I recently upgraded my main use laptop, replacing an HP Pavillion G4 that had a dead battery. The HP had lost much functionality as a laptop because it couldn't run for more than 10 minutes without being plugged in. I want to use the HP as a secondary workstation for Google Docs, reading .PDFs, and browsing the web. I have two main questions about this: what's a good OS to reformat onto the system to make this happen, and is the dead battery going to get in the way of it being a serviceable low profile desktop? I accidentally added a line of source for Utopic to sources.list. And later my system can't get into GUI. While trying to fix the problem I accidentally typed in command sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade. So tragedy happened: my system was upgraded to 14.10 utopic daily built! which I don't want! what's worse, becuase it was upgrading from 12.10 to 14.10, a lot of dependency can't resolve, and many services stopped working. The worst thing is, I still can't get into GUI. What should I do for this circurmstance? I'm a newbie in Linux/Unix. Thank you very much!!!
I've got a VPS. If I set up a VPN connection from it to a VPN provider in NL, everything goes through the VPN, but that means I can't SSH to the machine anymore. How do I set this up such that the VPS is listening at its regular IP on SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS, but everything else goes through the VPN? [more inside]

I have a portable drive w/an encrypted partition that I cannot get to mount on a laptop running Ubuntu 12.04. It is not visible to Disk Utility, either. Can anyone walk me through accessing its contents?
I need a moderately priced, durable MP3 player that I can dump selected tracks / podcasts from my Banshee library into for my commute. Ideally, I'd like to spend less than $100. Any advice will be appreciated - I've been trying for 6 months to get Linux and my iPod to play together reliably, and I'm throwing in the towel.
I have an ubuntu powered fileserver that I primarily use as a media server these days. There are many files on the machine that (for various reasons) I no longer have a license to play.* What is the best way to scan through all the songs in my library (about 30k) and filter out those that will not play given that they do not all have an exclusive filetype? *Example: a song that was bought by a roommate with a license shared through iTunes that is no longer shared.
My Comcast feed and the MLB.com audio feed are about 30 seconds off. Unfortunately, the Comcast video is running 30 seconds behind the MLB.com audio. When I had DirecTV the audio was always about 1 minute behind, so it was easy to simply pause the TV until the audio caught up, then watch it off the DVR on a 1 minute delay synched to the audio feed. How can I achieve the same result pausing the audio stream via MLB.com? Linux solutions are best as my laptop runs the latest Ubuntu LTS. Android ok too if there is an app that does this that I haven't found. Please help, I just can't listen to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver for another game, let alone the entire World Series.
I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, have all of my music on a portable hard drive, and ideally want to dump some of it onto an iPod. Is there a media player that will let me do this relatively painlessly? [more inside]
My netbook is running Ubuntu (11?). I set up hard drive encryption when I installed Ubuntu, and gave my hard drive the same password as my user account. Then I didn't use the netbook for several months and forgot the password. Help me make netbook go. [more inside]
Ubuntu 12.04 is suddenly unable to connect via two different routers. When the (correct) passwords are entered, it attempts to connect, but then brings up the pwd entry form again. This is a new problem, as of last Mon. [more inside]

Motivated by a combination of curiosity and laziness, I want to gain root privileges on an Ubuntu 10.04 machine (which belongs to me). I'm pretty sure I failed to apply any security updates, so hopefully there are some unpatched holes. I have an account which I can log in to, but I have forgotten my password so I can no longer sudo. It's not easy to physically access the machine, so I can't boot to single user mode. I have found sites which provide exploit code, but the exploits seem to be crippled in a highly responsible way. Where are the non-crippled versions?
I'm running the latest LTS version of Ubuntu on my hosting provider's cloud VPS service. I recently noticed a series of weird, spammy looking messages in my server's mail.log file. Tech support at my hosting provider says it does not appear to be compromised; are they wrong? [more inside]

I have a good friend with dystonia, which limits his physical dexterity greatly. He has a new Acer Aspire netbook, running Ubuntu 12.04LTS. His old machine ran Windows 7. The accessibility for keyboard in Ubuntu is pretty good, offering the same sort of sticky keys, and repetitive key blocking and so forth. The problem is with the trackpad. Under Win7, he can left-click once on the trackpad button, which then treats it the same as if he continued to hold the button down until the button is clicked again to release it. Ubuntu will not do this out of the box. [more inside]
Ubuntu touch preview does not use X11 for graphics. The repository for armhf contains virtually all apps available in desktop Ubuntu, but they cannot be run directly on the tablet (Nexus 10 in my case). Is there a way to run those using a virtual X-server, perhaps passing through local VNC to be displayed? I have ssh access to the device, so I can run commands normally.
I'm trying to partition the hard drive on my old mac (model 4,1 running OS X 10.5.8) so I can dual boot Ubuntu. The problem is that when I go to Disk Utility and and select to partition the drive I get an error saying that the partition failed because there's no space left on the device, even though I have lots of space. This happens no matter how small I make the partition. [more inside]
Is there an application that runs on iOS, or that runs on Ubuntu and has an iOS client, that will allow me to manage (as oppose to merely play) my digital music collection? I need to be able to import new files I have ripped, edit tags, and edit file/folder structure from my iPad due to carpal tunnel syndrome. [more inside]
Long story short- I'm trying to make a go of it with an Acer C7 Chromebook as my main computer. I installed ChrUbuntu, and this is my first foray into the world of Linux. I like it so far, but it does beg the question of what to do with backing-up/restoring my iPhone 4s and iPad (original). Pretty soon I'm going to want to unlock my iPhone so I can switch to a prepaid plan, and I understand you need iTunes for that. Is there a Linux workaround that anyone knows about?

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 w/Gnome - I use proXPN for Windows machines, but have never been able to get it to establish a connection w/the Ubuntu laptop I have. I'm looking for recommendations for VPNs that work reliably with Linux where set-up is basic enough for a Linux novice to understand.
I have a software RAID5 array in Ubuntu. According to the SMART status, all the devices are okay (one has "a few bad sectors," but the health is green). I have 5 drives, but I can't get the raid to assemble! I'm about to try raid create as outlined here but it looks risky and I was hoping to see if there's something simple I'm missing. [more inside]
I have an Acer laptop with an i3 chip and the standard amount of RAM, probably 4GB that I bought in 2011. Just over a year after I bought it, and just weeks after the end of warranty, the hard drive died. I'm wondering how hard it would be to buy a new hard drive and install Ubuntu or something like that. Is it possible? If so, how much of a pain is it to set up drivers? Would I have to manually install drivers for nearly everything (USB ports, wireless receiver, etc)?
I'm stuck using an old no longer supported version of ubuntu (11.04) on my primary laptop because the video card is not supported by the newer distros. Is there anyway I can get updates for it or is there an alternate OS that will still support old Intel video? I've already run into snafus with ruby and firefox is no longer updating ( I can probably just switch to chrome). I don't want to spend to much time yak shaving because I would rather be getting stuff done.

I'm trying to change my PayPal password. Normally I would copy-paste the new password in from KeepPass (or gedit), but PayPal disables copy-paste. That means I need to accurately type in a bunch of fiddly deliberately-hard-to-memorize characters, which only show up as asterisks, TWICE. Which apparently I am incapable of doing, whereupon PayPal kicks me out for two hours before letting me try again. Please help me figure out a workaround to solve this stupid problem. [more inside]

Upgrading Ubuntu: I am planning to finally dist-upgrade my mythbuntu 10.10 box which has fallen out of official support. What happens during a dist-upgrade if I have a ppa-sourced package that is newer than the new distribution? [more inside]
Yesterday, my firefox install on ubuntu started misbehaving. The bookmarks toolbar only shows up if I remove it and and add it again. There are no URLs in Address bar and no URL display down where the status bar used to be. Several plugins have stopped working without being disabled. Sometimes tabs can't be closed. No session management and on and on. The problem seems to be some interaction of a ubuntu update and firefox not cooperating. After googling I have nothing and am at a complete loss for how to fix it. Where do people turn for support for ubuntu firefox problems that don't require them to be on either development team?
