What is this mysterious process that hijacked my shortcut? I was using Photoshop CS2 and entered the shortcut key for "Save for Web" (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S) and instead of getting the Save for Web dialog, a very minimalist login box appeared. Intrigued, I brought up the Task manager, right-clicked on the "Login" entry in the list, and selected "Go To Process." The process turned out to be C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vidifker.exe. [more inside]

It's time to replace our desktop computer. After threads like this about the sluggishness of Vista, I'd prefer to get XP Pro, but it appears that some vendors, such as HP, only offer Vista. I'd rather not buy a computer with Vista and then install XP. Ideally, the new box would come with XP Pro and include a coupon for Vista that will still be valid in one or two years when Microsoft will presumably gets its act together. I just know I can't be the first person to ever do this, but I haven't been able to find an answer. I religiously back up my files from my local drive to my network every day, but it appears that yesterday, while I was in a hurry, I actually copied the files from my network drive down to my local drive, thus overwriting a very full day of work on one particular file. Is there anyway I can get back the version that was stored on my local drive or am I, as I fear, screwed? Also, when I try to search my local drive for all the files with the same extensions (*.as) in hopes that I actually just saved it in the wrong place, Windows XP tells me I have no files with that extension, even though I can see that I do. Is it possible that my problems are bigger than my own incompetence?

My office computer operates Windows XP with Word 2000. (I'm a Mac person at home so no lectures please...) About once a week or so, a Word doc will freeze up on me forcing me to hit the good old Ctrl+Alt+Del and End Task. I would say 50% of the time when I open Word again, the document I was working on comes up as a recovered document (phew!). The other 50% of the time, I open Word and... no recovered document (!!!). What gives? Why the discrepancy? How can I guarantee that a recovered document will come up all the time and not just when the computer feels like it? Aside from searching through a million temp files, is there an easy way to get the version I was working on back if it doesn't come up automatically? (Yes, I save as often as I can, but I'm only human.) Sorry if this has been answered before... I searched for a similar post, but didn't find one. Thank you!

I have been noticing a problem with my work laptop which is running XP SP2. If left up and running all night, then on most mornings i find out it is running very sluggishly with 100% CPU utilization (from the graph). First I thought may be it is firefox with its large number of open tabs. But I am not so sure anymore. killing firefox does not help. Also when I look at the CPU column in task manager i cant quite figure out what is causing that 100% utilization. None of high numbers on the CPU column look suspect. Obviously I am missing something here. One thing I am not 100% sure, and there may be something to it, is that I may have seen this problem more often when I am using wifi instead of wired LAN at home. But I need to verify this. After this happens I usually have to reboot the machine after bringing it back to work. I am able to suspend the machine and bring it to work and plug it into the work LAN. But unless I reboot it it really runs slow. Just logging out does not help. [more inside]

Yet another boring tech question: my main hard drive died on me. It's a Seagate, so I ran their diagnostic tool and it tells me I have 2 critical structure errors. What does this mean? Is there a way to fix it, or do I have to reformat, or worse, toss it out? Vielen Dank!

Early this morning I was woken up to my computer speakers making a very loud, awful static noise. I got out of bed, shut them off, turned on the monitor, found that my computer was restarting itself, and went back to bed. This afternoon when I got home from work I turned the speakers back on and they were still making the static noise AND I discovered that my second hard drive was no longer being recognized. So I restarted the computer and now everything is fine -- what's going on here? (Windows XP Home)

Can anyone help me find photo organization software with some specific characteristics? I use WinXP. I want to be able to place each photo in multiple categories, and I'd like to be able to output the categories as simple .html files, as that is my archival system of choice. I don't care about uploading to the web. Free is better, but I am willing to shell out a few bucks for the right software.
