Planning a quick solo-getaway to Vancouver. What should I be sure not to miss? [more inside]
Thanks to overzealous use of Google Flights, I'm going to Vancouver next week. Which is great, but I'll be there over Thanksgiving. Will there be anything to do or anything open over the holiday? I especially need ideas that are inside in case of bad weather. (My current plans are 1. go to Vancouver Island overnight 2. eat ALL the sushi 3. whale watch 4.walk/bike around aimlessly)
I will be attending a conference in Vancouver the week of December 5th. My wife and I usually like to turn these trips into vacation opportunities, so I would like to get the advice of you fine folks! First of all, the conference is at the Sheraton Wall Centre on Burrard St. Apparently, there will be reduced rates at the hotel for conference attendees, but I would be happy to hear any suggestions for less expensive lodging in that area. It's always a good thing to save the company a few bucks! [more inside]
Our son in Victoria, BC, is finally ready to talk to a psychiatrist instead of pursuing "alternative" approaches to his mental health. Does anybody know someone in the area who is good with depression, anger and possible bipolar issues?
Can anyone in Vancouver, B.C, recommend a psychologist who specializes in postpartum anxiety/depression? [more inside]
I'm hoping to organize a party with about 40 people in the next few weeks in Vancouver, BC. Ideally, it would be in a place that would have a low spend-limit, or free. Not picky about location. It would be more drinks than dinner, although I could order some apps for sharing. Does anyone have any leads or previous experience with this? I'm doing this a bit last minute and not super hopeful, but if the geniuses of AskMe can help, I would be ever indebted!
I'm looking for a good, inexpensive sushi buffet in Vancouver that is easily accessible via skytrain or bus. We'd also like some place that doesn't serve sharkfin soup. [more inside]
What is the most convenient way to get from Vancouver International Airport to downton Seattle with an 8 year old in tow and plenty of luggage? Visiting Seattle this summer but flying into Vancouver because flights are much cheaper. Now, how do I get from the aiport to downton Seattle with minimum hassle, and yet economically? What are my options?
I want to make the switch over to eating mostly organic meat, vegetables, and dairy without breaking the bank. Whole Foods is obviously not the best option here...are there any lesser known, small markets that offer good prices on organic food in Vancouver, BC?
We’re home-owners in Vancouver, BC. We love our house, but it’s needs some minor work on the exterior. Some of the wood trim needs repair, and the trim, fencing, and deck need painting. The majority of the work is the painting, and we are unsure of the best way to get this done. We are not handy, and so need to hire someone. [more inside]
Where should I live in Vancouver? And how do I find an apartment? [more inside]
I got some great suggestions about visiting British Columbia last year, but we didn't make it that far because we already had so many stops. This year we want to visit Crater Lake, Portland, B. C., and Seattle (in that order, due to the timing of an event in Seattle and having to rush back home for the fall semester). And I have some more specific questions about the whole Canada thing. [more inside]
My SO is teaching a summer course at UBC this August. I'm tagging along with our two kids, 7 and 10. Help me make this an amazing month for all of us. [more inside]
Heading to Victoria and Vancouver next week - what unique stores may we be interested in checking out? [more inside]
I'll be in Vancouver for a couple of days later in April. Where is a good place where I can get free WiFi so I can work? I'm staying at Pender and Richards.
I'm looking for an affordable, vegetarian-friendly, delicious restaurant in Vancouver, BC. Hoping for entrees below $20, and a downtown location would be a bonus. Thanks!
I want to take a two-week (or thereabouts) trip to the Pacific Northwest for an upcoming milestone birthday. On the itinerary so far are Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco. I've been to Seattle and San Francisco but never Vancouver or Portland. Help me plan! [more inside]
I'm working on a show right now that is shooting at night outside of Vancouver. Production has provided knock-off Uggs as warmup boots for performers, but they run small and don't fit my feet. I tried to buy myself some real live Uggs but my high arches mean I can't even get my foot in. [more inside]
My spouse and I have come to a point where we either have to resolve some long standing issues or break up. I'm looking for recommendations for couples therapists in Vancouver to help us work these issues out. [more inside]
I'm going up to Vancouver for the weekend soon and find myself with a bit of a clothing budget and a favorable exchange rate. I don't shop at the same stores as my woman friend up there due to differences in taste and size range, and my other woman friend there is off at a meditation retreat so I can't ask her. Given the preferences below the fold, where should I shop for clothes and shoes? [more inside]
Seeking recommendations for a dentist in Vancouver, BC! [more inside]
I need someone to do my laundry for me. I do not have a washing machine and am not well enough to go to the laundromat regularly. Please recommend a laundry service or better strategies for finding one. [more inside]
I started a MFA writing program in Vancouver this fall. I wasn't sure about whether I should go or not to begin with, and now, I'm still second-guess and worrying I made a big mistake. I'm unhappy, often, and I'm worried that if I stay it will be for the wrong reasons: a big, heavy sunken cost fallacy. Can you help, please? Long complicated backstory inside. [more inside]
I have a free afternoon in Vancouver and would like to do a little shopping. I'd like to find one area I can go to for some shopping. What I'm looking for: stuff for kids, women's clothes and (maybe) food stuff I can take back to the US. Ideally stuff that is a little different then what I'd find in the US, and not ridiculously expensive. What neighborhood or street should I go to? Any specific store recommendations?
For general life preparedness and education, I'd like to take a course for First Aid, First Responder (FR), or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), but I'm finding it hard to decide. I'm leaning towards FR or EMR because I think this field is interesting and want to learn more, and because I have time to invest in it. However, FR and EMR have additional requirements which sound potentially onerous for someone who doesn't actively practice in the field. I'm in Vancouver, BC. [more inside]
Who was the anthropologist who suggested that multinational corporations are the highest life forms on Earth? Author William Gibson has recounted going to a lecture by a female anthropologist at the University of British Columbia in the late 70s. The anthropologist posited the idea that multinational corporations were the highest life form on Earth, which had a profound influence on Gibson's world view, and therefore on literature influenced by Gibson. Who was this anthropologist? I haven't been able to find out who she was.
Just found out our client has approved a film shoot in Vancouver. Hooray! Now, where do a crew of 5 Brooklynites stay? [more inside]
I'm going to be in Vancouver for about 7-8 months, and I'm hoping to get recommendations for a short stay for the first month. I've checked out airbnb as well as some serviced apartments for the first few weeks but would love to hear any recommendations as those I've found are pretty pricey! [more inside]
Why do I keep getting attacked by crows? Can I do anything to stop it? [more inside]
I need some suggestions for psychologists in Vancouver BC, preferably someone who is in the downtown area. I have no idea where to start with choosing someone and would rather not just pick someone randomly from Google. [more inside]
Every time I visit Vancouver and drive down Granville St between Granville Island and the airport, I notice there are entire blocks full of single family homes for sale. As in, every house on the block is for sale, often by the same realtor, at the same time. Why is this? [more inside]
I bought a unit in a high-rise condo in Metro Vancouver that will be finished two years from now. How can I get answers to some admittedly obscure questions? The marketing materials are shallow (I can only read the word 'luxury' so many times), and the broker who signed my paperwork at the showroom has been unhelpful. I'm a first-time buyer. [more inside]
I've received conflicting (informal) advice about my eligibility for one of the BC Provincial Nominee Program categories, and I'd like to discuss my situation with an immigration professional. But I could use some help choosing who to talk to: First, choosing if I want an immigration lawyer or consultant, and second, recommendations for specific lawyers and consultants. [more inside]

We're planning to drive from Kelowna to Vancouver in the middle of September, and we'd like to take a scenic route and perhaps stay overnight somewhere in the middle. Problem: we're getting conflicting advice about which "scenic" route to take! [more inside]
We're off for a late-booked trip to Vancouver in August and need to find a place to stay. Most hotels are booked in the West End/Downtown/Yaletown area. What hotels would you recommend that are moderately ($100-200) priced with easy transit access to tourist attractions? We'd like to use public transit if possible, but can rent a car if public transit is infeasible. We will have at least one member of our party who can't walk longish distances, and a toddler to deal with as well, so frequent bus changes may be a challenge. We were looking at the Holiday Inn Express Burnaby, is this a sane choice?
I'll be in Vancouver and the surrounding area next week. What's the best way for me to get data on my cellphone? Something like a prepaid mobile SIM card tied to a data plan. Just relying on wifi isn't an option as half of the time I won't be in the city. [more inside]
Lower Mainland MeFites: I'm looking for a place to have dinner with my brother tonight somewhere between the Tsawassen ferry terminal and YVR. Neither of us are from the area. What are your favourite Richmond-area eating spots? Difficulty factor: I'm vegan and gf; he is a dedicated carnivore. [more inside]
I'm shocked and appalled by the recent revelations regarding the treatment of cattle on the dairy farm in Chilliwack, BC. This is the final straw for me; I can no longer contribute to the success of factory farms by purchasing their products. Help me find a place where I can buy cream for my coffee that is from happy, humanely-raised cows. [more inside]
I have a visitor coming in a few weeks who has celiac disease and can only eat gluten-free food. What are the best restaurants with gluten-free options? Is there a good place for a fancy meal? [more inside]
I will be in Hammond, Louisiana this October and wanted to make a road trip back to my home in Vancouver Canada. The current plan is to buy a vehicle in Hammond or New Orleans, then drive through Texas and up the coast. I am an artist, so visiting sites like Marfa to see the Chianti Foundation and visiting LA to see the MOCA and the Hammer are priorities. I am asking for advice on art sites and routes with the most interesting or essential things to see. I've visited a few places in the US but this is a big trip for me I may not be able to make again so I'd like to make the most of it. If you are American, assume I know nothing. The obvious for you may not be that obvious to a Canadian. Thanks!
My wife is looking for someone to do a floral tattoo somewhat in the style of this tattoo or this tattoo. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks! [more inside]
the other half and I are planning a road trip from Vancouver to San Francisco in early May and we're looking for some advice on route planning and potential stops (and stopovers.) [more inside]
I'm going to be up in Vancouver this weekend and want to shop for a new spring coat. Something trenchcoat style but not in black or beige - cool colors or prints/patterns would be better. Size 12 or M/L, between $100 and $200. The style constraints are that it should not be teenagery but not dowdy either - I like classic cuts but trendy colors and patterns. I already plan to check out The Bay.
Asking for a distressed friend, Vancouver BC. Call her Laura. She's suffering from a long term chronic nerve pain issue which has recently gotten worse (the past year). She doesn't want a diagnosis from the community. What she needs is advice on how to get a diagnosis from a relevant doctor so that she can qualify for some kind of disability assistance. [more inside]
