Leaving for the Deep Creek Dunk in a few hours, and I'm looking for mixed drink recommendations to get through standing outside in the cold for 6 hours... special requirements: mixes with Grey Goose (I'm not a huge fan of it, but it was a free bottle, so mixing can overpower the vodka)... is not carbonated thusly cannot go "flat" when sitting for a few hours nor can it get "shaken up" while sloshing around inside a Camelbak for a while... tastes good cold, but doesn't taste bad when it warms up a bit... and is something I can drink through a straw all afternoon.
Last year, I mixed a Bay Breeze (Vodka, Cranberry juice & Pineapple juice), so I was looking for something different. Thanks.

I've often heard the claim that vodka is required by law to be "tasteless, odorless, and colorless". Even Alton Brown, who I usually trust on these matters, makes the claim.
This claim is often taken to mean that it doesn't matter what brand of vodka you buy - it's all exactly the same (Alton says this as well). How can this possibly be true? Anyone who's ever opened a bottle of vodka knows it has an obvious smell, with words like "paint thinner" describing it. Others will tell you that this just means you're buying cheap vodka, but according to the supposed law, it's all the same! Please help me get set straight. Is there a law or not? [more inside]

I'm holding a '007 Days of James Bond' charity fund-raiser marathon, starting this coming Sunday - all of official movies from 'Dr. No' to 'Quantum of Solace' plus a few more.
So I'm looking for food/drink ideas we can put together - either 'sensible' stuff connected with the movie (sushi during 'You Only Live Twice'), silly generic ideas (' Prawn Connery') or anything you can suggest...
Many thanks in advance!

I preserved a lot of cumquats in liquor. The liquor is nice, but the cumquats themselves too are sour and bitter to eat. Is there a recipe I could use them in? I'm thinking something like a fruitcake, but I don't know how to incorporate them.

There is only one cocktail that I really, really like. I discovered it by chance at my favorite restaurant, since sadly closed down. I can get people to make it for me but it seems like I always have to explain the recipe three times and I feel there must be a name for it. Unfortunately, I have drawn a blank when visiting cocktail websites. Please help me ID this drink! [more inside]

I am making homemade vanilla extract for christmas presents. I was planning to use smirnoff, but money is tighter than I anticipated this month. If I use bottom shelf vodka, will it be terrible? What is the least crappy brand of bottom shelf vodka? I don't have a brita filter to purify the vodka unfortunately, but if there is another cheap way to make it better I could do that. Thanks!

Friends sent me two in-flight-sized bottles of alcohol: a bottle of "mint gin" and a bottle of vodka. They are of unknown age (probably at least the early 1970s, possibly even older) and most likely American provenance. They appear to be unopened. Can I die/suffer permanent injury from drinking them?

I'm curious what it would take to make and sell a bottle of booze commercially. A new tequila or vodka for instance. What would it take to have my own bottle for sale in Albertson's (etc...) nationwide. I know Sammy Hagar wanted his own tequila and now has it, and I know some guy started Skyy vodka. Now, Sammy is clearly a $$$$$-onaire, and for all I know, so was the Skyy guy before he started. Does it take a million bucks? Or can I start small for $10,000? What kind of barriers to entry are there? Legality issues? Initial production? Production scalability? Any info would be appreciated.

Any vodka connoisseurs or haters around? My usual partner in booze snobbery hoboynow
and I have a bit of a debate. I'm interested in pursuing vodka as my drink for the next few months but he isn't. To his taste, "tequila and whisky varietals (along with any of the more complex-tasting beverages) are more worth investigation than vodka." What are your thoughts? Also, what vodkas have you found to be the best purchase?

I know that there are no carbs in hard liquor (gin, vodka, etc), but why? I've been told that the carbs are burnt off in the distilling process, but I'd like to know exactly how that occurs. Weblinks are helpful.

Smirnoff is running an ad campaign right now - Zero carbs. How can this be? Seeing how alcohol is converted from sugar, my guess is it has to interact with the body in a way similar (or equal) to carbohydrates. Can anyone shed light on this for me? [more inside]
