Please help me plan a (grown-up) family vacation for this Xmas in the New England area (Connecticut and north, probably?). This
"Winter fun for the Non-Skier" list is a good start, but I don't really know how to put something together into a reasonable itinerary.

Any suggestions for inns or small hotels that incorporate modern/minimalist design? I'm trying to avoid the Victorian, lace, floral aesthetic. I'm particularly interested in the New England/East Coast area.

I'm going to be starting a little sabbatical from work around Thanksgiving time, and we want to take a vacation trip to kick it off. It'll be approaching winter, and I've always been fascinated by the idea of cold northern oceanfront places with fantastic storms and windswept beaches. Something like the setting of The Ghost Writer, beautiful and austere landscape, cozy house right on the water.
Can anyone recommend a town or place to look, maybe pacific northwest or new england? My experience with VRBO-style rentals in California has been good, and dog-friendly would be a big plus.

Obscure New England? I've seen the best, what about the rest? What quirky, "second tier," and out of the way places have I missed?

We've decided to take a vacation this summer with another family. We've been looking at Lake George and the Acadia area, but it's hard to find something for 10 people. Does anyone have recommendation for a vacation spot that isn't as popular, maybe a "best kept secret" kind of place? We're looking for a place on the water (coastal or inland), with places to hike, maybe a funky little town nearby. We're in Central Mass and willing to travel 6 hours in any direction.

Summer Vacation - My little family wants to rent a cabin (next to a swimmin' lake) for a week this summer somewhere in the north east of the USA, hopefully for less than $1000, any suggestions?

We live in Boston and would like to get away for the weekend to somewhere woodsy and beautiful. The problem: we don't have a car and can't rent one. What's a good getaway that's accessible by bus or, preferably, train?
