We're celebrating our 20th anniversary this summer (yay!) and we're trying to find a place to stay for a week in the western/northwestern US to celebrate this milestone. The catch is that this destination needs to be some place new to us. A few other particular requirements below the fold.

I'm road tripping thru the Pacific Northwest. I'll be vetting bookstores for my upcoming book tour in Boise ID, Bend OR, Eugene/Corvallis OR, Portland OR, Seattle WA, Spokane WA, and Missoula MT — and any towns in between that warrant it. :-) I'm hoping y'all might have bookstores to recommend!
Aside from Auntie's in Spokane and Powell's in Portland, I'm relying on Yelp — but I'd much prefer your
personal recommendations for bookstores that host
author events, have a great
vibe, and friendly
staff.

My 40th birthday present to myself is to run away for several days by myself to indulge in restful solitude, nature walks, spa treatments and room service. I live in Oregon and am considering the coast, but could also be talked into Washington/California, or places other than the beach. Price is no object, but would prefer it to be within driving distance of Portland. Requirements and preferences within...

West Coast Road Trip! Mr. desjardins and I are flying into Seattle in early September, renting a car and driving to San Francisco. What do we do in between? We want places to stay and things to do. Amazing scenery is a priority.

I'm looking for a great retreat to do in late March/early April in Northern CA, Oregon or Washington state. I'm going to be in Portland, OR at the end of March and then in San Francisco and LA mid-April. I'm thinking that instead of returning to Vermont in the meantime I could stay on the West coast and find something fun to do (really? ya think?).

In late March, I'm going to drive from Seattle to Los Angeles via 101 and 1 (hugging the coast as closely as I can while staying on highways). Are there any spots along that route which have the potential for bad weather?

How can I set up an automatic email notification thing for news-of-the-weird type stuff as it happens in Oregon and Washington (not DC)? Google alerts doesn't seem this customizable. CNN news alerts do, maybe. Any other options?

My family is considering moving to Oregon (or conceivably Washington) in a couple of years, and we are going to visit soon. I'd like to collect suggestions of possible locations so we can try to visit. We would like a cheap, small town with a liberal climate along the Washington/Oregon border or moderately near the coast. Is this possible?

Four days, mid-July, mid-week, in the Columbia River Gorge. We want to take day-hikes in different locales but stay somewhere centrally located. Hood River, I assume? Or someplace on the Washington side? Hit me up, hivemind.

Growing up in Washington state in the 70’s and 80’s I watched a PBS show about a grandma that visited sites of interest (Columbia Gorge, White Bird Pass, etc.) in the Northwest with her grandchildren. Production quality, as I remember it, was rather crude. Does anyone else remember this show? What was the name? Thanks!

In late May, I'll be driving with a bunch of friends in an RV from
Sacramento CA to George WA and back for the Sasquatch Music Festival. I've only driven as far north as the Oregon border before, so I'm looking for recommendations of interesting places to stop - your favorite diners, pie shops, waterfalls, hot springs (improved or not) and other oddities of northwest highway culture. I'm familar with many Northern California hot springs (I really like the one in
Sierraville), and would love to find other very inexpensive and informal places like that.

I'm thinking about buying a new car in the next year. I live in Seattle, Washington, where the sales tax is about 8.8%, but I visit Oregon frequently, where there is no sales tax. Would there be any drawbacks to buying the car in Oregon to avoid the sales tax? I would still register and insure it in Washington.
