Now that, through a previous exchange, I sorted out my Chromebook, I'm reading about installing Ubuntu on it. I can find how to do it but, really, I can't find why to do it. I love my Chromebook and I have no problems with it. But I am curious as to how Ubuntu could make it better. Any explanations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I'm medium-capable with computer stuff; not afraid of a command line, but not a lot more sophisticated than mkdir and mv commands. I've got an ECS LIVA box that I'd like to try putting a Plex server on. I've installed Ubuntu 14.04, and connected it to a 5TB external drive, but I'm getting a bit nervous. Is Plex on this setup within my skill range? [more inside]
Whenever I try to run any SDL games, I get the following error. Despite checking online, I haven't found any solutions to it. Unfortunately this means some of our favorite games have stopped working, and my son is showing signs of gamer angst. [more inside]

I am looking for a way to send one or two automated email reminders from a gmail account to people who are signed up to a rota. I am able to send emails in python using smtplib, but I find that they all go straight to junk. I've also tried ssmtp in Ubuntu, but I have the same problem. [more inside]

I need a moderately priced, durable MP3 player that I can dump selected tracks / podcasts from my Banshee library into for my commute. Ideally, I'd like to spend less than $100. Any advice will be appreciated - I've been trying for 6 months to get Linux and my iPod to play together reliably, and I'm throwing in the towel.
My netbook is running Ubuntu (11?). I set up hard drive encryption when I installed Ubuntu, and gave my hard drive the same password as my user account. Then I didn't use the netbook for several months and forgot the password. Help me make netbook go. [more inside]
Ubuntu 12.04 is suddenly unable to connect via two different routers. When the (correct) passwords are entered, it attempts to connect, but then brings up the pwd entry form again. This is a new problem, as of last Mon. [more inside]
I have a good friend with dystonia, which limits his physical dexterity greatly. He has a new Acer Aspire netbook, running Ubuntu 12.04LTS. His old machine ran Windows 7. The accessibility for keyboard in Ubuntu is pretty good, offering the same sort of sticky keys, and repetitive key blocking and so forth. The problem is with the trackpad. Under Win7, he can left-click once on the trackpad button, which then treats it the same as if he continued to hold the button down until the button is clicked again to release it. Ubuntu will not do this out of the box. [more inside]
Ubuntu touch preview does not use X11 for graphics. The repository for armhf contains virtually all apps available in desktop Ubuntu, but they cannot be run directly on the tablet (Nexus 10 in my case). Is there a way to run those using a virtual X-server, perhaps passing through local VNC to be displayed? I have ssh access to the device, so I can run commands normally.
Please help me figure out how to get my VPN to work with Linux - it claims to, but I can't make it. [more inside]
I am running Ubuntu 12.04 w/Gnome - I use proXPN for Windows machines, but have never been able to get it to establish a connection w/the Ubuntu laptop I have. I'm looking for recommendations for VPNs that work reliably with Linux where set-up is basic enough for a Linux novice to understand.
I'm stuck using an old no longer supported version of ubuntu (11.04) on my primary laptop because the video card is not supported by the newer distros. Is there anyway I can get updates for it or is there an alternate OS that will still support old Intel video? I've already run into snafus with ruby and firefox is no longer updating ( I can probably just switch to chrome). I don't want to spend to much time yak shaving because I would rather be getting stuff done.

About 5 minutes ago I put a CD into my computer and it won't read or eject. It's a Macbook purchased in late 2008 running Ubuntu 12.04. I've tried ejecting the cd using Disk Utility and get the following error message: "error ejecting: eject excited with exit code 1: eject unable to eject, last error: Inappropriate ioctl for device" Can anyone help?

Due to my work laptop dying, I installed the gui on my Ubuntu 11.10 server. No biggie except that it seems to have messed up the video mode. My LCD just displays an error. How can I get around this? [more inside]
Upgrading Ubuntu: I am planning to finally dist-upgrade my mythbuntu 10.10 box which has fallen out of official support. I probably will take 3 steps to get it up to 12.04 LTS, but this question is just about the first step. What happens during a dist-upgrade if I have a ppa-sourced package that is newer than the new distribution? [more inside]
Yesterday, my firefox install on ubuntu started misbehaving. The bookmarks toolbar only shows up if I remove it and and add it again. There are no URLs in Address bar and no URL display down where the status bar used to be. Several plugins have stopped working without being disabled. Sometimes tabs can't be closed. No session management and on and on. The problem seems to be some interaction of a ubuntu update and firefox not cooperating. After googling I have nothing and am at a complete loss for how to fix it. Where do people turn for support for ubuntu firefox problems that don't require them to be on either development team? I have recently become the defacto sysadmin for a number of Ubuntu machines, and it has become painfully obvious that I don't really know what I'm doing. Can you recommend resources for me to better understand how Linux works? Please note that I am not at all interested in this for its own sake, but only because I need to know this to be able to do the fun parts of my job. [more inside]
I have an Ubuntu server. It's a Dell PowerEdge with a PERC 6 RAID controller. I have searched the web, the AskMe mind, and asked a couple of local LTSP experts about a good, printed resource that will take me step by step through setting up an Ubuntu server and eight to ten clients. How do you change the appearance of the in-window chrome on gnome-terminal? Specifically, when you have multiple tabs open, there are a few extra pixels around the edge that I'd like to do away with. Advice and encouragement, please, on jumping the rest of the way into Linux. Several specific issues inside, but the gist is that I got fed up with Windows and started dual-booting Ubuntu 10.10 on several machines. Now I think I'm ready to make Ubuntu my permanent all-the-time OS. What are considerations and best practices I should consider? What am I not thinking of? [more inside]
I'm seeing "No space left on device" errors on a Ubuntu (standard LAMP stack) Virtual Private Server, to which I have root access via SSH. df -i reports no shortage of iNodes, but df -h reports Size = 9.5G, Used = 869M, Avail = 0, Use% = 100%. I'm not so good at math, but those numbers don't seem to add up. I've found no reports of such errors with similar disk space reports on Google, and my usual avenues of online support have not been helpful.
