Best way to convert VHS tapes to digital files?

I've got more than 40 family home videos on VHS tapes that I want to convert to digital on my Windows 7 PC. I realize that I'm probably overthinking this but I want to do a good job. My goal is to capture the VHS tapes at the best possible quality for posterity, and for online viewing and maybe DVDs, too. At the same time I don't want to chase after rapidly diminishing returns, as VHS quality isn't the best to begin with. My problem is that I don't know where to draw the line. [more inside]

Give me the best short bursts of horror/VHS/halloween nostalgia you got.

I'm putting together a Halloween marathon party this weekend, with a few horror movies (about evenly split between good and cheesy selections), and lots of video interludes in between that speak to a sense of pre-2000 horror/VHS/halloween nostalgia. I need your help on the interludes. I'm finding it hard to pick the exact vibe I'm looking for, but for examples: [more inside]

Where'd this videocassette warehouse thought experiment come from?

I remember reading somewhere about an imaginary giant warehouse that contains every possible VHS cassette. In my memory, the author went on to say that this warehouse contains every movie ever made, and every movie that will ever be made. It contains e.g. the 'Mad Men' series finale, and a tape that's nothing but static, except for one frame of the 'Mona Lisa.' You get the drift. I think it was in an essay someplace, but I may be mistaken. What's the source of this thought experiment?

Nursery rhyme movie, help me find it!

This movie is a straight-to-VHS, released pre-1990, and features live-action reenactments of nursery rhymes with occasional use of illustrations for the more animal-based rhymes (though I do remember Humpty Dumpty being portrayed in live-action). [more inside]

Can "Where Seconds Count" a REACT/Red Cross training video be seen online or otherwise found?

Someone I know who is a volunteer would like a copy of the REACT/Red Cross produced video "Where Seconds Count". No-Go Video?

Help me preserve memories and save money... I have several old VHS home movies I'm trying to digitize so I can preserve them and edit together the good parts. I used a GoVideo machine to create DVDs that are playable. But I can't copy the DVD files to my PC or otherwise rip them. I sent one of my tapes to a company and their DVD copies to my PC and into my movie editor without a hitch. What gives? Do I have to suck up the cost and send the rest in to the service? What's the phone-like sound at the end of my video tapes?

So I've been watching a bunch of older movies on VHS like Wait Until Dark (1963) and Sword in the Stone (1967). At the end when everything's black, right before it turns to the black and white noise, there's a sound of a phone dialing very quickly, or something similar. Anybody else ever noticed it? Out of curiosity, any ideas on what that is, how it happens, why it's there, or anything at all about it?
