I live in the Deep South; everyone goes to the beach for vacation. I hate the beach in the summertime (it is way too hot). Where should my wife & go on vacation this summer? I would like a cold, deep lake to swim in, hiking trails, and some privacy. She would like a cottage or cabin on said lake. Would prefer an area that is LGBT friendly (will settle for agnostic), and that we can get to on Delta (we have vouchers to burn).
My wife & four kids & I will be in St. Paul for a long visit in the middle of July. What should be on our schedule -- both things new in the last few years, and time-tested favorites? I grew up in St. Paul but moved away a long time ago; we bring the kids out in the summer to spend time with family. We haven't been out in a couple of summers, so I want this one to be awesome! Hi all, the girlfriend and I are planning a trip for the August long weekend, and we'd like to go somewhere where we can do a moderately exertional day hike (i.e. 5-6 hrs or so). We were thinking about heading to the Bruce peninsula, but despite our combined Google-fu, we're having trouble locating specific hikes (as in, "Start at point x, see nice things y, finish at point z") that meet our criteria. We're going to be getting the reference guide to the Bruce from the library, but I was wondering if anyone had specific ideas about good, scenic day hikes that would be feasibly within a 3-4 hour drive of Toronto. Areas other than the Bruce also considered! Bonus points for access to a beach in the area (e.g. on Georgian Bay or a lake). [more inside]
I want to rent a small cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a couple of nights (June 27-29). I'm having trouble finding the things I want. [more inside]

We have done a long weekend at the Delaware shore with friends for the past few summers, and would like to try a new place. We'd like to go somewhere where we can swim with toddlers and babies (so no rough ocean--the Delaware bay was great for this) and is not too far a drive for either of us. [more inside]
Girlfriend and I are looking to get away this August, and we're looking for destinations. We want to spend ~10 days relaxing, experiencing some natural beauty, being warm, eating delicious food (both of the restaurant variety and the pick-up-bread-and-cheese-from-the-local-vendor variety) and generally unplugging from day-to-day life. Not big partiers, but we'd frequent the local cafe/pub. Something like a little cottage in the south of France would be our dream, but we're working with a budget of ~$4000 all-inclusive, so France may have to wait. We're 30ish and live in Boston. Idea us please!

Where should newlyweds travel over the Christmas holiday? My fiancée and I are going to spend our first Christmas together as a married couple apart from our families. We are trying to decide where we should go. We aren't looking to do something on a super small budget (like no hostels, shared showers, etc.), but we also can't spend an obscene amount. We enjoy beaches, food, culture, and maybe some adventure. We are going to Mexico for our honeymoon so that is out. We are traveling from NYC if that influences your ideas. We welcome all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

What would you do for a month and a half in New York City? [more inside]
I have the month of August between jobs and my girlfriend and I would like to find somewhere we can spend a chunk of my generous signing bonus - budget of $100/day. We both prefer getting to know a relatively small place (island, area, city) to traveling, and we both prefer relaxing/low key places to big cities. Any thoughts? [more inside]
