I have a good friend with dystonia, which limits his physical dexterity greatly. He has a new Acer Aspire netbook, running Ubuntu 12.04LTS. His old machine ran Windows 7. The accessibility for keyboard in Ubuntu is pretty good, offering the same sort of sticky keys, and repetitive key blocking and so forth. The problem is with the trackpad. Under Win7, he can left-click once on the trackpad button, which then treats it the same as if he continued to hold the button down until the button is clicked again to release it. Ubuntu will not do this out of the box. [more inside]

Ubuntu touch preview does not use X11 for graphics. The repository for armhf contains virtually all apps available in desktop Ubuntu, but they cannot be run directly on the tablet (Nexus 10 in my case).
Is there a way to run those using a virtual X-server, perhaps passing through local VNC to be displayed? I have ssh access to the device, so I can run commands normally.

I'm trying to partition the hard drive on my old mac (model 4,1 running OS X 10.5.8) so I can dual boot Ubuntu. The problem is that when I go to Disk Utility and and select to partition the drive I get an error saying that the partition failed because there's no space left on the device, even though I have lots of space. This happens no matter how small I make the partition. [more inside]

Long story short- I'm trying to make a go of it with an Acer C7 Chromebook as my main computer. I installed ChrUbuntu, and this is my first foray into the world of Linux. I like it so far, but it does beg the question of what to do with backing-up/restoring my iPhone 4s and iPad (original). Pretty soon I'm going to want to unlock my iPhone so I can switch to a prepaid plan, and I understand you need iTunes for that. Is there a Linux workaround that anyone knows about?

I have a software RAID5 array in Ubuntu. According to the SMART status, all the devices are okay (one has "a few bad sectors," but the health is green). I have 5 drives, but I can't get the raid to assemble! I'm about to try raid create as outlined here
but it looks risky and I was hoping to see if there's something simple I'm missing. [more inside]

I have an Acer laptop with an i3 chip and the standard amount of RAM, probably 4GB that I bought in 2011. Just over a year after I bought it, and just weeks after the end of warranty, the hard drive died.
I'm wondering how hard it would be to buy a new hard drive and install Ubuntu or something like that. Is it possible?
If so, how much of a pain is it to set up drivers? Would I have to manually install drivers for nearly everything (USB ports, wireless receiver, etc)?

I'm stuck using an old no longer supported version of ubuntu (11.04) on my primary laptop because the video card is not supported by the newer distros. Is there anyway I can get updates for it or is there an alternate OS that will still support old Intel video? I've already run into snafus with ruby and firefox is no longer updating ( I can probably just switch to chrome). I don't want to spend to much time yak shaving because I would rather be getting stuff done.

I recently set up my old late-2007 Macbook Pro to dual boot OS X and Ubuntu. I'm very new to Ubuntu, and while mucking around I think I seriously screwed something up with my graphics card. Is there any way to fix it? Despite the problems these older Macbook Pros have with graphics cards, I am almost certain it is not hardware-related. [more inside]

That means I need to accurately type in a bunch of fiddly deliberately-hard-to-memorize characters, which only show up as asterisks, TWICE. Yesterday, my firefox install on ubuntu started misbehaving. The bookmarks toolbar only shows up if I remove it and and add it again. There are no URLs in Address bar and no URL display down where the status bar used to be. Several plugins have stopped working without being disabled. Sometimes tabs can't be closed. No session management and on and on. The problem seems to be some interaction of a ubuntu update and firefox not cooperating. After googling I have nothing and am at a complete loss for how to fix it. Where do people turn for support for ubuntu firefox problems that don't require them to be on either development team? I run a couple of django-based websites/webapps. What OS should I use for my VPS? The most important thing is security and easy installation of packages (including dependencies). I also prefer a system that is easy to maintain. Security is more important, but if all else is equal I would specifically love something with easy to make init-scripts. I know I can install third party packages to do just about anything, but I prefer a batteries-included approach if it exists. [more inside]
