In April I'll be attending a weeklong conference in Alexandria, VA and will likely be traveling alone. I've never been to DC. What can I do (safely and cheaply) by myself?

What off-the-beaten-path activities can I do in D.C.? I would love to do something that makes me feel a bit like a VIP. I want the city to seem like it does in a spy novel.
Seeing the
vintage Congressional bathrooms, getting a behind the scenes tour of the Library of Congress, and unusual sights like the Pentagon's gold AK-47 are the kind of things I'm after.

How long would the drive from New Haven to Washington, D.C., take on Wednesday evening? I'm trying to decide how horrendous the experience will be so I can judge whether springing for Amtrack tickets would be worth it. We'll be leaving at about 6 from New Haven. Specific experiences with that drive or a similar one before Thanksgiving would be appreciated.

Mum and I are going on a road trip in a week. We're starting from the Seattle area and the farthest point is Mansfield, MO. There we will see the last "Little House" of Laura Ingalls Wilder. We'll also be visiting DeSmet, SD to see the "Little Town on the Prairie". We're also going to see Mt. Rushmore which is also in South Dakota. Other than that, we have no definite plans. What is there to see and/or do between those two points? Any hotel/motel/B&B recommendations?

My husband and I will be returning to DC, where we spent part of our honeymoon, for a 10th anniversary trip during the first week in May (May 1-May 7). I've seen
these questions, which cover a lot, but we're also interested in events the locals might know about that we wouldn't hear about coming in from out out town. For location/travel purposes, we'll be staying at a hotel near the Foggy Bottom Metro stop and will not have a car. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Growing up in Washington state in the 70’s and 80’s I watched a PBS show about a grandma that visited sites of interest (Columbia Gorge, White Bird Pass, etc.) in the Northwest with her grandchildren. Production quality, as I remember it, was rather crude. Does anyone else remember this show? What was the name? Thanks!

In late May, I'll be driving with a bunch of friends in an RV from
Sacramento CA to George WA and back for the Sasquatch Music Festival. I've only driven as far north as the Oregon border before, so I'm looking for recommendations of interesting places to stop - your favorite diners, pie shops, waterfalls, hot springs (improved or not) and other oddities of northwest highway culture. I'm familar with many Northern California hot springs (I really like the one in
Sierraville), and would love to find other very inexpensive and informal places like that.
