Can anyone recommend an open-source-protocol-based just-for-home-use VOIP provider & software? I'm pretty sure I don't want Skype, pretty sure I don't want Yahoo Messenger - security issues, not knowing what's really going on with these packages once they're installed, plus the license/privacy/etc. agreements are long and pretty bad. I recently purchased an iMac and got a free iPod touch as part of the educational promotion. I don't have an iPhone, and am fairly locked into my current (non-ATT) contract, so I won't be getting an iPhone anytime soon. I've tried to figure out what the new software upgrade, 2.1, will do for me, but just from looking at the Apple site, it's difficult to figure out what I can do with the touch as it stands, and what I would gain by upgrading. I'm looking for a software PC-to-PC VoIP program that will handle an extremely low bandwidth connection with high UDP packet loss. This is to reach a person at the far end of a highly contended (8:1 or greater) TDMA VSAT connection. Total bandwidth available to the client PC at the far end of the satellite link is about 64 kbps. Skype does not work properly due to >45% UDP packet loss and high latency jitter. [more inside]

Important Skype Issue! I primarily use Skype for voicemails, however I am getting lots of complaints that Skype's line is busy. Every time I open Skype the preferences are set to only allow calls from people in my contact list. I keep setting them to allow calls from anyone and they keep going back to only accepting calls from people in my contacts list.

Are there any less expensive alternatives than Clear Sight that would allow one to capture and analyze VOIP calls in near real time? We're looking for something in the $25k range. Rolling our own with open source software is a viable alternative, and I'd like recommendations in that area, as well as commercial software. We do a fairly large volume of voip calls (hundreds per second), so we need something fairly robust, but we aren't verizon or anything, so don't necessarily need really heavy iron.
TCPdump & wireshark is NOT a workable alternative, though :)

I'm thinking of switching phone services, as I often do. It's such a hassle to keep porting phone numbers (LNP), or, actually switching phone numbers.
My particular situation is that I have two phone numbers of Vonage, and one on my iPhone - I want to keep the iPhone but dump Vonage while keeping the numbers - I want to try Skype, but they don't let you port phone numbers in. What's a cheap way to keep these phone numbers? More specifically, I'm curious about the following:

I work in a small UK based office with 4 people and I’m looking for a phone solution that will allow us to transfer calls between each other and receive more than 1 call at the same time. Our current setup is just 1 standard phone and 1 standard BT line.
I realise I will need to invest in some new software / handsets and maybe a VoIP service. I don’t want to spend more than £300 on 2 handsets and the service and I’m hoping someone can recommend a service and what hardware I will need to buy.
Our requirements are:
Need to use our existing BT phone number (or have it redirect somewhere without the caller knowing or incurring us cost to us)
Ability to make and receive calls via a handset
Ability to transfer calls between the 4 handsets
Ability to redirect calls on busy or out of office to another number
Help appreciated
