I've been working with this shop for a little more than a year. One of the few benefits is two weeks vacation after one year, actually it's 2 weeks vacation after 20 years also. So today I went to the manager and asked for a week off in August and a week in November. I was told since I had started May 25th of last year, I would only be able to get one week vacation. So this is how they work it, because there is a half a calendar year left, I get half of the two weeks of the vacation time it says i get printed on the benefits page. No where is this explained on any printed material. [more inside]
My husband and I would like to plan a nice vacation for an upcoming anniversary. Unfortunately, our ideas of what would make it a nice vacation are pretty far apart. Is there a place that would suit us both? Our special snowflake requirements inside. [more inside]
Do you know a great place near New York City for three generations of family to vacation for three to five days this summer? [more inside]
This year I'd like to travel to Europe or South America and have the best of both worlds: an urban, cultural experience and an outdoorsy, quiet experience. These could be within an hour train or plane ride of each other. Maybe split the trip in half. Where could I go? [more inside]
I need to plan and purchase the most complicated flight I've ever planned and purchased before. I am SUPER BROKE and SUPER FLEXIBLE. I'm hoping you can answer a few questions (inside) about how to plan this. [more inside]
With my wedding quickly approaching, my fiance and I need some help from the community in deciding where to go for our honeymoon. [more inside]

I just got a job offer (yay!) and I need help with negotiating benefits. Problem being that this is a very small and informal company while I've always worked at large multinationals with clear guidelines for these things. I have no idea how small companies work. [more inside]
My fabulous in-laws are taking the family on a trip to Ireland this summer. Please help us find the real gems! [more inside]
Planning Ahead Filter: My travel buddy already has a ticket on Airline A (ATL-LHR round trip) for our planned trip together in November. (Miles & awards redeemed so she is set). We're deciding what to do about my ticket. [more inside]
I have a month off and some saved up money and I want to travel to South America! Where should I travel? [more inside]
Need suggestions for an impromptu weekend getaway somewhere three-four hours from Philadelphia. [more inside]
My girlfriend and I are going to Kauai for vacation in May, we're spending the first two days South of Lihue on our own, and then meeting up with a big bunch of family in Princeville for a whole week. As two late twenties, gay, slightly geeky, not super hardcore outdoorsy types, what should we absolutely not miss during our trip? [more inside]
My husband and I are landing in Chicago for the first time on Saturday, May 3rd and will be there until the evening of the 5th. One purpose of the trip is to visit my husband's father, who has been living there for the last year, but the other is to explore Chicago. We are staying at La Quinta in Downtown Chicago, mainly because we got a good deal on it through Hotwire. My husband's dad lives at the Streeter, in the Near North Side area. What should we see while we're there? [more inside]
I'll be spending two weeks in South Africa at the end of August. Where should I go besides Cape Town and Johannesburg? [more inside]
I'd like to treat my parents to a night/weekend at a bed and breakfast, somewhere within an hour of the New Paltz/Kingston area of upstate NY. Any suggestions? [more inside]
Mr. Jeoc and I want to take a vacation this summer, but we're running out of time to make plans and are stumped on where to go. I will tell you about us and the places we've enjoyed, and perhaps you can tell us where we should plan to go. [more inside]
Need some quick ideas for a romantic mini-honeymoon in the near future. [more inside]
8-10 people want to rent a beach house in New Jersey for a weekend (ideally Asbury Park), hopefully for $50/person per night. Everything we've seen wants a week-long commitment. Is our New Jersey beach weekend feasible? [more inside]
Family is heading to the pinball nationals in Lyons CO on May 18. We want to expand our trip to involve some family funtime in the area in the week before the tournament. Where should we stay? What should we not miss? What should we avoid at all costs? More inside. [more inside]
Where should we go for a week-long honeymoon in early August? [more inside]
Now that we've paid the tax bill, we are thinking of scaling back a bit on our 10th anniversary trip this June.* We're leaving the kiddo with family in Pittsburgh PA and will have our car. We can drive to New York or DC or Appalachia or... you get the idea. Where should we go for 4-7 days that is some combination of fun, romantic, diverse, interesting, etc? We'd like to feel like we had a great experience for a great value. [more inside]
Mr. just_ducky and I want to go away to Europe this summer, but are having trouble narrowing down our list of cities into a workable itinerary. Can you help us, wise travelers of MeFi? [more inside]
My friend and I want to go on vacation in late May, somewhere in the US. No relaxing and lying around by a body of water. No touristy stuff. Where should we go? [more inside]
My partner and I would like to get away in May for 5 days. We differ a bit in what we like. He'd prefer an all-inclusive relaxing beach and I'd prefer some sort of adventure. [more inside]
Where in the world should we take a two week vacation in late May with a toddler and an infant? We'll be traveling from southeast Asia to the US and can basically fly anywhere on the way back at no charge. (We'll still have to pay for lodging, food, entertainment, etc.). We're leaning towards somewhere in Europe, but are open to other ideas. Suggestions? [more inside]
I am looking for a relaxing weekend by myself within a 4 hour radius of my home (Scranton, PA). I have been searching airbnb for cabins in specific towns that I know of, but I don't think I'm getting all of the areas I should.
Do you know of a cute town or specific cabin rental in the northeast PA, lower NY state, upper WV, or NJ area that I should look at for a luxurious weekend getaway by myself. My main requirements are wifi and a big tub. I can bring my own groceries so I don't care if it's remote.
I would like to take about a week-and-a-half-long trip in late May / early June of 2014. I originally wanted to go to Machu Picchu to hike the Inca Trail. However, after some research, I'm not sure if it's the best option for me. [more inside]
Wife and I are planning to visit Albuquerque, NM this May. We will rent a car, and be there for one week. Where should we go? We've never been to the region. [more inside]

I'm tagging along with my wife as she goes to a conference in Atlanta this week. We'll be staying Downtown Wednesday through Saturday (leaving Saturday afternoon). What's to do? Caveat: no car. [more inside]
Aside from Miami, does Florida have any place that has a culture not predominantly catering to retirees, families, or tourists? I'm an early thirties guy looking to spend a weekend somewhere in the state with a friend that's interesting, authentic, and youthful. Being near water is a nice to have, but not a requirement. [more inside]
My spring break runs effectively from March 14th to the 23rd. Originally I had plans to head to NYC for a couple of days and then to Delaware, spending the whole week with a good friend of mine. He will now be out of the country, so I'm flying solo and looking for something different. I should work two days in between, but I can make up the hours if needed. Details inside include what I [think I] am looking for ideally. [more inside]
I am looking for vacations in which somebody else is in control and I am actively taking part in it. For example, taking a trip to an archeological dig and taking part in the dig itself. Or learning how to be a crew member on a yacht. Burning Man is also an example in that I am taking part of the event. A cowboy cattle-drive. Yachting would be cool. I am also intrigued by NASA though I am not sure if they have anything like this. Creating art. Cooking vacations. Stuff like this.
Please let the ideas rip. No holding back :)
Looking for tips on how to do Hawaii affordably. My GF and I would like to go for about 5-7 days and if we can keep air, lodging and car rental to $1000 each we'd be happy. We realize that may not be possible. Since many aspects of a trip to Hawaii seem to be more expensive than other sunny getaways we're researching any ways to keep costs lower. [more inside]
Is the ongoing drought a good reason to postpone a planned summer trip to Northern California to another year? We were thinking of spending a week around SF/Napa/Sonoma in August. Interested in things like parks/hiking, wineries, farmers markets.
Mr. Liet and I would like to go to continental Europe this summer, hitting a bunch of cities over about two weeks. We're looking at tour groups, because we want everything taken care of in advance and we want to be guided to the coolest stuff. However, we're young and active and want to tour with other young, active people too. [more inside]
We have done a long weekend at the Delaware shore with friends for the past few summers, and would like to try a new place. We'd like to go somewhere where we can swim with toddlers and babies (so no rough ocean--the Delaware bay was great for this) and is not too far a drive for either of us. [more inside]
I need help coming up with a vacation place for this year for the week after Christmas that won't break the bank. It's harder that it seems, and so I'm hoping you all can help out. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
The wife and I would like a relaxing, ~4 day spring break getaway the weekend of March 14. Difficulties: we'd prefer no more than ~4 hours driving or ~6 hours in a plane. Would prefer to avoid spring break crowds. We live in Pittsburgh. I'd like somewhere warmer than Pittsburgh. [more inside]
My in-laws are flying in from India to Boston. They've never been to Canada and are curious to see the Eastern part including Toronto, Ottawa, Quebuc, Montreal. Do you have any recommendations on guiding tour companies which they may enjoy. (Please note, they aren't open to renting a car, so I'm researching guided tour options).
Thanks in advance,
Wifey and I are headed to Hawaii for our first vacation post-pregnancy. We've loved staying at B&B's in the past, but don't want our hosts or other guests to cringe when we show up with our 6-month-old daughter. Be honest: have we outgrown this mode of lodging?? [more inside]
We'd like to spend a week each in Orkney and Shetland this (late August/early September). We love bikes, photography, historical monuments/museums. What are we not thinking of/what would you recommend? [more inside]
What nature trails are recommended in the area? What tours are there [art, science, culture, nature] that are budget-friendly and deep in interesting information? Where is the best beach within an hour? [more inside]
We'll be going to Las Vegas for a long weekend next week and I'm looking for suggestions that are a little more off the beaten track. Some things I've found on Yelp so far that fit the profile, Drink and Drag bowling
, Grouchy John's Coffee Shop
, Freakin' Frog

How is El Salvador as a travel destination in May? I'm thinking of going to El Salvador for the last week in May this year and am a little concerned about the weather ( rain in particular ). Is the weather there bad enough that I should think about other options? Are there particular areas that I should either avoid or make a point of visiting at that time of year?
My growing office of 10 is thinking about developing a vacation scheduling/leave request policy, and I'd be responsible for managing it. Staff get about 3-4 weeks vacation every year, and we're in a student service office in a university setting in the US. Before now there were no scheduling snafus, because we closed over the holidays. BUt a new policy has come down - we'll be open over the holidays. So could you tell me how your office juggles vacation leave requests in general, and what you think of it? How do you manage leave over the holidays or other popular times? Do you think seniority is fair? Or should leave be first requested, first serve? What do you think is the best way to develop a leave request policy? I'd like to have a policy that is sensible and user friendly, based on a process that is transparent and fair. HR is giving us leeway on determining a policy and at the very least, I'll ask everyone in the office what they think. But I thought I'd also ask you, hivemind. All suggestions welcome.
Minnesota winter has drained me of the will to live. Help me find a warm, US vacation. Criteria inside. [more inside]
I'm heading to an all-inclusive resort with my significant other, and this is the first time either of us has ever done it (specifically this
resort in the Dominican Republic).
Tickets booked, hepatitis vaccine injected, but are there any other tips and tricks to getting the most out of doing this kind of vacation that I should know in advance?
How do I get the most of out my trip?
