I have, over time, acquired a handful of external USB hard drives. Terabytes full of stuff... The problem being, I don't really want to pay to have them on all the time, if I don't need them. It occurs to me it would be nice to have a simple, elegant way of having your computer keep an index, of sorts, of what you store on your external devices, even if those devices aren't powered up... and then having it either power the device up, or prompt you to do so, in order to access the files you need. Is there a Windows-friendly solution for something like this?
I'm looking for a new Windows laptop, but pretty much everything that I've tried out has a keyboard that just suuuuuucks for me. Please hope me find something I won't detest typing on? Because, um, typing strings of words in succession is sometimes relevant to my interests. [more inside]

I use Macs. I use a flash drive to carry powerpoint presentations and other documents that I need to access on PC's running various flavours of Windows, which are not mine and I will not have administrator access to. Is there a way that I can protect/encrypt the drive in a way that will let me use it on both systems, without having to pre-install software on the Windows system? I do not need government-grade encryption, just something that will stop casual snoopers accessing the data if I lose the drive.

My four year old home-assembled Windows desktop PC was working fine until a recent move. Now, when I turn it on, it seems to be booting as usual but then powers down about 15-45 seconds after powering on. What's the likely problem? What do I do next? [more inside]
I've very recently (ie yesterday) got myself a brand new desktop PC! I would really like your advice on the best ways to keep it running at its best, protected from the nasty things that lurk on the internet (virii, malware, spyware etc) and set up to get the most out of our blossoming relationship... The machine runs on Windows 8. [more inside]

I have a Galaxy S4 and I generally transfer pics from it to a Windows 8.1 PC via USB, connecting up the Samsung as an external hard drive, navigating down to the DCIM folder on the camera's external SD card, then dragging & dropping. Recently, all my photos more recent than Feb 2014 are not visible via Windows Explorer even though the camera itself shows that those photos are indeed stored in the same folder on the external SD card that has all the pre-Feb photos. What gives? Are they hidden form view somehow?

Hi, I have 1 keyboard, 1 mouse, and two desktop computers to use with a 3-monitor setup. I would like to know the best way to use a triple monitor setup where I can click a button and switch back and forth between desktop A and desktop B for the single keyboard/mouse and the monitors. Consolidating files onto one machine is not an option. Are there devices or hubs I could plug the keyboard/mouse/monitors and desktops into that can do this? Amazon links would be great.
I need to give some video files to an editor who needs a Mac-formatted drive. I only run Windows. Happy to (have my producer) pay a reasonable amount for the privilege. What are your favorite programs for this purpose?
My Windows 7 PC (HP H8-1300z) has been working quite fine for the past 2 years but it recently began acting up and I can't figure out why. Everytime I attempt to do a copy/paste (backup) with large volume of folders from one drive to another (external) the PC freezes. The fan also randomly goes crazy for a minute or two and then stops. The current external hard drive I have is "WD' brand that I got at best buy and I'm not happy with it. I am looking for a external hard drive that is easy to use for someone not that great with computers and I can back up my computer with it, that has the ability to be encrypted, is reliable, is ideally available locally at a place like best buy, must have a metal case, not a plastic one (the one I have now heats up and smells like burning plastic) Also bonus points if it has a fan in it. I have a PC not a mac, so it should be for a PC. Also I am not sure if I want to but one of those large external hard drives you leave attached or the smaller pocket sized one so any pro's and con's of both would be great.

I'm currently filling out a profile on elance.com for web development jobs and am being asked to indicate which skills I possess. Some of the choices include MacOSX and Windows. I've also seen people list these on resumes(used to work in HR) in the same section where they list proficiency in MS Word, or even in a separate section for operating systems, for pretty much every kind of job, not just tech-related. I'm reformatting the hard drive of my parent's Windows 7 PC to give to somebody. That's all well and good--software is reinstalled, drivers are updated, Windows Update looks happy. When I started the machine for the first time after Windows 7 installation was complete, it did it's standard thing where it asked what the user name was, what the PC name was, basic settings, etc. Is there any way to redo that setup for the new owner when they turn it on for the first time? I would like to display Karaoke lyrics over a live webcam feed. This means I might need a skype (or equivalent) plugin that plays the music & lyrics, or find some karaoke software with the ability to display lyrics over a transparent background. (That is, to have windowless karaoke display, and run the webcam feed behind it. ) All the software (I can find) to play .CDG (karaoke lyric standard) files forces them to be played with an image background, or over a video file.
