Lately I've been considering getting a Roomba or a Neato, but I need to know if it'll try to suck up dog toys. [more inside]
I received a new vacuum cleaner a few weeks ago. When it ran I noticed a slight burning smell so I exchanged it for a different one (same model: Eureka Boss SmartVac 4870 series). I've run this one for perhaps 15 seconds and again, I notice a slight burning smell. Maybe there's some dust on the motor coils that will burn off after some initial use? [more inside]
Is it feasible to take apart, modify, and put back together again a hair dryer so that it works in reverse, that is, become a small vacuum? I assume I would have to make the blower work backwards to become a sucker, and I would have to direct debris into a little sack and away from the blower and power source. If I were going to do it, what would I do? How much work would it be? How ugly would it be, assuming rudimentary skills and a home workshop? If it's impossible-- why?
I have hardwood floors in every room except the kitchen and bathroom, which both have ceramic tile. I have cats who shed and track litter. I have a lot of hair which sheds. I have a hobby which results in a lot of tiny glass splinters. This is all on one floor. What is my best vacuum cleaner which will pick up all the hair and not get tangled up, will pick up the litter and won't get destroyed by small pieces of glass? I'd prefer something smaller rather than larger as I have limited storage and something bagless would be better than not, but I am not sure how the dust vs small glass pieces will balance that out. I am in Canada. [more inside]
I have this vacuum which doesn't currently work. The vacuum has a full block in its hose, too deep to be accessed by popping the hose as described in the owner's manual. Can I partially disassemble this vacuum to clear the hose myself? If so, how?
I just got a vacuum cleaner and I hate it. I plan to return but now I can't take it apart to get it back in the box. Has anyone had a Eureka Airspeed ONE Reach? Any ideas? There must be a way, but I can't figure out how. [more inside]

Please explain to me some things about central vacuum systems and/or steer me towards some good reference materials. I have a cat. My girlfriend is allergic to cats (previously). I'd like to get a Roomba, since we've noticed that regular vacuuming with my HEPA-filter vacuum helps a lot. The theory here is "set robot to vacuum at 9am, come home at 7pm to cleaner apartment (with dust settled, since the roomba ran at 9am, not 7pm). [more inside]

I recently got a really wonderful cat! While my old cheap-o vacuum did just fine before getting the cat, it is now seriously out if its league. I clearly need to replace the vacuum with something more powerful, but the prices of vacuum cleaners scare me (I am a student and so money is tight). Any suggestions on vacuums that will get the job done with pet hair but not totally break the bank?
I have a bunch of vacuum storage bags, but I own a Dyson DC25 upright vacuum cleaner. The attachment nozzle doesn't work for vacuum bags since it has a protrusion for attaching different heads. [more inside]

I've got two huskies, a black lab, one long haired cat, and two short haired cats living in my house. And I'm drowning in fur. The Dirt Devil Vision I bought two years ago has never worked decently. So I need recommendations for an affordable vacuum cleaner that can handle a ton of fur and relatively new carpet that's still shedding a bit. I can borrow my grandma's Dyson once or twice a month for superawesome vacuum times, but I also need something I can use a few times a week just to get the majority of the fur off the carpet. Difficulty: Under $150.
What model of Miele canister vacuum should I get? I've read a number of reviews, but nothing with enough detail to figure out what model would work best for us. We're in a 2-bedroom Manhattan apartment with hardwood floors and area rugs. I've been to Gracious Home to check out their selection and will probably purchase from there this weekend, unless someone else has a vendor to recommend.

Backpack vacuum cleaners - any experience or tips? I'm considering a backpack vacuum cleaner (ProTeam), but I'm unsure how comparable these are to consumer vacuums. It doesn't appear there are any carpet attachments with beaters (that are driven by a motor). Any have any experience with these? Or insights on which kind?
