[UK used car filter] I'm selling a car with some cosmetic but not-cheap-to-fix damage and would like advice on the best way to sell it. [more inside]
Friend is in Saudi Arabia. His car and title is here in Phoenix. He is asking for my help in selling his car. If I find a buyer, how do I transfer title to new buyer without him not being here? I have the title for his car but he has not signed it. He is not scheduled to return anytime soon. What do I do? Ship him the title and have him get a notary there in Saudi Arabia? Is there something else that the MVD in Maricopa county will accept for this sale to proceed? My google-fu is failing me in finding an answer. Thank you!
We're moving to Los Angeles, hooray! We live in Chicago and don't own a car. Do we buy a car here or in CA? Or somewhere else? [more inside]
I’m planning to buy either a used Air or a new MacBook, though I wish I could wait for the next update instead. The Air has been on "Don't Buy" status at MacRumors for months. But a MacBook with comparable performance could be $500 more including the port adapters I’d need. (Is it ok to buy those cheap, from third party manufacturers, and to daisy-chain them?) [more inside]
What is my moral responsibility when I sell someone a perfectly functional car that is explicitly "as-is" that then breaks down almost immediately after the sale is completed, when I legitimately had no inkling that there was any underlying problem. [more inside]
I have a second car. I know I can donate it or sell it or gift it. But can I rent it or lend it? I wouldn't mind making money from it before I let it go, but if that's not feasible, is it more or less so to find an altruistic purpose for it? Or should I just say goodbye?
My son and daughter-in-law have 3 high-quality new silk Persian rugs in great condition that each cost multiple tens of thousands of dollars. Photos here. They have asked me to help them sell them where they might be valued. Hence my appeal to the hive-mind for suggestions? [more inside]
Where do people go to buy and sell their junk these days? Is Craigslist really as dead as it seems? [more inside]
Where to cell >100 CDs rejected by Decluttr for either (1) not being in their database or (2) having a small bit of writing (my name, now crossed out) on both the CD and the insert? [more inside]
I've seen Swappa recommended here and am just sort of asking if people have had good results. Anecdata, I know, but the local buy/fix/sell iPhone store's prices are about double what I see on the site. On the other hand, a relative bought a phone from Swappa and had bad results and filled my ear with it, so I'm having a moment of hesitation. Still, I am strongly leaning towards buying from Swappa (frankly couldn't afford to buy at the store's prices) but if people routinely get bum phones from them, I'll look into other options.
My 2001 325i that I absolutely babied got totaled this weekend. I need a replacement. What should I get next? Details inside... [more inside]
If you only had $5000 for a used vehicle, would you buy a RAV4, CRV, or Lexus RX? [more inside]
I'm in my 30s and finally learning to drive. My wife drives, but doesn't own a car, and we think it might make sense to buy a cheap-ish vehicle for me to practice on and for occasional trips etc. We are thinking of getting something cheap, under $2K. My question is: what the heck do I look for? [more inside]
Similar to this question, but I am looking at a 2002 and a 2006 Prius. Both have similarly low mileage, but the 2006 is listed at ~$5000 more than the 2002. I would prefer the larger interior space and the newer car, but am not sure it's worth it. What else should I consider? [more inside]
Where can I buy this rug? It is no longer for sale from the manufacturer, and I've struck out on Craigslist. [more inside]
A car with lower miles that needed many repairs or a car with higher miles that has had one owner and no issues? [more inside]
Is it worth paying over Blue Book value for a car that was just purchased from a dealer? [more inside]
I've used an iPod Touch and prepaid feature phone for years, and I'm now looking to consolidate my devices into one. I'm hoping to get a used or refurbished iPhone, and looking for some advice as to where, and potentially, what to buy. [more inside]
Mr. Architeuthis and I are shopping for a gently used car, preferably a wagon. We are 5'10" and 6'2". We have 2 kids and will be using a car seat for at least another 2-3 years, and our kids are both 95th percentile for height. What can we buy that will leave more than 1 inch of clearance between seat and infant knee? Parameters: preferably under 15K US, must have AWD. [more inside]
I'm in the market for a new (to me) car. I've looked at old AskMes and googled, but still have a lot of questions on how to determine which car to buy and how best to buy it. Would greatly appreciate your help! [more inside]
Divers - why is it so difficult to sell used dive gear? And where/how is the best way to do so? [more inside]
I'm biting the bullet and switching to a MacBook Pro. I've found a good price for a second-hand one on Gumtree in the UK. What should I look out for when testing the machine before handing over the cash? [more inside]
We're going to drive to the Buffalo area to sell the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid mentioned in my last question, "How to sell our Ontario-registered never-imported American car". The car has 111,000 miles and is missing its front bumper cover due to a collision with a deer but is otherwise in good condition. [more inside]
I'd like to buy a used/"vintage" gem for an engagement ring. Looking at vintage rings on ebay and etsy, I have zero idea how to assess the "quality" of the stone, or how to know if it's real, or what. Is it possible for a lay person to do this? What should be my basic steps for assessing the rings or loose stones I see online? [more inside]
I am planning on buying a lightly used car in the next few months, so I’m starting to research what kind to buy. What make/models (and years) should I consider? [more inside]
The company I work for (located in New York City) owns an office building which we have recently renovated. All the art in all the hallways was replaced to match the new decor, and as a result we have approximately 100 "used" framed wall art photos - is there a way to sell these all at once to someone? [more inside]
I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions. [more inside]
I have a good, reliable car that costs (in my opinion) too much money. I am not currently making the payments on this car, but I will start doing so soon. I am thinking of selling the car and getting a cheap one - but my mother (who is currently making the payments) adamantly believes that this would be a terrible financial decision. I can't see how she could be right. [more inside]
I'm thinking of buying a used desktop. It's probably an entry-level+ system by gaming standards, but much better than the "any desktop will do" aisle at Best Buy—which is exactly the performance for price I want. How best to confirm that I'm getting a working version of the parts advertised in a short visit to a stranger's house? [more inside]
I've just learned to ride a bike for the first time as an adult, and now I'm trying to buy one. Catch: I know nothing about them. [more inside]
I have a 2006 women's Schwinn Voyageur GS hybrid/comfort bicycle that has been gathering dust in my living room for the last six years. Is this even worth bothering trying to sell on Craigslist, or should I just donate it to the local bike rescue? [more inside]
If all goes well, I'll have the pre-purchase inspection on this used car tomorrow, and see if I can close a deal to buy it. Then what? I need help with the order of all the paperwork and steps. Complication: I'm in MA, the owner is in CA, and the car is registered and located with the seller's relative in NH. [more inside]
What do I need to know about buying a used windsurfing set-up? What pieces are essential and how do I know if they are in good condition? [more inside]
Good maintenance/car history/reliability/price versus everything else [more inside]
I'm in the market for a used car, and I know that it's bad news when a car isn't driven regularly. I've found one that's otherwise good for me. I don't know how little driving is too little, whether the kinds of problems that result could be checked by a mechanic's pre-purchase inspection, and whether my own tough driving patterns make any difference. [more inside]
Used car filter: after a decade without owning a car, I'd like to get back into the game. I'd prefer to spend $5k or less. I understand this means older cars/higher miles. I find myself drawn to early 2000s VW Golfs/GTIs, late-90s BMW 300 series, '90s Saabs, early '00s Volvos. Are any of these types going to be substantially more reliable or cheaper to maintain than others? [more inside]
Looking at 2002 Chevy 2500 HD 4x4 Diesel, 220,000 miles. I'm told truck diesel engines like this last 500,000 miles. I'm new to diesel and buying a truck with that much mileage on it. What warning signs should I be looking for with either the engine or the chassis? [more inside]
I have a couple of nice ($5-10k) watches I got new. I love this kind of stuff, and would like to expand my collection, but it's really hard to justify laying down that kind of cash on a regular basis. So I'm considering buying some used watches. However, I'm really nervous about getting ripped off if I buy used (either online or from a local dealer who I don't have a track record with). If you buy nice watches used, where do you go, and how do you know you're getting a quality watch at a fair price?
I am, unfortunately, in the market for a (used) car. I know nothing about cars. I need a car for upcoming PhD research travel to inaccessible places, but, being a PhD student, have very little money. I need help figuring out: a cheap but reliable car model, a price bracket to spend that will have me driving something that won't literally fall apart on the road, what my deal-breakers should be, and a game plan on where and how to actually purchase a used car. Help? [more inside]
I would like to purchase a beater bicycle. I will use it to go several miles along a maintained bike path to get to a subway station. My ideal scenario: I travel to a location where there are several shit bicycles. I select one of the shit bicycles, I hand someone a smallish amount of money, and I stop thinking about purchasing a bicycle. I don't care if it is a pink bicycle covered in swastikas provided that it works and is reasonably priced. Let's make this happen!
I have a pretty good 2006 Felt S 22 triathlon bike. I'd like to get a newer, faster, better bike. I have time (up to a year?) to get a used triathlon bike. Craigslist isn't great in my area, and eBay doesn't seem to have great deals. Where should I be looking to get a good deal on a used high end tri-bike? (I'm willing to spend up to about $2500) Also any tips on buying the bike, or what I should be looking for in technological advances since 2004? Thanks. (If it matters, I use a 52cm bike, I am 175 cm tall and I'm in Columbus Ohio)
Looking for more options than just dealership financing [more inside]
I'm considering purchasing a used motorcycle from a Craigslist seller (in Virginia/Washington DC). There is a lien on the title which he is to pay off after purchase. Am I being naive? [more inside]
According to my trusted mechanic, the transmission on my aged buggy is shot (I haven't had 3rd gear for a while, and now the car has begun to have trouble getting into 2nd and 4th) and the car is not worth the cost of fixing it. Fair enough--except that I literally don't have time to buy another (used) one right now. Things will calm down slightly in the second week of May, but not until then. And while I'm aware of other options (the bus, taxi/car services), I don't have the time and money to rely exclusively on those until my schedule eases up. Nor can I afford to rent a car until then. So I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a short-term option that I might be overlooking, up to and including a Magic Car Fairy. Alternatively, if anyone has experience driving a car with this kind of issue and can tell me how safe (or un-) it is, I'd appreciate that input.
I'm looking to buy a car in southwest michigan. I trust "my" mechanic in my town, but there's few cars here. Other towns, eg Grand Rapids and Lansing, have great cars, but I don't know any mechanics in those towns. By what logical process should I choose a mechanic to take potential cars to? [more inside]
My iPhone was stolen and I need to purchase a new one. I am considering saving myself the hassle of a craigslist interaction by purchasing a used one through an Amazon retailer. Has anyone done this? Would you recommend it? Anything I should look for specifically besides carrier compatibility etc.?
So I just started a new job and need a car soon. I've never bought one before, and while I've had advice from friends I want to widen my information sources a bit. Complications, budget and other sundry details after the break... [more inside]
I would like to buy a used washer/dryer and thought I'd pick your collective brains. I've been in apartments with coin op laundry for so long the thought of buying a washer/dryer is daunting. I looked on craigslist and there are scads and scads of washers and dryers and the prices run from stoopid cheap to stoopid expensive. [more inside]
My wife's favorite hobby for after work is to go onto Ebay and bargain hunt for clothes. She has been doing this for years. She doesn't buy that much, she just enjoys searching. Last week, out of the blue she got an email from Ebay that her 12 year old account was being closed and there was nothing she can do. The reasoning was odd (something about a similar account blah blah) but that is besides the point. Anyway, I am looking alternatives websites she can go to and bargain hunt for clothes online. Etsy.com is the only similar thing I can think about.
I'd like to buy a used (or possibly new) reliable, easy to use mechanical (versus computerized) sewing machine available in Britain or the EU for very basic uses, mostly hemming, repairs, and making simple things like pillow covers, curtains, table clothes, etc., and I'd love some recommendations. I'll probably be looking mostly on eBay UK and Amazon UK. [more inside]
