A domain that I once owned expired, years ago. When it did, I deleted the folder, and all the files within it, on my hosting plan that said domain pointed to. Someone else has bought the site, and instead of a new site, my old site is on it! [more inside]
I'm putting together a genealogy website. Half of it is about my personal family history so my own relatives can look at it. The other half is about genealogy research itself, things of interest to other genealogists in general. I'd like a cool, fairly unique name for this website. Maybe a phrase? Any clever suggestions? Thanks!
I want to start a service that will put real letters into the mail via a website. I kind of prefer a meaningless name that is simple, unambiguous to spell, and memorable that would grow with the site, if it began to branch out into different areas. And of course, the domain should be open. Any ideas? [more inside]
I'd like to get back into managing a silly little bit of webspace for myself and my whims. I paid for a year of hosting and two domains through Dreamhost, but no real idea of how to go forward, and I don't have significant blocks of free time to really get involved all at once. [more inside]

I'm an independent graphic artist looking to create a simple but not amatuerish-looking portfolio website to showcase my work. And because of my limited budget, I pretty much have to do it myself. Why does a WHOIS/LOOKUP search show that my website domain is registered to (1) my name at (2) not my address under either (3) namejuice.com or droa.com and say that my website is "locked"? My web designer can make changes to the site. Does this mean that I am going to have to pay some sort of extortionary premium to get my site back when it expires next year? P.S. -- It's pretty easy to find plenty of complaints about droa.com's "slamming" of domain names via Google. I assume that the term "slamming" is either what I am talking about or related to it.
Thanks to your earlier help, I have successfully ported my C# project over to the Mac. I have also ordered a new DSL line with a static IP from bway.net. What do I need to know in order to host my website, accessible via my TLD, on a PowerPC Mac mini running OS X 10.4? How can I be my own DNS and mail server? Without overshadowing that question, would it be smarter to think in terms of DynDNS for external DNS/mail services?

Domain mapping to a TypePad blog. For the past 10 days, I have desperately been trying to map a domain name to my TypePad blog. Every solution offered to me by either TypePad or my registrar seems to undo something else. Is there such a thing as a Web site where you can type in the name of a particular organization or domain, and find out what e-mail scheme they assign their employees? Let's say you're trying to locate John Smith at the fictitious Omni Product Corporation...then you could look up the company and find out whether they typically give out addresses that are "email@example.com," "johnsmith@...," "js,"...etc.? I realize this sounds like a spam apocalypse, but it would be so useful.
