Our family will be spending a few days in Venice in July. We're traveling with kids, so our plan is for a mostly low-key trip filled with lazily exploring the city. But we're also looking for other unique or special experiences we could do as a family that would really make our trip special. [more inside]
What are your non-traditional things in Rome, Florence, and Venice that made your trip really remarkable? [more inside]
I've gotten great travel help on the Green before, so hoping someone here has been to Venice recently and wants to give recommendations. Specific requests inside! [more inside]
My family has decided to spend the holidays in Italy and at the Vatican. I'm doing all the planning and booking and I need some advice both in general, and specific to the holidays/closures etc. We will spend about 2 weeks and plan to see Rome/the Vatican, Florence and Venice. [more inside]

We found a place to stay while visiting Venice but the owner has not requested we complete a rental contract or pay a deposit. Do we need to worry? [more inside]
So what are some good beer makers for me to look out for in Italy, and what particular bars or restaurants have good beer selections in Rome and Venice? My preferred styles are IPA, Belgian ales, stout; but anything that has some depth of flavor is good, especially if it is rooted in local/regional brewing traditions. Just not flavorless lager! My girlfriend and I are going to Italy in three weeks. We both love Rome, but neither of us has been in a while. I am a "foodie" (sigh) and am fluent in Italian, if rusty. Some things we're seeing: Palazzo Altemps, S. Luigi dei Francesi for the Caravaggios, Villa Borghese, MAXXI, the Quirinale. Is there anything new, or newly open, that we should be aware of? Any musical happenings in early May we shouldn't miss? [more inside]
I am trying to figure out the meaning of the rebus on this page of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. It's a strange work, but beautifully done: the printer of the book is Aldus Manutius, who died 500 years ago this year. Can you help me figure out the rebus and/or translate the "Latin"?
Going to Italy this weekend on short notice for a surprise romantic getaway. In last-minute planning mode, need the wisdom of the traveled Hive Mind - where should we go? [more inside]
Painting which I saw in a Venice art gallery (I think) showing God holding balance with people on each pan. A small demon (imp) is shown pushing up one of the scale pans with a small trident, while sneakily peeping to see if God can see him. I'd love to know the name of the painting and the artist.
Where and what shops should I look at for purses in Venice/Milan? [more inside]
Restaurant for six in Venice? The birthday girl wants seafood, one of us is a veggie, and and ideal price range would be about €35 per person including a decent amount of wine. [more inside]
Is the Sunday edition of The New York Times available for purchase in Paris, Rome, Venice or Florence. If so, where can it be purchased?
I can't believe I waited this long to ask the MeFi hive-mind, but here we are. In 24 hours my wife and I will be leaving on our honeymoon to the above-mentioned destinations. What I'm looking for are some cool, unusual, secret, or just plain "local favorite" things to do and places to go. Rather than simply pointing me to other sites offering collected reviews of places (tripadvisor, et al) I'm hoping to get some first-hand recommendations from you all. Time will be rather short in each city (3-4 days each) so let's try to stay within the cities themselves, as we won't really have time for outlying excursions. To give you an idea of what we're after, my wife and I are both lifetime members of the gothic subculture, and she in particular is very interested in fashion. Eccentric bars/pubs are also favorites. We leave on May 4th, but feel free to contribute later in the week, as I'll be eagerly checking this thread for your suggestions. Cheers, MeFi!
I'm allergic to molluscs: scallops, mussels, clams, squid, oysters, whelks, etc. I'll be spending some time in Venice and the Cinque Terre area soon. Is there anything I should look out for to avoid accidentally eating molluscs? [more inside]
So I'm joining a Call of Cthulhu game, and my character, assigned by the GM, is that of a young lady (age 20), who is from one of the wealthy families of Venice, in the 1920's. She is educated and capable but nothing was expected of her except to marry well and produce children. But the sudden death of her father has thrown her life into turmoil. Are there any good books or movies I can watch that feature this type of woman in this time and place? [more inside]
My friend will be visiting Rome and Venice on her honeymoon in a few months. She loves the Italian card game Bang! and has joked that she expects to play it in Italy. Is there a way for me to actually make this happen for her? [more inside]
We're planning a trip to Venice. I am fascinated by the fact that they built an entire city in a lagoon and am somewhat flabbergasted that I haven't been able to find a single place in the city where I can see a model or an exhibit that explains the construction. Is there really no place where I can learn more about Venetian engineering?
Mrs. Arbac and I are going to be taking a cruise from Barcelona to Venice at the end of August. We're getting to Barcelona a few days early and staying an extra day in Venice. Where should we stay and what should we see? Budget and likes/dislikes inside. [more inside]

Hubs and I are contemplating a trip to Venice in October--acqua alta season. What kind of gear would we want to manage the high waters? Like: Would we want to bring full-on rubber boots, or will we be able to get by with regular waterproof shoes? [more inside]

Book search: looking to find the title/author of a mystery set in Venice. Likely NOT Donna Leon, the mystery features a married British couple in Venice on vacation. Plot elements may include a suitcase of books, a murder that takes place at a film festival or fashion show. The couple become involved in solving the case. Published in the last decade, perhaps. Thanks!

I'm going to be in Venice for the next week and a half! Please give me some recommendations for food and sightseeing. Thanks!
Hi all. I am looking for recommendations for food in Venice (anything from a Paninoteca to a Ristorante). I've read that it is difficult to find good food in Venice, so I'm hoping the Metafilter hive mind can help me out. In addition, any recommendations for sightseeing would be great. Especially non-traditional/off the beaten path stuff. Thanks again.
I was in Venice for a few days at the end of March, and several times saw young people in the street participating in a weird ritual: they would read out a passage from a hand-made poster, the crowd would laugh, and someone would attack them with a foodstuff -- I saw a lot of flour, once a meat tray, and an unfortunate soul having canned whipped cream injected down his pants. What? [more inside]
Last week, Open Culture posted a link to a breathtaking little video of Venice posted on Vimeo. The only thing Vimeo reveals about its video artist is the name Icam from France and that they have 38 other videos posted. I would really like to know more about this elusive figure who captured the colorful, yet melancholy, beauty of Venice so perfectly! Anybody know anything further about the video artist Icam?
Walking in Venice/Santa Monica... so I'm in CA for another week. I'm a big walker... where should I walk? What are the great shops for music, books, film, sights, eats, drinks? Any great concerts, readings, plays I shouldn't miss? Or if there's something a single bus ride will get me to that you can recommend, please do so with specific boarding instructions. Thanks!
