As mentioned above, I can't watch videos linked from Twitter. I've found this as a possible solution but I feel stupid and contagious. Can you please step me through this as if I didn't know where to start?

I've got a Lenovo Thinkpad T400, which I bought a number of years ago. (Apparently they were built like tanks as I've only had to replace the fan and it's still going strong.) I'm on a tight budget and though the new Surface Pro 4 is pretty amazing, I just can't justify the cost. I'm skeptical on security arguments--are there any other substantive reasons I can't just keeping going with "tried and true"? [more inside]
Just a quick poll here: I have an older Windows XP machine that I never installed any Adobe products on, but now my wife wants to use that computer and *needs* to edit pdf files (nothing fancy). Should I upgrade to Windows 10, just so I can get the latest greatest Adobe pdf editor? Or try some sketchy PDF editor that still supports XP? Or..?
I have an old laptop running XP. The laptop actually dates from the Vista era, but I chose to have XP installed given the lousy rep that Vista had. I have seen this question. I have a newer laptop that I use for most of my word processing and internetting needs. I can retire the old laptop, but it still works so I'd rather not ditch it. Assuming I am not going to attempt to run XP on anything connected to the outside world, what can I do with this old laptop? [more inside]
I'm a late adaptor. After much happy gaming in Windows XP (via Boot Camp on my Mac), I am finally getting around to Vista-only games like Assassin's Creed III. So it's time to take the plunge and buy a copy of Vista on eBay. But which version? 64-bit or 32-bit? Service pack 1, 2, or 3? Starter, basic, or ultimate? Home or business? As somebody who isn't well-versed in Windows to begin with, I'm finding the choice a little overwhelming. I will be using Windows exclusively for gaming and don't care about any other features. Also, note that Windows Vista is the latest Windows my 2006 Mac Pro will support, so unfortunately "Skip straight to Windows 7 or 8" isn't an option. [more inside]

I just created a fresh installation of Windows XP with updates and drivers on my parents' computer. How can I preserve this installation, so that they can easily rollback (or even wipe the hard drive) to get back to this uncorrupted state after it is inevitably infected with some unremovable malware? The contents of the hard drive are under 4gb and can fit on a DVD. They don't store content locally, so I'm unconcerned with losing data. And, no, switching to Linux is not an option. Thanks!

I'm an advanced computer user and would like to know how Windows 7 compares with XP Pro. I'm clinging to the latter like Dagon to an emaciated villager but I know the time will come when I'll have to move on. Basic info about install size, resource hogging, software compatibility (particularly MS Office versions) and tweakability in terms of Windows' always annoying "security" functions will be greatly appreciated. I have tried Vista, only to run away from it screaming. I'll be sitting round the fire in the trashcan, looking forward to reading your thoughts.
My girlfriend is looking for a laptop. She's used to a Mac (desktop) and we've determined that the MacBook Pro 15-inch with 2.4 ghz Intel Core i5 processor (she's a photographer, so needs a decent amount of power). We're pretty sure she'd be happy with that, but we're trying to figure out how much we'd save by going Windows. Of course, trying to figure out an equivalent Windows to a Mac is a bit baffling (to me, anyway), so...I turn to the fine people of Askmetistan. What's a good comparable?

My friend has a small taxi business that uses Quickbooks. He has a primary computer that he and his dispatchers use when he is not there. He's having problems with his dispatchers downloading spyware/viruses, etc. I help him out with IT needs and suggested having a restricted account for his dispatchers. The problem is that QBs requires admin access to run. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get around this? The computer is running WindowsXP Pro.
