My SO and I are planning a long weekend trip up to Chicago with another couple in the fall. Wondering about the places to stay and things to do. We will most likely be driving so we'll have a car to get around town, so where we stay doesn't neccesarily have to be in the hub of all the touristy crap that we'll no doubt want to do at some point. I'm more concerned about other things. Details inside.

This will be the biggest vacation yet for our family of four (son age 10, daughter age 12). Our vacations tend to run unsmoothly--some ugly surprise always pops up--and I'd like to get opinions from people who know Chicago before we set out. This will be a kid oriented trip.

I'm looking to rent a house or cabin on New Year's Eve and the night before for 15-20 people. It needs to be within 4 hours of Chicago, and ideally within 4 hours of Iowa City as well, though the Iowa people can probably stop over in Chicago if the place is worth the longer trip. I've found places online, but thought I'd query the hive mind to see if anyone knows of somewhere super awesome I haven't found.

I'm going to be in Chicago in late July, and was hoping some locals could tip me on finding the best Lebanese food, jazz clubs/events that I shouldn't miss, interesting art galleries maybe even local theater if they're doing something fun.

I want to go on a photography weekend trip next month. I'm in Chicago, and want to drive no more than 6-8 hours to a destination. With my preferences (inside) in mind, I'd like advice on where to go. Help?

I'm going to Chicago in June for a weekend. Where should I go to find the following:
- Cool neighborhood with coffee shops where I can get a copy of Illinois Entertainer and Chicago Reader
- Best music equipment store in Chicago or northern suburbs (I'm staying in exciting Itasca)
- Something unique and fun to do on a Sunday afternoon

Does anyone know of a passenger ferry service which leaves from Chicago and goes on Lake Michigan to ANYWHERE? I'm looking to get away for a weekend to somewhere in maybe Wisconsin or Michigan (think Door County or Mackinac Island) and would like to not have to drive much, if possible. I thought it would be fun to take a boat ride to my destination starting from the lake in Chicago, but so far have not found anything online. Chicagoans, let me in on your secrets!

I'm going to CHICAGO in mid-August. I'll be there strictly for entertainment purposes only, so anything is possible. I've never been to Chicago (which is why I'm going) and would love to hear what some of you think are the best things to do, the best places to visit, and the best places to eat. What are the best places to have a beer(s) and see a band? Can I safely rely on public transportation or should I rent a car? How hard is it to get Cubs tickets (they have a home series against the Dodgers that week). Thanks!
