Finally spilled coffee on my 6-year-old MacBook Pro, borking the keyboard. It still boots up seemingly fine, but the hard drive is encrypted with a 40+ character password and I can't enter the password due to borked keyboard. I tried booting it up with a USB PC keyboard attached, but the laptop didn't recognize it. The problem is not the USB, since it will recognize a USB mouse. Is there a way to bring up an onscreen keyboard? Or another solution I'm not seeing?
I need to get a Windows 7 machine to recognize USB 2.0 devices, which it currently seems unable to do - they don't show up in the file menu or the device manager. Is there a relatively simple way to do this that I'm missing?
I have an iMac where the internal USB controller has gone flakey. It corrupts photos from SD cards, and just recently seems to have messed up my backup drive (also USB). The repair place is suggesting it will cost $800 to replace the logic board (parts + labor). Since everything else works well, I'd like to salvage the machine. [more inside]
While I was working on a document on a flash drive, Word told me I couldn't save the file to the location I had opened it from, a USB drive. [more inside]

My wife's UP band quit working. When she called tech support, they told her that they had found that some of the devices would quit accepting a charge from the plug-in, and only accept a charge via the computer. She chuckled, but tried charging from the computer and it worked. Can anyone explain to me what's going on here?
I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (GT-19195/ Android 4.2.2.) with a Samsung USB/power cable that until two days ago was able to connect with my laptop (Windows 7) over USB. Now however, after a firmware update, the computer no longer sees my phone nor does the phone see the computer. What's going on and how can I resolve it? [more inside]
I am looking for an external, portable DVD drive that plugs into a TV (via USB would be most convenient) and functions like a standard DVD player, while also connecting to a laptop to play CDs/install software. I can only envisage using the drive to watch DVDs on my TV, rip CDs and install software, so the ability to write to disk is not important. [more inside]
I have a laptop (Toshiba A105 S4344) with a windows xp install and a bootable USB clip with Win7 on it. I want to put Windows 7 on the laptop. If I take the hard drive out then the USB clip boots fine (but has no hard drive to install windows on). If I put the hard drive in then it runs windows off the HD even though USB boot is ahead of it in the BIOS startup order (and when I put a blank hard drive in then it complained it couldn't find the windows startup files). And when I try and insert the HD after loading Win7 off the USB, the installer can't see the hard drive. I've checked the BIOS and there aren't any secure boot/UEFI shenanigans going on. I will probably end up burning the win7 install onto a dvd, but does anyone know why the Toshiba would be overriding the boot order?
OK, this is odd: I recently bought (online) a little (portable/spare) USB Mouse (fitted with a spring-loaded, self-retracting cable-tidier). Fine. The mouse arrived today, along with a Yellow, Plasticised-wire (pipe-cleaner type thing), which has a cute duck face at the end of it, and a strange forked-tail. No other explanation. (Easter, perhaps?!), but I suspect it's some kind of mouse cradle to hang off a laptop... I don't get how this might be used, but wondered if anyone here could explain what it was / it's proper usage to me. Ta
The usb just stopped working on my Asus zenbook UX32VD laptop, running windows 8.1. Device manager shows no problems with usb (or any devices), and I have tried plugging in several different usb devices (my mouse, flash drives) to check. The built-in touchpad still works. Can anyone suggest how I might fix it, or what has happened? Thanks. [more inside]

We use a multi-port USB wall charger to charge our various devices. I'm looking for information evaluating the pros and cons of leaving said charger plugged in with associated USB cables, versus unplugging the unit from the wall when not in use. Specifically I'm looking for info on the following:
- any known power drain of leaving it plugged in but not charging any devices (significant? insignificant?)
- risks (or conversely no risk) of fire from leaving them plugged in when not charging devices

“one of the USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it”
I'm getting the following message: “one of the USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it” I post the message not because it is informative about the problem but because it's the recurring symptom. It occurs sometimes when I plug in a device, but even more often on devices that have been connected for some time. If I ignore it, the device might even start working again. (Most annoying are the message that tell me I have to reformat the device as I am afraid the cat will walk by and click on OK and wipe out my data.) The most "interesting" analysis online suggested that some kind of timeout for a device that hasn't been used in "a while" tells the system to "renew" which fails and results in the message. This may even be true, but who knows? [more inside]

USB hub for Macbook Air - can you recommend one? I just need something I can plug the usual array of peripherals into: iPod, iPad, SuperDrive, camera, external keyboard, mouse, printer, etc. (not necessarily all at once). I don't think I need anything fancy like extra hard drive storage built in, but open to all ideas. Thanks.

I have two Western Digital My Books (WD5000H) that were being used to consolidate files between two XP SP3 systems. Both of them stopped working at the same time. I use USBDeview on one of the computers that creates a record of every USB device that has been in my system. This showed two separate installs of the WD5000H drivers, plus another install of another unidentifiable WD driver. After the WD drives stopped working, they appeared in a different location as two separate Initio Default Controllers. These drives did not show up in either Explorer, Device Manager or in XP Computer Management panel. An older Iomega external drive and flash drives readily mount. [more inside]

It appears a virus has disabled my USB ports. I get the BSOD but can get to the Windows Recovery Console. I can see the USB ports in BIOS so how can I enable them? Bigger question is how to backup files from my hard drive while my PC is in this condition since it is not recognizing the USB?
Is there any way I can connect my External USB hard drive to my PS3 non-wirelessly while still sharing it wirelessly with other devices (iPad, iPod and other PCs in my house) using an Airport Extreme and a 4 port USB hub? I have a gut feeling that there must be a way to do this but I can't actually work out a real world way to do this. I accept I may potentially need to buy a new cable or two but I can live with that. Any ideas? [more inside]

I do occasional audio recording with GarageBand. I just recently upgraded from a G4 tower to an Intel iMac w/Snow Leopard. I settled for analog audio in through the mic input on the G4 but I think I want to step up to digital input. I have an analog mixer, tube preamps, effects pedals, etc. so I don't need to have them in the audio interface. Midi I/O would also be nice but not necessary. What are my choices in a basic 2-channel Firewire(800)/USB(2.0) audio interface?
