Hi! Since most of our family is traveling for the holidays, and we haven’t yet taken our honeymoon (we got married in October), we thought we’d take a trip ourselves. But we could use some recommendations for someplace to go. [more inside]
Heading to Tulum without the kids at the end of Jan/Beginning of Feb for 3 nights and am seeking recommendations for accommodations based upon relatively recent stays. Our requirements: Quiet, clean, nice bed, ceiling fans, hot water, good restaurant, on the ocean. We'd like a cabana but also would consider the right hotel. We can spend up to $500/night for the right place but I'd love to find something closer to $300. Ideally, not next to any major new developments, which I understand are starting to take over the area. Thanks in advance for any help!
My girlfriend and I both have some time off between Christmas and New Years Day. We'd like to take a one-day roadtrip somewhere along the southern California coast, get a hotel, hang out on the beach a while, sleep, come home the next afternoon. We're located in Santa Monica, and on a pretty tight budget. Ideas for great little spots/hotels? [more inside]
I'm planning a trip to San Diego in early February. Not sightseeing, just being somewhere else and getting out of the Michigan cold for a while. [more inside]
I left my holiday vacation planning until the last minute and I'm at my wits' end as to where I can take a warm, relaxing vacation at any time between Dec. 21st and Jan. 5th without spending my life's savings. Any ideas or frugality resources? [more inside]
So I have majorly changed the way I have been eating over the past 6 months, and it seems to be working so far. (Yay!) I will be going on an all-inclusive week long vacation in Mexico with a large group of family at the end of January. They love to party and eat, and so do I, but I know that a combination of drinking a lot, eating too many carbs, and staying up late make me super tired, unhappy, and break out. I'm looking for specific strategies to stay on track while I'm at the resort. I intend to enjoy myself, but still not go overboard with the booze, and mostly try to eat well so I don't feel like crap at the end of the week. This is literally the first time in my life I have made significant progress on changing my diet and lifestyle and I don't want to fall back too much. Last time I was at a resort there was lots of food to pick from but most of it was the "standard american diet" with lots of carbs and way too few fresh veggies. What foods can I bring with me and things should I look for on menus to stay close to my healthy diet without making it too difficult to enjoy my all-inclusive vacation? [more inside]
Mrs. W and I are spending the weekend after Christmas in Mount Dora, FL. Recommendations wanted- restaurants (particularly lunch), arty type stuff, bookstores, out of the way gems we might not otherwise know about. Plan our weekend!
I've been thinking recently that it might be fun to spend 4-7 days in a warm part of North America to ring in the New Year with my girlfriend. I'd love to find a place to get away, warm up from the Chicago winter and maybe sit on a beach if I can. [more inside]
I'm planning to travel south from Massachusetts this summer's vacation, Virginia or NC (with elementary aged kids). Looking a home base with beautiful natural scenery, nice little restaurants nearby, and maybe a river to tube down. [more inside]
Help me plan our next vacation. [more inside]
Boyfriend and I are planning a round trip (by rental car) through California and the Southwest and we'd love some input on the first rough draft of the route. We're going for 23 days in September next year and would like to stay in fairly affordable hotels and motels (no camping). [more inside]
Going to Europe. We have 4.5 weeks. Help us narrow down our choices! [more inside]
My wife and I have 10 days off after Christmas and would like to take “a trip of a lifetime.” We got married this past June and never got a chance to go on a honeymoon. This is our chance to go on a fantastic trip but we can’t decide where to go. We are hoping you all can help! Details inside. [more inside]
I'm looking for smart ways to consolidate, organize, and share tourism information for people who visit me and for places that my partner and I might visit. [more inside]
I've been job searching for the past couple of months. Some online listings compel you to apply for them through a recruiter site. I try to avoid doing this, because I've been spammed as a result by sites like Careerbuilder.com who apparently don't vet their partners very well. [more inside]
Please recommend interesting spots within the US or Canada for a 7-10 (or even 15) day nature-centric vacation (for example bike tours, canoe trips or long hikes). [more inside]
In a month, I'll be traveling abroad for the first time, all by my lonesome. Looking for helpful tips for a first-time international traveler. [more inside]
Two wonderful people - a Salvadoran and a Russian, both living in New York - just got married and have invited my girlfriend and me to join them on vacation in El Salvador this December. Carlos is very sweet, very generous, and very excited to show us his country of origin. It all sounds wonderful to me - beach, mountains, pupusas, family, etc. Plus monkeys! My girlfriend is also very fond of the couple and loves the idea of a tropical vacation, but is typically more cautious than I am and is concerned about safety. This seems to be a valid concern, given the overall crime rate, State Department travel warnings, and so on. El Salvador has a murder rate of 69 per 100,000 people, which is about the same as Flint, Michigan and twice that of Baltimore. I'm a fairly experienced traveler and am inclined to think we'd be safe as long as we stuck with Carlos and his family, but don't want to be foolish. Neither of us speaks Spanish terribly well and we could probably be identified as foreigners by our appearance. The same can be said for Carlos' wife. G/f and I decided to turn to the fine folks of MetaFilter for outside perspectives - thoughts, anecdotes, information, or advice - on the safety and advisability of traveling to El Salvador for fun. Thank you!
We're in Toronto. Our friends are in Chicago. We'd like to meet up roughly halfway between our cities over the Christmas break (i.e. in Michigan or Ontario), and rent a house or cottage somewhere quiet with some natural scenery. Any recommendations? [more inside]

Where in the world can we vacation and ring in the new year? As it's Nov now, we're terrible at planning. [more inside]
My wife and I are planning a last minute vacation for the week between Christmas and New Year's. We will be leaving from NYC and would like to go someplace warm where we can mostly relax and lay on the beach. Budget is ~5k-6k flights included. We are happily married lesbians and are not interested in pretending to be sisters/cousins/friends on our big vacation, so we are specifically looking for lgbt friendly destinations or possibly lgbt friendly resorts in moderately lgbt friendly locales. Back in the '50s my Mom took a trip with her friends to this tropical island somewhere in the Caribbean. Can anyone help me identify where these pictures were taken? Link to the gallery here.
My wife and I are looking for a 4-5 night stay in a couple of weeks. We want somewhere we can relax on the beach, that also has plenty of very healthy places to eat. Vegan-friendly choices are a plus, as are juice bars (or places that serve fresh fruit/veggie juice). [more inside]
Hi, all. My sister and I would like to take some time together for a trip this January. We need some help planning things out. [more inside]
We want to go somewhere sunny this winter. There are a bewildering number of travel websites hocking flight+hotel deals. Did you have a good experience with any of them? [more inside]
My brother and I would like to give my parents a large chunk of cash this Christmas with the intent that they use it to travel. How do we do this most effectively? [more inside]
After years of being on the fence about leaving and gritting my teeth while putting up with a shitty work environment, I'm ready to start applying for jobs. It's taken me a long time to get brave enough to do this, so I'm pretty happy that I'm going to pull the plug! But I feel like I can't start applying for positions because of an upcoming vacation, and I'm not sure what to do. [more inside]
We're going to Puerto Rico for a week after Christmas. We have hostel-type places booked in Vieques and Old San Juan for the first part of our trip, but we don't have plans for the 31st and 1st yet. What is the most awesome thing to do in San Juan on New Year's Eve? [more inside]
In Paris, we are looking for a recommendation for a 6 day apartment rental by owner or a hotel in the 6th arrondissement. We would like to pay a maximum of $200 Canadian per night. Though we are looking at the 6th, If you have a place to recommend in the 5th arrondissement, we would also be interested. if you can add a few details about the place, that would be appreciated.
A long-planned long weekend visit to DC to check out Harper's Ferry and Antietam in a few days has been infuriatingly stymied by the shutdown. The plan had been to go see a lot of stuff related to John Brown's Raid, Civil War battlefields, and African American art housed at the National Gallery. The trip was in part to do research for a creative writing project about Mr Brown, and part for some general shenanigans. Now what? [more inside]
I'd like to take two weeks off of work and come back with a new sense of direction in life. I have been in the same job for almost four years and find little fulfillment there, yet also haven't found the motivation or made the time to move on. Maybe some semi-structured time off work to think, mark next steps, and break patterns will help? How and where should I spend my time? [more inside]
We are two busy guys who need to blow off a bit of steam, but mostly relax in the sun, and want to go to Hawaii (or somewhere) but have never been and need advice! So, in November, where is it best for two (straight-ish) dudes to go in Hawaii who like to dance, drink, swim, meet new people and also really want to take photographs of beautiful things? Thanks team!
I am a contractor and am required to take leave due to the government shutdown. I have the choice of taking paid or unpaid leave. Given that I'm young with no dependents, my savings are in great shape right now, and my unused vacation will roll over into the next year, I am inclined to take leave without pay and save my paid vacation. Are there any drawbacks here that I'm not seeing? (I probably don't need to officially declare my choice until the end of the month, so long term advice in case this drags on is also helpful.)
I've chosen the destination for a surprise trip and have all the basics planned - how long can I can keep the secret going and how/when should I plan the reveal? [more inside]
Arriving noon on thursday in San Jose, departing 11am from San Jose. Would you say this is worth it and if so, where would you recommend going? [more inside]
I've got a layover in Reykjavik Keflavik next month that lasts just over 10 hours. I definitely want to check out Blue Lagoon, but will I have time to go into town and stroll around there briefly too? [more inside]
Mother of two sons here - they are all grown up and we are talking about taking our first out-of-state vacation in years. The problem is that we are vacation-planning inept and don't know where to start. It has to be as cheap as possible, but I'm not sure how to search or how to find deals. This is where you come in handy! We live in Cleveland, Ohio and are looking at somewhere on the west coast (perhaps San Francisco) or even Mexico/South America. (Europe is also an option, but perhaps very expensive?) We want it to be far enough away, and not too chilly (a bit is okay, and temperate is fine as well). [more inside]
Where, within 3-4 hours of Providence, RI, can a couple find a nice B&B with easy access to impressive foliage, good hiking, and some really excellent dining? We're particularly interested in VT and NH, although perhaps there are some options in MA. All responses welcome.
Trying to decide on a location for a mini family vacation over Thanksgiving weekend, with me, my dad, and his girlfriend. Seeking suggestions for where to go and what to do there. [more inside]

Where can I find a hotel, resort, vacation cabin or non-camping getaway within 100 miles of San Francisco that allows dogs and has EV charging - preferably this weekend? [more inside]
I grew up in Honolulu/Hawaii, so know where to shop, eat, and head out to find more secluded beaches, but am totally clueless on where to STAY while visiting! I've been going back to visit family each year for at least ten years now, and have progressively gone from sticking it out in my childhood bedroom at parent's house, to hippie hostels, mega multi-generation family resorts, and am now at a point in my life where I just want to visit "home" and relax, without feeling like a tourist shoved in an elevator with 40 other people on the way to breakfast every morning. Price is no object, $500-$1000/night is game. Any recommendations for smaller, intimate "boutique" hotels or villas in Hawaii? [more inside]
Is two weeks vacation standard? Help me decide if I should accept this job. [more inside]
Where should a family of 3 go for our vacation in Central America, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil or the Caribbean? [more inside]
My large family (it's going to be between 10 and 14 people - not sure yet) wants to gather for a few days at Christmastime. Money is an issue for some of us and so we can't do more than three nights. Understandably, most of the available rentals that would accommodate a group our size are in high demand areas, and they want a longer holiday stay than we can afford (and in many cases more money per night.) The thing is, we can be totally flexible with location. Anywhere in California between, say, Santa Rosa and San Luis Obispo would be fine, as long as it isn't snowy in December (ruling out the Tahoe area.) [more inside]
In the spring I made a decision to move back home to find myself and really figure out what it is I want to do with the rest of my life. I'd like to tread water carefully with my next adventure. What makes sense for me? [more inside]
