the following error message: / Sorry, you must be able to edit posts on this blog in order to view categories." I have a personal blog running under Movable Type. I want to move to WordPress. I've exported the existing entries to a text file, so that's good. However, a couple years ago my previous MT install tanked (similar to this). I cannot access it. I have several years worth of posts that are stuck in a database that I can't get to. I've been gradually moving these by hand to my existing MT install, but that's a pain in the ass. Is there some automated way to crawl/scrape the existing HTML files in order to retrieve these "lost" entries? Some way to break back into a corrupt MT database? Some way to repair it? I'd like to build a publicly editable online database. Each record of the database will consist of images and a few bits of meta data and maybe some Flickr-style tags. I don't have the skills to build a custom database nor the money to pay someone to build it.
Is a wiki the way to go? If so, which free (or cheap) wiki software do you recommend for someone with very little programming knowledge?
If I remove the "publicly editable" requirement, would a plain ol' WordPress blog with tags be the cleanest option?

Website/Weblog/Apache/Chroot/mod_rewrite Wordpress?
I've been hired to create website content for a record store. That's turned into also being in charge of the website creation/management. They already have hosting, a virtual server that uses chroot to keep separate clients separate. I had hoped to use Wordpress, and the guys who hired me want something that looks bloggish, even while maintaining their eBay store as the ecommerce backend (posts/album descriptions with samples would link to eBay auctions). The problem is that Wordpress needs to use mod_rewrite access (in Apache) to create permalinks when content is added (through .htaccess), and the host has said that mod_rewrite is a security risk for the rest of his clients unless we go for dedicated hosting. He's talked about using read/write permissions access to circumvent the need for .htaccess. [more inside]

I'm a TypePad user, moving to Movable Type. I know that MT is much more powerful, but out of the (virtual) box, it is lacking in a lot of the cool features (book lists, photo albums, blogrolls) that TypePad has built in.
What's the best place for a n00b like me to go to start bringing MT into line with what I had in TypePad? I've been slogging through the MT Plugins site, but if there's an even easier guide out there, I'll gladly admit I'm an MT loser and just paint-by-numbers!
