What's the best wireless phone service for the NYC area?
I'm as fed up with Verizon as the next guy, but my limited experience with an iPhone in Manhattan left me with dropped/missed calls and very intermittent access to maps, etc. (unless already cached).
Putting aside fun features that usually work, and imagining your life depended on receiving or making a phone call, which network would you choose?*
*Please speak from experience with a carrier and nevermind the silly games they play (e.g., crippling bluetooth, etc.); I simply need a service that doesn't miss or drop calls.

Mathfilter: How many text messages (SMS) will fit on a floppy disk, or a CD-ROM? Once that number is derived, how much will it cost to send or receive that many messages if a consumer pays per message (American carriers or Intl carriers would be great)? [more inside]

9-11 Technology Filter: I have never been able to even get signal on my Blackberry 8200 (GSM) within 10 seconds of liftoff, so how were cell phone calls completed from hijacked planes on 9-11? Specifically, given the prevailing handset, carrier, and tower technologies present in the Boston, NY, and DC metro and intervening areas at the time, and given the flight paths and altitudes of the hijacked planes, how were passengers able to complete cellphone calls to loved ones? Do they not kick in if your call starts before 9pm? I am a new Cingular subscriber (yeah, I know, the rollover minutes seduced me), and I was shocked to see a 58 minute call logged to my daytime minutes. The call had begun at 8:53 and I assumed that logically at 9:00 my nighttime minutes would kick in. Naturally, this is not the case and I ate up 1/7th of my total monthly anytime minutes on this one call. Do other wireless carriers keep you on daytime minutes for calls that begin before 9 and extend on past 9? [more inside]

Skype with a Mac.. I'm thinking of starting to use Skype, but there's one thing holding me back. What wireless USB phones are compatible with the Mac, and where can I get them in the UK? I know Ipevo now provide drivers for the Free-1 phone, but wireless is important to me - without it my wife will never use it.

I've heard that if you're a Verizon Wireless customer, the reps are allowed to give you a new phone four months before your contract is actually supposed to renew - sort of a secret rule. Is this true?
