Solo Travel filter: I'm traveling by myself for the first time to NYC July 4-8. Having never traveled by myself, I'm looking for tips and recommendations on the solo travel experience as well as solo activities that are relatively inexpensive or free.

I'll be spending two days in Manhattan, all by my lonesome. I'm not interested in gettin' my culture on. What should I do? My boyfriend bought me a night in a Midtown hotel. Awww. However, my stay has to take place this weekend (Fri./Sat.), when he'll be unavailable to join me. I'm shy/nerdy, so this puts the kibosh on super-social activities. However, I'm ALSO not terribly interested in seeing any museums/cultural attractions on this trip. Don't get me wrong - those things are delightful! - but it's spring break, so I'd like my trip to be a lil' more indulgent/eclectic/badass.

My wife and I will be taking a trip to New York City next week and don't really know what to do with ourselves after dinner. Please keep us from watching late night TV in our hotel room!

I've been tasked with taking 8 members of my family, needing five bedrooms from the UK to New York in June 2009. Any advice on group booking deals and the like, for flights and/or hotels? Am I looking too early for good deals?

As luck would have it, my
previous question has fizzled out.
Same people travelling, but this time, we're heading to New York City from Waverly, NY, and only staying for the weekend (5/22 or 23-5/25).

We've decided to take a vacation this summer with another family. We've been looking at Lake George and the Acadia area, but it's hard to find something for 10 people. Does anyone have recommendation for a vacation spot that isn't as popular, maybe a "best kept secret" kind of place? We're looking for a place on the water (coastal or inland), with places to hike, maybe a funky little town nearby. We're in Central Mass and willing to travel 6 hours in any direction.

I'd like to rent an inexpensive cabin, somewhere picturesque and north of NYC, with room enough to fit 6 people who don't mind crashing on the floor in sleeping bags, for one weekend in October or November this fall. What can you tell me?
