I want to start a few seconds video recording prompted by a gun blast. Plan is to attach a USB camera to a spotting scope and have my Mac start recording a few seconds of video the moment a shot is fired. The start and stop of the Video recording can be done with Automator ad/or Apple script. I am looking for an app or hardware solution to prompt the recording. It could be an application that starts a script once a sound exceeds a certain level. Perhaps even better a motion sensor that will sense the shock in the rifle stock. Thanks for your help. Rogier
I want to make a series of instructional programming videos. I'm reasonably happy that I have all the moving parts lined up - I know what I want to cover, I have the examples and material ready, I've figured out how to make high-quality video recordings of my desktop and I've got a nice USB microphone. But if there's one thing that my brief forays into video editing have taught me, it's that it can be incredibly time-consuming. Given that I plan on making ~10 hours of content for my first batch of videos, I'd like some advice on doing this efficiently. Specific questions inside. [more inside]
I'm looking for the most bare-bones video cameras that money can buy. I've been searching among security cameras, but what are some other possible searches? Imagine a security camera without the LED lights. As in, I would prefer an analog as opposed to USB output, but cost is more important than anything. The current cheapest security cameras I can find are $28 or so. Do any exist that are perhaps less than $20? [more inside]

I remember seeing a reference somewhere on mefi float by that I can't find anymore. There was a young girl (8-13?) who had hand-written a design for a video game and someone interviewed her about it, possibly her father. She went into great detail in an audio-only recording about this Portal-like game she made, and somewhere there was a link to the audio and the hand drawn pictures of several horizontally laid out levels. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

We want to record students giving presentations and give them a copy of the video afterwards for later review. The camera would be fixed in some way to the room (either to the ceiling or one of the walls) and connected to a computer where the recording would be done. What kind of camera would work? Can this be done on the cheap (as in not in the thousands of dollars)? If not, what alternatives exist? [more inside]

Looking to record classical guitar music near me for a reasonable price - I am thinking of posting something up at the music school at the nearby university, and maybe a guitar shop or two in town if I can do that, and making some recordings with willing musicians. Does this device exist, and if not, how can I modify cheap consumer digicams to create it: A cheap portable digicam that will endlessly record video to some kind of small memory buffer, say enough memory for 1 minute of video, such that I could leave it running for days on the off-chance of it recording something interesting, and when something interesting happened, I just press a "Stop Recording" button, and the last 60 seconds of video are sitting in memory.
