Doing phone support (no physical access) Windows 7 network... 4 computers... Let's call them Laptop, Front, Data1, Data2. The original call was for a computer (Front) that couldn't see the local network or the internet. After playing around with it, having them replug wifi adapter, loading the "Netgear Genie" software and doing ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, I got it so that the computer could see the internet and 3 out of 4 computers on the local network/workgroup. I've got a laptop in a closet at work. I've connected it to a flatscreen TV in our office lobby, via VGA connection. The intent was to remote into the laptop so I could add new content to display on the monitor. ("welcome" messages to visitors, and so forth) The laptop is set to display to the TV. But all I see on the TV on the PC input is the generic windows screensaver. It won't show the logged in view. Help?

We're upgrading a work computer (both old and new have Windows 7 installed). It is ideal that we keep everything the same, including current versions of installed programs. My Windows knowledge is fuzzy at best, but my understanding is that the migration assistant that comes with it won't move programs. How do I do this?

My newish home-built desktop PC stopped sleeping/hibernating and restarting/shutting down in most cases. I recently installed a program that allows it to do these things, but only while the program is running. I'm looking for a permanent fix if possible. Details within. [more inside]
This is a long shot, but where can I buy a legitimate full retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate? Everything on eBay is counterfeit. Even an extremely genuine-looking COA in a sealed box leads to counterfeit DVDs (peel-off stickers) that can only be identified in-person (yes, I ran into that), and a "working" activation code is most likely a stolen MSDN time-limited developer code. Any ideas? My last resort would be an OEM disc, since those are still being sold through legit channels, but those are essentially single-use per machine.
My new Dell desktop with Windows 7 / 8.1 Pro arrived with no product key label on the box or anywhere else. I've bought several 7 / 8 PCs (not Dell) for work and this is a first. Before I descend into Dell Hell, could someone shed some light on this? [more inside]

All of my laptops inevitably, inexorably slow down noticeably, way before they should. I know this happens with all computers. I am reasonably tech-savvy. But my current ThinkPad slowed down in the first three months. I want someone to take my laptop, figure out what's making it slow (software and/or hardware), and fix it all. I just want my computer to not be slow. Does such a person exist in SF? Who are they, where can I find them, and how much do they charge?

I'm having trouble connecting to the internet or to my cable modem. I just bought a used (Dell, 64-bit) laptop. I've been using a Motorola Surfboard SB1501U cable modem plugged in through ethernet on my old (Acer, 32-bit) laptop. I plugged it into the Dell and it immediately connected to the internet. There was a couple of other unrelated issues though, but there is no factory reset option and I thought I'd start with a clean slate. So, I made an installation disk and reinstalled the OS, W7 for a 64-bit computer. Everything went smoothly. But now I can't connect to the internet, either through the ethernet or the USB and installation disk. [more inside]

Dear HiveMind, I am finally waking up, smelling the coffee ... and seeing that I must say goodbye to XP. My machines are old (but not ancient) ThinkPads - one T60 and three X60s maxed out on RAM (systems built 2006-2008). I'm looking for an honorable seller of Win 7. [more inside]
This seems to be a harder problem to solve than I expected. My venerable Umax Astra 4450 scanner has a transparency cover -- it has a large area which lights up to scan transparencies and such -- but it doesn't have drivers newer than Windows XP. Running XP is less and less of an option these days. So, I'm shopping for a new scanner with a transparency cover...and I'm not having much luck. Suggestions? [more inside]

My dad passed away on Friday, and my mom is eager to get into his computer (Song Vaio running Windows 7) and Blackberry (Bold). Both are password protected. Is there any way to change the password on each without wiping the data? I'm fairly computer literate, and my father will have every software disk he's ever received. We also have access to his email if that helps with the Blackberry. Thanks.

This is a second-hand office computer, running Windows 7. Every time I turn it on, a box pops up asking to install C:\Windows\Installer\cb9465.msi. I have recently acquired the keyboard for the IBM 5150 Personal Computer. It also came with a DIN-5 to PS/2 adapter, so I plugged into my desktop, and everything screeched to a halt -- typing occurred very delayed from the key presses, mouse became inoperable. Is this the keyboard, the adapter, some software incompatibility, or something else completely? [more inside]
The nut of the question/problem is this: When I use high-contrast mode in Windows 7, people are receiving emails from me where the text is blank. Is this because windows 7 changes the font to white for me to see it, and then emails that same font to users who have white backgrounds? How can I fix this? I really don't want to ask for special software accommodation at work. I'm private and would really rather just fix it on my own and move on. Snowflakes abound inside. [more inside]

The 6th grader has to have a new computer. (We homeschool and half of the kiddo's classes are online.) I was very happy with the Dell that had Windows 7 (stolen out of the car this morning.) I'm trying to set up a computer for my son. I've got it so instead of launching Windows Explorer, it instead silently loads up a batch file. My problem is working with the darn thing, and getting it to do what I want. Long story short, I want Steam Bit Picture Mode, the VoIP software Mumble, and, if I can, some form of Google Hangouts to load up on computer launch. My current batch file is included after the break. [more inside]
I have a large folder containing dozens of folders, each of which contain multiple subfolders, each of which in turn contain several files; folders, subfolders and files all have unique names. In Windows 7 I can expand all the folders to view the folders, subfolders and files; what I need is a copy-able version of that nested organization of data that I can "paste" or otherwise output into Word or even notepad. Possible? [more inside]
Hi, I want to get a refurb PC running Windows 7 (for occasional use), get one of the beefy, business-use laptops that cost crazy money about 3-4 years ago. Now I see these machines for $200-$300. I near good things about the Lenovo t400 & t61, but I'm open, also wonder if people can suggest places like Newegg, etc., that are good or to be avoided. Thanks!
I've seen something that pops up interrupting what I'm doing. It's from HP, it pops up a black box. I may have uninstalled it. Now my friend has the same problem. I want to make sure that I uninstall/deactivate the right thing. What's it called?

I am running a fully updated iTunes 11 install on a fully patched Windows 7 machine, and I cannot get iTunes to disable keyboard control. Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced gets me to the check box for "enable full keyboard navigation", but it won't stay off. Related, I suspect, is the lack of track information on the Mini-Player. Everything I've found says that I should turn off Keyboard Navigation in order to get track information to appear on the MiniPlayer. But I can't do that. Is there a secret handshake I don't know, or am I doomed to an only-sort-of-useful MiniPlayer? (and let's not even talk about how the MiniPlayer won't stay on top, even if I've told it "Keep MP on top....")
I have an interesting file syncing problem. As part of my responsibilities, I have to keep track of changes in the US export regulations. The Dept. of Commerce makes the regulations available in two formats, HTML and PDF. The HTML versions are oddly formatted so I prefer the PDF versions even if they are harder to search. They're available in PDF on this page. I have been regularly going out to the page and downloading relevant documents that have changed but I'd like to automate this if I can. But there are some gotchas. [more inside]

We recently got upgraded to Windows7 here at work. (Yay?) For some reason, everything now looks like crap unless I set my resolution to the "recommended" monitor setting, 1920 x 1200. Which I did. And now the palette labels in InDesign 6 are teeny-tiny. It's especially awful in my long list of paragraph styles. I boosted the default font size through Windows, but that only affects the drop-down menus, not the labels. This is a stupid question but...please hope me! It has proven to be un-Googleable.

I usually navigate my Windows 7 Explorer windows via keyboard. I type the name of a directory, then hit enter to open it. But when the new directory comes up, typing finds the first filename alphabetically, which would be fine if I had my directories sorted by file name, but I do not - they're sorted by file type instead. Once a file is selected after typing the first letter, Windows's selection continues looking in the display order (first by type then alphabetically) but does not wrap to the beginning of the directory, so if I was trying to select a folder and ended up with a file, then I either have to click in the window or wait a few seconds and hit Home to get to the start of the window. How do I change this so it will initially give preference to file type and not just file names? [more inside]
