How do I save all Windows XP (32 bit) updates on my PC, burn them to a DVD, and then use that DVD so I don't have to download them again?

XP. Trying to get backed up files off old desktop computer. Using windows explorer, I cannot 'see' a partition on secondary hard drive, like the partition is hidden. But I *can* see the files when I search for *.mp3 or *.jpg or *.txt over the whole machine; they can be seen, through search facility, read only, in a partition that doesn't even show up in win explorer. I'm not certain if I somehow hid that partition and if I did I've no idea how I did it. I want to get these files off that desktop and to a place I can access them anywhere anytime, but right now I can't access them at all. Any help you can provide greatly appreciated.

My parents computer isn't booting, and it's due to a corrupt ntfs filesystem. I'd like to run CHKDSK, but when I try to boot into the repair console, it requires an administrator password, which we don't have (second-hand computer). I can't use a password reset disk, because it won't recognize the disk (presumably due to the corrupt filesystem). Catch-22 - what now?

My brother-in-law's windows XP machine has died, with a STOP error of 7e (ooooo5).. Sometimes it also references aspi.sys. Sometimes it makes it to the 'windows' screen, then hangs there loading endlessly.
I suspected a rootkit because of a virus warning before it crashed, but I downloaded a couple of Linux rescue CDs and they didn't work - spitting out a variety of error messages (couldn't mount fs, init cancelled, or just a stream of hex numbers).
I've also tried safe mode with and without console - it just resets without comment.
The computer is very dusty, so my next step is to open it up and reseat the components after giving them a bit of compressed air - any thoughts on other stuff I could try, or components that might be at fault? I guess the motherboard is the obvious place for a problem - plausible?

I bought the program new years ago, and have legally installed it on three of my Dell machines with no problems. WTF? It appears that I turned off the restore function and automatic updates, I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Any hiv-ers know why this occured?

I'm in Windows XP. Whenever I manage files in various apps, like "save as" or "open file," there's that stack of location icons on the left such as
My Recent Documents, Desktop, My Computer, My Network Places, etc.
I want to destroy the
My Recent Documents and
My Network Places locations and add a custom folder or drive to that stack of location icons--or whatever the heck you call that. There must be a way! (
Apologies if this has been asked, but I don't even know what that stack of icons is called so I can't search for it...)

It's hard to gather support information (especially since VB6 is about 8.7 million years old) and so I was wondering if anyone out there can help me track down a more recent copy of the runtime file in question—msflxgrd.ocx—or otherwise fix the problem?

I have a client system that has Vista preinstalled. The client wants XP Pro on the system.
It's a laptop, and the manufacturer (HP) only provides Vista drivers. Will the Vista drivers work in Windows XP?
Is there a hardware-equivalent HP system that is the Windows XP version that I can get drivers for to use on this one? It's an HP DV6235NR.
Thanks!

I'm getting a new computer in a few weeks, but I have a TV capture card I want to transfer from my old machine into the new one. Since it's going to be an XP machine, in light of the weird "hardware configuration" key they built into the software, should I install the capture card
before I boot the machine for the first time, or should I wait until afterwards? On the one hand, I'd like to make sure the machine works as is before I crack it open, but on the other hand, I would
not like to spend a bunch of time on hold with Microsoft to get the damned OS unlocked. How touchy is the XP hardware configuration key? (I know, I know, buy a Mac...)
