I reinstalled Win2K for business use at home. What utilities can I install that will help me manage & oversee system processes that get put on this computer over the next year or so? What's that program that allows me to run a Win2K "microwindow" to containerize suspicious freeware/spyware.. VMS or something like that... is that worth having or does it seriously slow down the system? [more inside]

I need a form-to-email gateway script that works with Windows 2000 Server (SP4) and CDONTS or CDO.SYS to send the email. I'm thinking that the ASP port of Formmail is my best bet, but since I have no experience whatsoever with Windows Servers or ASP whatsoever, I'm a bit lost. What is my best (preferably free) option? I have my soundcard plugged into my stereo receiver and there's a "hum" that I can't seem to get rid of. My receiver is otherwise fine: no humming at all with anything else that's plugged into it. I'm using a Sound Blaster Live! with the latest drivers and patches, Windows200, and a cheapo Radio Shack cable (1/8" stereo -> RCA). Tweaking my windows mixer settings doesn't seem to help anything (with my windows master volume turned down I still get the hum). What steps should I follow to attempt to fix this? Will a better cable help? Could it be a software issue? Do I need to buy a new soundcard? If so, which one?

How can I download Internet Explorer 6 as a single file for installation on another computer (running Windows 2000)? This page only seems to give the me the option of downloading a small install program but I still need to be online to actually install the whole thing. My Win2000 machine has IE 5.5 and I'm having trouble getting online.

Risks in putting a win2k drive in a new motherboard? I understand this is possible by either doing a repair/reinstall and pulling the drive out before reboot or using MS's sysprep tool, but has anyone done this? I'm assuming this is a risky operation and I should probably ghost the drive before attempting it, but if anyone has some tips or lessons of experience to share I would appreciate it.

Win2K: a crashed FTP transfer left several zero-K files on my desktop, which I cannot delete. I have tried Safe Mode, I've tried del/deltree/rmdir in DOS, I've tried MoveOnBoot, and nothing works. The files are not in use. No handles for them exist. The error messages are all variants of: "File cannot be found or does not exist." It's as if the delete function just can't see them, but I can see them right there in Windows Explorer. How can I delete these buggers?

How the #*(& do I re-enable Windows Update on my Win2K system? I've just spent three hours farting around with Google searches, registry and GPO hacking, and suchlike, all to no avail. Win2K - I had a risque pictue set as my desktop background. My in-laws are coming to stay for a week, and my machine is in the guest room. Since I already don't rate very highly with then, I swapped the background image to something very tame. However, during the startup process, the original image appears for a couple of seconds before being replaced by the new. Why does this happen, and how can I fix it?

How do I gain access to a Windows 2000 computer when I've forgotten the password both to my account and the admin's?
I have physical access (it's here next to me) and it has a disk shared (can't remember if it's C: or a subdirectory, and can't look because it prompts for a password). I have other Linux and Windows machines available on the same network. However, it was kept up-to-date with patches until about 6 months ago. [more inside]

I just bought a USB 2.0 4Port Hub for a Windows 2000 machine with USB 1.1 ports. I'm getting a "This device will not start. (Code 10)" error and none of the devices I plug into the hub will work. I've Googled and found suggestions from installing Service Pack 4 (Which I have already done) to someone suggesting that 2.0 will just not work on a 1.1 port. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I hang my head in shame as I post this, but here goes: in my zealous effort to eliminate browser helper objects on 2 Windows 2000 Pro Dells in our computer lab, I somehow seem to have eliminated IE and Mozilla's ability to browse, as well. I can ping our webserver so I know they can get online, but I keep getting "unable to resolve this (or any other) web page" errors. Do I now have to reinstall IE or wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows to make this work? Or....

I installed a new OS (mmyes, it was M$ W2k) on my computer on a new hard drive. The old system and the new OS now work next to each other, but I have a technical matter that I can't solve. On the old OS (W98), if I say "Shut down", it will also automatically shut down the power of the computer after it shuts down Windows.
The W2k OS doesn't do that, and while it's not a big issue, I have enough of the neurotic in me to want it to work on the W2k as well. Where and how do I make it do that?

Is there a way to send a message to everyone connected to a Windows 2000 machine (i.e., all the people I see when I type "net session")? I've tried this before, and wound up sending the message to everyone in the entire company -- and I'd prefer not to do that again.
