Must-do, must-see New England activities for a family

Mrs. Ferg and I are planning a trip to New England in June with the smaller Fergs. Since my previous questions about travel activities have been successes, I'm here to query the hive-mind about what our agenda should include to get the maximal "New England" experience. Of course, there's [more inside]

Remote New England vacations

My wife and I are looking for a week to two week vacation to take with our 5 year old daughter some time between April and August of this year. One thing we're looking at doing is renting a USFS cabin in Alaska and camping there, but I'm also considering a trip to New England. I'm wondering if there's anything there which would meet our wants. [more inside]

Recommend Cold, Awesome Places for a Vacation

I'm going to be starting a little sabbatical from work around Thanksgiving time, and we want to take a vacation trip to kick it off. It'll be approaching winter, and I've always been fascinated by the idea of cold northern oceanfront places with fantastic storms and windswept beaches. Something like the setting of The Ghost Writer, beautiful and austere landscape, cozy house right on the water. Can anyone recommend a town or place to look, maybe pacific northwest or new england? My experience with VRBO-style rentals in California has been good, and dog-friendly would be a big plus.

Summer Rentals in New England/New York?

We've decided to take a vacation this summer with another family. We've been looking at Lake George and the Acadia area, but it's hard to find something for 10 people. Does anyone have recommendation for a vacation spot that isn't as popular, maybe a "best kept secret" kind of place? We're looking for a place on the water (coastal or inland), with places to hike, maybe a funky little town nearby. We're in Central Mass and willing to travel 6 hours in any direction.
