Has anyone attended weddings where there has been an 'open toast' in addition to (or instead of) a regular speech/toast? If so, could you tell me what you thought of it, whether you would recommend that format, and how it was initiated? [more inside]

I am to be the best man at a wedding of a German and Italian (the bride). I have been asked by the couple to speak in English on the day. Most people attending should be able to understand some English but unfortunately there will still be a number who will not understand. Any clever ideas on how to bridge the language barrier? German humour and Italian humour - what are they? Are they compatible? How could I work them together? As I am British, I don't know the different customs and practices at Italian weddings and German weddings. What are the things I should really make a point of doing and not doing? Are there some finer touches that would really go down well? [more inside]

Getting married at the end of April, and thoughts turn to the speech. Bought all of the usual speech books and etiquette guides, so have gathered who I need to thank and the like. What I'm looking for is that touch that will get the whole room going, be it a quote, a bit of poetry or something else. Not looking for jokes / one-liners in particular as think they come off corny. Help appreciated

I'm officiating my little sister's wedding ceremony this Friday, and I'm looking for a great reading. She's young and somewhat cynical, so something modern-sounding and non-mushy would be great. Any suggestions?

One of my best friends is getting married, and I am thrilled to be the best man. I have to write a speech. Now, that's tricky enough in and of itself, but there's an additional wrinkle: My friend is having a pretty traditional wedding in Mexico. My Spanish is somewhat broken, but I have friends and family who can help me translate whatever I write. My question is: what is appropriate in such a speech in Mexico? How long should it be? What can I expect? More inside... [more inside]

What's the best joke/ one-liner you've heard in a speech at a wedding? I'm getting married this year and it's getting to be speech-writing time; the books and websites I've found on this so far have all been quite corny. Does anyone have any gems out there?
