gossip-averse liberal political news sources: all killer, no filler?

Hoping to find at least one ostensibly liberal news website that has not yet collapsed into a pit of Buzzfeed-ification or gossip column nonsense masquerading as current events. I don't want to read about the latest offensive off-the-cuff remark made by some random state representative or Joe the Plumber or Sarah Palin or any other totally irrelevant GOP-friendly media personality. I only want to read in-depth stories about U.S. politics with a liberal bent: candidates, issue positions, polls, all that fun stuff. Can you help? [more inside]

Road scholar

Let's say you have a kid - 10-15 years old, so maybe grades 5-10 - and you decide to pull them out of school for a year. During that time, you are going to drive around the United States with the goal of learning, in an authentic way, as much as possible about American history, culture, and geography. Where do you go, and what do you read? [more inside]

How do I import some sheets from Singapore to the United States?

There is only one website that sells a sheet set I really want, and it only ships to Singapore. I emailed them; they cannot get stuff shipped to the United States. There are a million websites that help people ship stuff from US websites to Singapore, but none I can find that ship stuff from Singapore to the United States. There has got to be a way for me to do this. How do I do this? [more inside]

Illness in the US, but magically, no healthcare!

I just returned from West Africa and have a number of symptoms consistent with malaria - or the flu. I have no healthcare, through circumstances beyond my control (I'll elaborate) until May 1. When is it worth it to go to the doctor to get tested? How can I try to keep this from being a pre-existing condition, given that it may be the recurrent form? [more inside]

calling all progressives! where's the next Russ Feingold?

I'm an extremely liberal Democrat who comes from a long line of extremely liberal Democrats, but I've become increasingly disillusioned with the national party apparatus over the past handful of years. Can you help me put together a list of progressive Democrat office-holders and up-and-coming candidates to buoy and inspire an otherwise devoted liberal's flagging enthusiasm? [more inside]

Books on US foreign policy

Please recommend your favorite readable books on United States foreign policy. I'm open to a broad range - biography/autobiography of key figures, analysis around a specific event, focus on specific forms of diplomacy, focus on specific issues - but I want something that is engaging and not too dense. Imagine you could pull it out of your bag during your subway commute. [more inside]

Occupation shifts over time

I'd like to visualize shifts in employment between occupations in the United States from the end of WWII to the present. Here is a (rather poor) example of the the sort of thing I have in mind. OES data seems like the obvious choice, but the BLS specifically cautions against using it. Is there better data available? I'm mostly interested in broad shifts due to technical change (i.e. the emergence of the software industry, the decline in manufacturing employment).

Seeking First-person Accounts of Poverty in the United States

I would like to continue reading stories told from the perspective (or about the perspective) of those living in poverty in the US. Books, documentaries, articles are all welcome.

Career in public health?

I'm currently a registered nurse in New Zealand. I'm about to start post-graduate study here in NZ with an eye towards a masters degree. I assumed I'd be working toward a masters in nursing (for obvious reasons) but I've always been quite keen on public health and I'm thinking of working towards an MPH. I have a school and course of study in mind already (my interests are cardiovascular health, population health, informatics, and epidemiology). Also thrown into the mix, I'm a citizen of the United States, but I completed all my university schooling in New Zealand. I might like to potentially move back to the States one day. What, if any, are my job prospects like in this instance? Any advice from current MPH students or graduates?

Can't make purchases from Itunes App Store - Chile and the US

I am from the US and have a bank account with Bank of America. I live in Chile and the billing address attached to my account is in Chile. My iPad was linked to an itunes account with the US app store. But, when I tried to make a purchase (free apps download fine,) I am told that I can't have a billing address outside the states. How did the Japanese public come to admire U.S. culture, post WWII?

Japan and the Japanese public are often portrayed as being admirers of the culture of the United States. But within living memory the two countries were involved in a brutal war, which culminated in conventional and nuclear bombings targeting Japan's citizenry and devastating their country. In Japan's case, how did a societal contempt sufficient to wage and sustain total war turn, in such a short time, into a societal affinity sufficient for some to embrace many parts of the culture of the nation that had dealt them destruction on such a massive scale? I'm looking for a quote from a founding father about leaving government

I remember reading something, somewhere from one of the founding fathers about the original intent of legislators to NOT be a political class. To serve a term or two and go home so that people from outside could contribute and people inside didn't get too jaded. Though maybe I'm adding a lot of subtext. Is there anything from any of the FF's on this that rings a bell? Do you have a quote or two?

How do the U.S. political parties work these days?

I'd like to learn more about how the Democratic and Republican parties function, concretely, at present. Specifically: how establishment forces (influential donors, party officials, incumbents) influence the rise of candidates (at any level), and how these candidates integrated into the parties activities. I'm particularly interested in the role of political consultants (in media, fundraising, messaging) - what dynamics are at play as they are hired by candidates, how do these consultants' careers develop, what pressures do they face from the establishment, and what role do they play in shaping the policy positions?
