Dear AskAutomation&BatchFilter, I have 250 png files in a folder (named like this: cat_80.png, dog_80.png, bird_80.png, etc.). I want to put each png in a folder (1 png per folder, and the folders don't exist yet) that is named based on the png (cat_80.png goes in a folder named cat, dog_80.png goes in a folder named dog). Does anyone know of a free tool (WinXP) or method of doing this? I'd prefer a WYSIWIG or menu-based tool, rather than a pointer to a scripting language, unless it's really easy and idiotproof...

Just say for instance - I had an MP3 (or some MP3's) and I wanted to create my own video, maybe with bits of video footage from a variety of sources, and some 'slides' or 'captions' - and then burn that whole thing to a DVD that I could play in a nightclub. What would be good software (Win XP) that could facilitate this for me?

Laptop Clean XP Install:
1] My (on board?) sound card is unrecognised. How do I find out what drivers to use?

2] What programs do you really think I need? I already have VNC, VLC, Firefox, Thunderbird and AVG installed. What else should I add? (Freeware/OS appriciated but not needed.) [more inside]

Stupid annoying WinXP question. I installed an older program I use for data analysis in my lab. Every time I click the start menu it shows up as a newly installed program, despite the fact that I've used it quite a bit. I want it to go away and show up as an old program, not highlighted like a new one. The only help I can find using my formidable Google-Fu is "Turn off new program notification". Well, I don't want to do that; I like to know if something new has been added to my machine. Anyone know how XP marks programs as newly installed, or highlighted, and how to turn this off on an individual entry basis rather than across the board?

The new DVD burner (an NEC ND-2510A), didn't come with any burning software. I know I can get the express version of Nero 6 for a couple bucks, but does anybody know of a good small DVD burning program (preferably freeware) for Windows XP that would be downloadable on dialup? Sourceforge and Tucows, my usual trusted sites, are turning up bupkiss.

I have a WinXp machine with three hard drives, each one holding 100GB. I'm researching backup alternatives, and there are tons these days (tape drives, external firewire drives, jazz drives, etc.). I'd like to find a solution that strikes a nice balance between ease of use, cost and durability. Any suggestions?
