Audio Cassette Tapes. VHS tapes. 1/4" Reel-to-Reel tapes. If it's magnetic and stringy and housed in plastic casing, I have it. Quite a few boxes. A few shrink wrapped, some new in box, many more used. Besides craigslist -> free, does anyone have a use for my deprecated media? [more inside]

So I've been watching a bunch of older movies on VHS like Wait Until Dark (1963) and Sword in the Stone (1967). At the end when everything's black, right before it turns to the black and white noise, there's a sound of a phone dialing very quickly, or something similar. Anybody else ever noticed it? Out of curiosity, any ideas on what that is, how it happens, why it's there, or anything at all about it?

Does anyone know if there is a way to recycle old VHS tapes? I just finished digitizing a bunch of material that my girlfriend has recorded to VHS over the years, and now we have about 20 VHS tapes that I don't know what to do with. It seems like a shame to throw them a way.

I am looking for a reliable and cost-effective manner to convert a single VHS tape to DVD. I don't have a camcorder or any other equipment to do the job and local shops have quoted me prices in the $100 range. I found several online set-ups that advertise in the $20 range, but I am looking for recommendations before I send the VHS tape off.

I'm looking for a copy of the Muppet pilot that was on tv in the mid-70s.
Googling found this: Before it became a syndicated series, Jim Henson and his associates produced The Muppet Show Pilot: Sex and Violence for ABC. It featured Muppet Show characters Dr. Teeth, Janice, Animal, and others. Notably, it featured a tribute to the Seven Deadly Sins. [more inside]

I'm looking for a DVD (any region or format) or vhs video (ntsc only) of Kansas City Bomber. I don't think it's ever been legally released in the USA--though it has in the UK-- though apparently it was a TV staple in the late 70s. Wondering if anyone knows if it's currently available anywhere in the world or if anyone has a copy they recorded from television. Thanks!

VHS > DVD recorder combo. I am looking for a combo unit that allows one to record from a source VHS tape (as well as a connected MiniDV cam) directly to the built-in DVD. A good price is a bonus, but reliability and quality are more important. Any suggestions? [no more inside]

Do any MeFites have ideas/experience/recommendations for a way to archive VHS tapes to DVD? So far my Google-fu has turned up software that requires having to add video cards to computers, plus a DVD burner, etc. My work would prefer a product that is a stand-alone thing that you can pop in a tape, then convert it to DVD and pop out a DVD. Is there such a thing?

Rutger Hauer + Big Guns + Kim Cattrall Topless = Split Second, a 1992 Sci-Fi flick that is selling for too much money on Amazon. I need this flick on DVD, not VHS, and I need it for a price less than $30. I am aware that this may well be impossible, but I've exhausted all other resources. Help me, Aski-Meta Filtari; you're my only hope.

I would like to totally rid myself of VHS tapes. But I have about 40 of them that I'd like to transfer onto DVDs before I trash them. After that, I will never use a VHS tape again. What's the best route to go in my situation? Buy a VHS-to-DVD converter? Pay to have this done?
Most of it is stuff I taped off of TV years ago. Episodes of TV shows that have never come out on DVD, etc. Is it legal for me to do the transfer? It's not stuff that's for sale. I assume that it was legal (or in some legal gray area) for me to tape the stuff in the first place, so is it legal for me to make backups? I have no plan to sell them to anyone else. The quality is horrible, anyway. But I want to save them before they totally disintegrate.
