LaTeX + pdf = employment fail? I am looking for a job and have been using LaTeX to generate my resume and cover-letter. At a recent job interview I was told that they weren't able to print my resume. It looked fine on their computer but when they printed it, it was as if most of the document had been whited-out: a couple of phrases appeared approximately where they should but, most of it was just missing. I need to help my friend upgrade from Intrepid Ibex to Jaunty Jackalope. I'd appreciate any tips or advice for doing this. What's the best backup tool to use, and how do I restore from the backup if things go wrong? I'm thinking something like Time Machine would be nice, but I can do command line stuff, too. Any other best practice tips for the upgrade itself? Thanks so much in advance.

So I have this growing movie collection. What I want is a file browser that lets me tag each movie (either my own tags, or metadata from the files). Basically something like labels in Gmail or tags in Flickr/Delicious etc. Ubuntu here. I've heard of Gnome Meta-Tracker, is there anything else that will help organize my collection?

There are currently 4 File Browsers open on my desktop, all displaying either the contents of my external hard drive or the folder where it's mounted (/media/). I didn't open them—they just showed up. This morning when I woke up there was 40+ File Browser windows open of the same. Another window just opened; it seems to occur at random intervals. I'm running Ubuntu Linux 8.10, wtf is causing this? [more inside]

I am used to Mac OS X and I really like the default fonts, the way anti aliasing works and the default theme as well. Now I am working with Ubuntu 8.10 on other machine, but it kind of frustrates me visually. I'd like to ask general tips on how could I make Ubuntu more visually appealing. I have found a couple of links about how to make fonts smoother. That improved a bit, bit still not there yet. I'd like to hear from you what font you use, themes, etc... So, what are the tricks you use to make your Ubuntu install beautiful?

I recently lost a raid array on a ubuntu 8.04 server forcing me to rebuild it from scratch and/or restore data from backup. (I have copies of /var, /etc, and /home) The problem is I can't seem to rebuild the server so that it works exactly the way it did before, this is killing me!! (fyi... I inherited this system). My specific problem seems to be with Samba. I'm looking for help in two different ways... help 1) either figure out how to restore this system with what I've got backed up. Or fix samba so it works. See details below: [more inside]

So i partitioned my pocket 320gig USB drive and installed the lastest ubuntu. My intent was to use it like a live CD to virus scan windows XP worksations (to avoid imaging). Odd thing though, I can not access any data on this drive when running WinXP. in windows, it tells me that the drive isn't formatted. I checked the drive and see the Ubuntu partition, the original partition and a small 1gig partition I assume was created during the Ubuntu install. Grub loads when I restart the machine and boot from USB and Ubuntu runs fine. Is my data irrevocably lost? I was thinking of deleting the MBR, but I figure that'd just make the drive useless. ideas?
