My company's LAN is fast and reliable, except for the connection to one building. Inside that building is an unattended WinXP-Pro system running basically one program 24/7, that we need to be able to monitor. Typically, we only need to interact with the computer >1% of the time, but we need to be able to make sure the software up and running, without problems, all the time.

Please help me configure and secure my Ubuntu-based combined home file server/public web server/VNC server! I am building a low-ish power home file server, which will likely run Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10 (possibly server edition), and I should be able to set up a basic samba share easily enough. But I would also like to use the same computer to serve a few basic webpages, and I would like to provide ssh and ideally VNC or RDP-like access from outside the LAN. I can probably get the basic software set up, but I'm a n00b when it comes to NAT stuff, firewalls, and security issues generally. I would also appreciate help with setting up dynamic DNS.

Use case scenarios: now that iPhones, iPads and Android devices can do a lot of what desktops can do, either natively or through web apps, what are some of the biggest uses/implementations of those devices to access remote computers? In other words, what do YOU use mobile remote desktop services for?

I connect to my PowerMac G5 (running OS 10.4.11) at work over a corporate vpn using a Macbook Pro (running OS 10.5.5). I do this using VPN (Vine Server and Vine Viewer), but I have to remain logged into my work computer in order to establish a connection. Is there a way to leave my work computer at a login screen (not logged in) and still keep Vine running so I can connect, then login to OS X? I currently have Vine set up to prompt me for a password, but anybody could still sit down at my work computer and use it because I have to remain logged into OS X.

In OS X Leopard, what is the difference between enabling the Screen Sharing and Remote Management options in Sharing Preferences? Assuming I can figure out firewall/port issues, will enabling Remote Management on my work Mac enable me to establish a VNC connection using a generic VNC client like Chicken of the VNC or do I have to use Remote Desktop? What authorization is required? Can I set it up so it requires my usual Mac username and password rather than some other password? Do I have other options if I want people using Linux and Windows to remotely manage their Macs at work when they are not logged in at the terminal?

Warning: Networking Geekery Ahead Once upon a time I was able to use VNC viewer (the binary executable, not the java viewer) on my work Windows XP PC to connect to VNC server on my home Windows XP PC via Port 443. This allowed me to view and control my home desktop in a window on my work PC and thereby do an end run around the restrictive web filter/firewall at work. It was slow, but it was still useable and reliable.
I stopped using it for a couple of weeks when I lost my USB key. I recently found it and tried my VNC connection again from work. It doesn't work now.

What options do I have to work with a colleague in a different office on a shared document in real-time?
I want to be able to open a word document and allow a user to watch/participate (view-only would be acceptable too) in the editing process.
VNC or remote-desktop are not really options because there are two corporate firewalls in place and no VPN connections. Even a joint text editor would be ok in a pinch, just copy/paste from Word and back when complete.
As always, free is better.
