Has basic web hosting become a commodity? I have found so many companies offering essentially the same features for around the same price. Is it necessary these days for the non-power user really spend time and energy choosing the best deal or the best "rated" company?

We're sending out about 55,000 postcards to members of our organization. Those postcards direct them to visit a brand-new website for information on a new program. Assuming that all 55,000 members have at least some interest in the new program (which they likely do, or they wouldn't pay for the membership in the first place) what kind of website traffic should we be prepared to handle during that first week? What specific hosting package (vendor and package name) would you suggest we buy to best absorb the traffic for this project.

What's a good
free, semi-anonymous Web hosting service that isn't quick to take down content? I want to post some satirical artwork I created, but not get canned because of some overreactive corporate legal department. I've heard Dutch sites are good for this. Any thoughts? And does Google do a good job indexing free servers?

I am in a shared hosting environment, but I host multiple domains using mod_rewrite. Of course, this means all the domains get lumped together in one logfile. I need to be able to separate the individual domains for log analysis, without using a CustomLog statement.

A family member of mine wants to set up a simple site for his home business - schedules of classes, some photographs, contact information, links, etc., and I have suggested that he use Typepad, which I use for a number of projects. However I think he'd prefer a non-weblog format, which leads me to my question: are there combined hosting/construction tools out there, like some of these weblog services, that have a good and very easy-to-use back-end, lots of design/format choices, but are more focused around a more heirarchically structured, top-down site structure?

US and Canadian Residents Only. This, of course, completely pissed me off. Does anyone know of any packages
comparable to their Linux Business Hosting that are available to poor Aussies like me?
