We will be staying on Upper West Side at 73rd near Broadway from October 9-17. Could you please suggest places to go and things to do? 1. Favorite breakfast places nearby? 2. Favorite things to do in NYC, low to moderate cost? 3. Favorite restaurants for lunch or dinner, both moderately priced and splurgy? 4. Any special events or festivals going on at that time? 5. Any guesses about the weather and how many warm clothes to pack? 6. Inspirations that I haven't thought of? Thanks Hivemind. [more inside]
tl;dr: My life fell apart, I'm exhausted and not really sure where to go from here. Thinking seriously about a vacation/retreat; looking for suggestions on where I might go, and books/workbooks to take with me. [more inside]
There are 4 of us that have been friends for a lifetime, and we all now have families that we want to get together. There will be 8 adults and 5 kids varying in age from 1 year to 13 years. All boys. We are in our 30s. 3 sets of families live all across North Carolina, and one lives in Illinois. Where can we go for a family vacation with a soft budget of $2000? [more inside]
My trip to Switzerland and Austria sneaked up on me. It's also my first international conference. I have hotels booked. What's left to do? What can I expect when I'm there? [more inside]
We are planning a long-awaited big summer vacation for July/August 2015. For many years, I've kept Croatia as a possibility for a trip like this, as it seems like it has a bit of everything we like - interesting cities, access to the outdoors and it seems to be a fairly 'easy' trip to enjoy without a huge amount of planning. For various reasons, I'm wondering if you could suggest other options. I've included a list of our desired trip components and would love specific suggestions! [more inside]
If I decided at the last minute to take a vacation, and wanted to get a really cheap deal on a flight and hotel package, and didn't really care where I went (let's say, "somewhere in Hawaii" or "somewhere in Mexico or Central America"), where would I look to find such a thing? Reputable vendors only, of course. Would it be better to search online or just to call a travel agent?
I need some fabulous 72-hour vacation ideas from DC! Mr. bowtiesarecool and I enjoy travel when we can, and we're in a good life stage for it (good jobs, some discretionary income, no kids, no sick relatives, no pets, no houseplants, easy to up and go when we want). Mr. bowtiesarecool has three-day weekends every week, but basically no leave beyond that. Please help me come up with an idea stash of fun, worthwhile ways we can get the heck out of Dodge in those three-day, two-night chunks! [more inside]
I'd like some ideas for warm-weather Christmas vacations for a family with special needs. [more inside]
I'm planning to visit Art Prize 2014 in Grand Rapids, MI, with a friend. We'll be going on weekdays. My schedule is flexible, such that I could spend about a day extra in either Chicago (where I'm flying in/out) or Grand Rapids. I will not have a car for this extra day, but I will for the 1.5 days that my friend will be with me in Grand Rapids. What are the pros/cons of spending my extra time in Chicago or Grand Rapids? Is 1.5 days enough time to see Art Prize? [more inside]
We'll be staying in Watertown, NY Sept. 25-28. I'll be doing other research but I wanted to ask the Green for recommendations. So... any must sees, recommendations for tours, food, etc... [more inside]
This question is about maternity leave benefits (employment insurance) in Canada. Please know I have read everything online that I can and called Service Canada several times, but their recording says that there is such a high volume of calls they can't even put me on hold to talk to a human, it only gives me the option to listen to the recording or hang up. My question is regarding unpaid vacation time that is owed to me but I might not have time to take all of before starting maternity leave. Questions below. [more inside]
My girlfriend and I have lived, pool-less, in LA for about 3 years now. We decided that we'd take a little mini-vacation this weekend and check out some part of the city we'd never seen. Unfortunately, its labor day and our attempts to low-ball Priceline aren't bearing fruit. More inside! [more inside]
My girlfriend and I have spent several hours picking out places to stay from AirBNB listings in Copenhagen. It SEEMS like there are so many wonderful, available places to stay. But my booking requests (5 so far) have all been declined by the hosts. What's going on here? How do I get a successful booking? [more inside]
My family and I are trying to pick a spot for a vacation together this winter, and we could use some help finding a spot that will work well for everyone. Desires described below: [more inside]
I'd like to take more weekend trips outside of NYC. I don't drive. Where should I go, and how should I get there? [more inside]

A month ago I asked for help picking a place for our upcoming vacation. Based in part on community suggestions, we ended up booking a place in Wildwood, NJ, for the first week in September. Now help me make my beach vacation with two very small kids as awesome as possible! [more inside]
A last-minute injury put a halt on our planned anniversary travel. What is the most fun/exciting/interesting/relaxing place we can go or thing we can do instead, given our limitations? [more inside]
I'll be in London for a party & wedding over two weekends, and need ideas for domestic travel during the week in between, and the few days after. I've been to UK before, but all i've really seen is central london, Oxford, and Stonehenge. (i'll be clearer about my schedule and needs after the jump!) [more inside]
I want to take a vacation at the end of September/early October with the following requirements. 1. No driving. 2. English-speaking or tourist-friendly for people who do not speak the language. 3. Relaxing. 4. Easy for first-time solo traveler. [more inside]
For my rapidly approaching 50th birthday I would like to hang out by a lake and listen to some loons. Any suggestions for towns in NH or Vermont where I might accomplish this? Bonus points for recommendations of comfortable and relatively inexpensive lodging. Super duper bonus points for knowledge of handicapped accessible parks or trails in the vicinity. Thank you!
Warmish in late November, good for walking, inexpensive. Somewhere in South America? [more inside]
My 2 friends and I (in our 20s & 30s, 1 gay, 1 lesbian and 1 straight guy) are staying in Absecon, NJ this weekend. We are looking for something more than a secluded beach but less than Atlantic City boardwalk. We plan on relaxing on the beach during the day and finding some nightlife if possible. Can you recommend places nearby with a laid back feel and some activity. Perhaps places like a beach bar, outdoor band, mini golf, good cheap eats, must sees and local delights. We have a car and are open to traveling a half hour in any direction. Thanks!
We're off for a late-booked trip to Vancouver in August and need to find a place to stay. Most hotels are booked in the West End/Downtown/Yaletown area. What hotels would you recommend that are moderately ($100-200) priced with easy transit access to tourist attractions? We'd like to use public transit if possible, but can rent a car if public transit is infeasible. We will have at least one member of our party who can't walk longish distances, and a toddler to deal with as well, so frequent bus changes may be a challenge. We were looking at the Holiday Inn Express Burnaby, is this a sane choice?
Completely indecisive person seeking an end of September/early October 3-4 day trip from DC - short drive, train, or plane trip for around 1k. No idea where I want to go, but the only must is a room/balcony with a really beautiful nature view. [more inside]
My husband and I are in the beginning stages of planning our first vacation in a few years. It'll be our first vacation with kids; our daughters are 13 months and 2.5 years. We will be going in September. I'd prefer to stay in the Eastern time zone so we don't have to mess with sleep schedules. We have to stay in the US, as neither kid has a passport. We'd prefer to drive so we can set our own pace. Budget for the whole shebang is $1,000 - $1,500. [more inside]
My wife and I are planning a vacation to Charlottesville, VA and Asheville, NC at the beginning of August. We plan to stay three nights in each city. We plan to do some hiking as well as city stuff. What are your favorite places in that area, and what would you recommend doing?
My girlfriend and I will be taking a road trip from Pittsburgh to Port Clyde, Maine and back to visit my vacationing parents. Where should we stop along the way? [more inside]
I need to quickly firm up planning for our August vacation in Oregon and Northern California; we have about 10 days to spend and I haven't gotten very as far in terms of specifics. Degree of Difficulty: 16yo daughter and non-drinking husband [more inside]

At the end of the month, my girlfriend and I are heading to Nova Scotia. We'll be staying with a friend in Pictou for a few days, then renting a car out of New Glasgow and heading off on our own. We have four days (three nights) before we fly out of Halifax...and no plans at all. Where should we go? Recommendations for nature/odd attractions/good food wanted. Particularly lovely towns? Good routes? Places to stay?
SO and I want to take a short trip for his birthday next month (end of August). We have a few ideas, but thought I'd ask you all for some suggestions we may have missed. [more inside]
We are going on vacation in October and are having a minor disagreement as to the best way to handle the care of our cat while we're gone. SO thinks we should drop the cat off at his mother's house for the week, I disagree. Am I being unreasonable? [more inside]
We're heading to Croatia for a week at the end of August, probably staying around the Split area. Your recommendations for accommodation and sightseeing would be appreciated. [more inside]
It’s been a stressful year thus far and I really need to get away for a few days, but alas, none of my friends are available for a trip right now. I’d love to go somewhere in mid/late August. I have a bunch of requirements, of course! [more inside]
So, my boyfriend of six months and I are heading to NYC tonight and staying 'til Sunday. I have a up against a wall with an approaching work deadline and because of my own poor planning will need to do a little bit of chipping-away-at-it while we're there. I need to carve out three or four 3/4-hour (ish) focused working sessions during our trip, and I wanted to ask the hive mind if anyone familiar with the city could suggest any non-awful ways to handle this. Light flurries inside... [more inside]
Thanks to some ridiculous flight deals, a friend of mine and I are headed to Japan for two weeks. The catch/opportunity: the flight is next February. There's probably a bunch of really neat things to do in Japan that unfortunately have huge waiting lists or need to be planned well in advance, right? For once in my life, we are those people planning well in advance! So what neat things with long waiting lists should we sign up for now? [more inside]
Hi all, the girlfriend and I are planning a trip for the August long weekend, and we'd like to go somewhere where we can do a moderately exertional day hike (i.e. 5-6 hrs or so). We were thinking about heading to the Bruce peninsula, but despite our combined Google-fu, we're having trouble locating specific hikes (as in, "Start at point x, see nice things y, finish at point z") that meet our criteria. We're going to be getting the reference guide to the Bruce from the library, but I was wondering if anyone had specific ideas about good, scenic day hikes that would be feasibly within a 3-4 hour drive of Toronto. Areas other than the Bruce also considered! Bonus points for access to a beach in the area (e.g. on Georgian Bay or a lake). [more inside]
My friend and I are driving the Iceland Ring Road the first two weeks of August. Should I book accommodations in advance? Or would it be OK to book along the way (or just show up at places). [more inside]
My family will be vacationing with another on a houseboat. Total of 4 adults and 5 kids, all good eaters (but the kids are kids, too). We are trying to optimize our food and seeking wisdom from those with experience. [more inside]
I work an extremely stressful seasonal job. I start getting 2 days off a week starting in July. My girlfriend and I love going to the Asbury Park beach. We usually go in August/September, but I NEED a break now. I suffer from anxiety and the laid back vibe of the beach coupled with the relaxation of the water calms me. My concern is that earlier in the year the beach will be packed and the hotels will be expensive. Does anyone have any experience with this location this time of year? I don't like tons of people. Are there any alternatives in the tri-state area? It doesn't even have to be a beach. It just has to be relatively inexpensive and RELAXING!!! Something that includes nature is a big plus (especially water). I'm not a fan of camping. Thank you in advance!
I want to take a road trip this summer but have no idea where. I'm willing to drive within about a 10 hour radius of Champaign, IL. Specifications inside. [more inside]
I'm going to a conference in Lisbon in mid-July, but my partner and I are flying to Portugal 5 days early to check it out. We've never been before, and we'd like to explore somewhere other than Lisbon during that time--2 other towns at most. Which should we choose? [more inside]
Please help me make the most of my vacation (staying just outside Oxford) the last week of July (7/28-8/1). (The Faulkner conference will take place the previous week - dang.) I am familiar with the town generally, but plan to be showing it (and north MS generally) off to a friend those last few days. Thacker Mountain Radio does not have a schedule posted for then, nor does Square Books, nor the Ford Center. I know it is a ridiculous time of year to travel there, but that's not negotiable. Any ideas?
Let's say you wanted to take between 3 and 6 months off in order to write. What inexpensive, amazing place would you go? [more inside]
I'm looking for a quiet vacation spot near nature and living creatures for our April vacation. We are traveling from Boston are are pretty open to locations. [more inside]
I want to rent a small cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a couple of nights (June 27-29). I'm having trouble finding the things I want. [more inside]
I've got a wife, two small kids, a dog (although the dog doesn't always come with us), and an insatiable urge to get the hell out of LA in July. Where should we go? We'd like to rent a house in an area that's not too pricey but still nice and clean. Has to be within, say, a 4 hour drive of LA. Near the beach is a plus. Maybe not completely swamped with people is a plus. Are there any hidden gems, or should we just go to Santa Barbara like everyone else?
