The fates have conspired to give me a week off with a car to myself and no plans. I am starting out in Wenatchee, WA and need to be back in 7 days to catch a train home. Given my rough draft itinerary, where should I eat and what should I see while I'm out there? [more inside]

I am headed to Zion National Park to do some solo hiking over the 4th of July weekend. From what I understand it is going to be extremely hot and crowded. For anyone who has been there before, can you offer some tips on logistics, stuff to pack, recommended hikes, beating the heat, etc. I will be staying in Springdale. I would like to do The Narrows but will avoid Angel's Landing due to my trouble with heights. Any info you can provide that would make this awesome would be much appreciated.
We've been scouring the internet for cool routes and it's just not cutting it. There are a lot of routes that people suggest that have heavy traffic and boating. We're looking for something a little more remote or secluded. [more inside]
In late spring, I will be taking a road trip with some friends through the southwest. We'll stop at grocery stores to get a cooler and provisions, and we'd prefer not to eat entirely in restaurants, but that will have to happen sometimes. One of my friends is mostly vegan, definitely vegetarian, and I am somewhat skeptical of dining options in small rural towns. Where can we find decent food on our route? [more inside]
My partner and I are planning a cross-country trip from Austin, TX to Seattle, WA, during which we want to have several days-long backpacking trips. We originally wanted to do Zion, Black Canyon of Gunnison, Grand Tetons and Glacier, but aside from Black Canyon booking the other places seems difficult to impossible. Looking for advice on the likelihood of getting to do it in those parks in May, as well as alternate backpacking possibilities should these fail. [more inside]
After this question, we are headed to the Canyons in Park City for our first ski trip. Kids ( 5 and 7 ) and wife have never been skiing. Give me all your tips on how to make this a awesome trip. Kids and wife are enrolled in lessons. I realize they may not like it. Answers could include stuff about apparel, safety, logistics, etiquette, things to pack, things to do in Park City, etc. Help us have a awesome trip and get the most out of Park City.
Past answers have already given me tons of great ideas for the Best Roadtrip Ever™; now help me polish my itinerary to perfection. Bonus points for advice on enjoying the solo stretches of the trip. [more inside]
Thanks to all the help I got on this question I've decided on a two week trip from Las Vegas to Glacier National park. Our destinations are various parks in Utah, Yellowstone/Tetons and Glacier NP. Our focus is nature and history. I haven't mapped out our route and would like help with 1) must see things and 2) one or two cities/town that are interesting and fun. Traveling -> one 9 year old boy and 4 adults.
I am planning a two-week hiking trip primarily to Utah, with a stop at the Grand Canyon, in (likely) mid-April next year. I have library books galore, but it's all a bit overwhelming in these early stages of planning, and I'd love some insight from those who have been before. [more inside]
We would like to rent a place for a week-long family Christmas and are trying to decide on a location. We have three groups of people: two adults in Oakland, California; two adults and four children near Salt Lake City; and one adult in Michigan. The children range in age from two to eleven, and the place has to be driving distance from Salt Lake, as the Salt Lake group can't afford to fly six people. Plus we want to keep costs down as much as possible. Other considerations inside. [more inside]

Need to move my mother from SLC (Utah) to LA (CA). Don't want to risk driving her aging car on the highways in July for fear of a mechanical breakdown or worse. Moving company quoted us $900-1000 to add car to the moving experience. Uship.com finds quotes from many services who offer car transport for considerably less. Does anyone have any recommendations, particularly with car transport companies to trust (and others to avoid)? [more inside]
Going out to Salt Lake City for a conference next week and staying through the weekend to see the area. Current plan is just to stay an extra few nights in my current downtown hotel and explore from there but am now thinking about doing an Airbnb somewhere for those days instead. [more inside]
We (me, mrs. sexy, three kids ages 15, 19, 22) are flying into Vegas this July and want to explore nature to the east of there -- Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion as we've heard those places are amazing. We would like to camp there for a couple of nights, and we've done the car camping thing a lot as a family, but how do you do that when you've flown in and all you have are suitcases of clothes? I'd like to give a gift to someone who adores Utah and will be making his second trip there next year. Any suggestions for the best travel books or some kind of unusual service/gift certificate I could give him? He likes wide open spaces and adventurous travel off the grid.
Several times over the last 10 years a columnist for the Salt Lake Tribune has claimed that a representative in the Utah House voted down a bill outlawing bestiality, saying "Rep. Pignanelli just doesn't understand the pressures on the farm in rural Utah." Is there any truth to this claim? [more inside]
My wife I will be visiting Bryce Canyon in early June with our 2-year-old son. We want to do the Navajo/Queens Garden loop. Would this hike be safe/doable considering one of us will be (mostly) carrying our son in a pack? We are in decent physical shape, but online I'm seeing some hikers say it is an easy hike and others saying it is strenuous and very steep. We're also looking for suggestions for other good bang-for-your-buck hikes in Bryce, Zion, Grand Staircase/Escalante area that would be good for us with the little one. Thanks in advance!
Is there a store in Salt Lake City that sells Utahn USGS 7.5 minute topo maps that's open on Saturday? Or, alternatively, a place in Moab that's open on Sunday? For instance, does REI sell topo maps? We're visiting Utah from Vancouver Canada and we don't have enough time to have maps shipped from the USGS, but unfortunately the way things are timed we're going to be passing through SLC and Moab on the weekend. We'll need the maps by Monday morning, otherwise we'd hang around. Any help would be appreciated.
We are in Salt Lake City just for today. What are fun things that are open? What about Park City--worth a visit or is Sundance a shitshow? We have a car.

What is this plant (or weed) growing in my back yard? It has multiple, thick stems with tiny thorns, green leaves that turn light green/reddish as the plant gets bigger, and a big root system with roots that are woody and slightly rubbery. It does not have any tendrils or flowers and left to grow, it begins to resemble a small tree. [more inside]

We are new to Utah and planning a camping trip to the southern part of the state. We're trying to decide which parks/attractions to hit in our small time frame. Leaving tomorrow for Scottsdale. We are driving from Seattle, through Utah. We'll have at least one night in Zion, visit Bryce....and hopefully a night in Sedona. My partner and I are moving to Oregon at the end of the month from out of state (utah) and we are very poor. Our car's registration ended last month (July 2011). Since Oregon says we have to register our vehicle within 30 days of moving there, I want to wait till we get to Oregon to do our car's registration. We wont really doing any driving before the end of the month (we both walk to work and the grocery store), I can't see any problems with this, besides possibly getting a ticket on the drive to Oregon. Are we likely to run into problems registering our car in Oregon if our registration from Utah is expired? Thanks!
