I can't for the life of me find a picture of a particular road sign, which I consistently misunderstood as a child. It's a traffic sign in North America that I saw many times as a kid but almost never any more. It was a yellow-orange sign with a "no" symbol and some random-looking detritus behind it, which I later understood to be a crumpled can. Probably a "no littering" sign, but a search on that or like terms seems to turn up nothing! A pretty silly question, I know!
I ask partly because when I was a kid, I thought the item behind the "no" sign was a mouser from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I'm relocating to the US (from the UK) in a couple of weeks and having concerns about health insurance. My husband's employer covers health insurance for him, but to cover me as well we must take out the 'family policy' for $500 per month (if we had 4 kids this would be a great deal, but apparently it's the same price for the whole 'family' even if that's just me. This seems crazy to me, not sure if it is normal!). Is my alternative plan crazy? Health insurance companies confuse and scare me! [more inside]

A few months ago I read about French-Canadian immigration into the U.S. from the 1840s to 1930s. Evidently, some of these immigrants established "Little Canadas." I'd like to learn more about them. [more inside]

My first trip to the US is coming up; having been brought up with American films and American TV shows, I am compiling a list of all the things we just don't have in the UK (mostly food) to try. Only my list isn't too long at the moment. Can any MeFites help? [more inside]

Hi there, My company is transferring me to London at the end of the month and I haven’t had much time to do some essential research. Part of the problem is I don’t even know the right questions to ask, or the right places to go on the web to find the info I need.
Here are a few things that I’d need to know in order to get me started, if anyone is so inclined to lend their knowledge: Apartment, bank, mobile phone, international calls, location, public transit, exemption from US taxes, tying up loose ends in the US. Anything else I may be missing? [more inside]

In the middle of a great obligatory family tour, we have 3-4 days where we can go off and do something fun somewhere in America. Somewhere not too far away from Philadelphia would be good. We were thinking NYC, but is there anyway to do this on a SERIOUS budget? And if not, where else should we go? Criteria within. [more inside]

I have jumped on an opportunity to take a vacation on the sunny beaches of Australia (insert mixup of seasons joke here). I am leaving in three weeks, and staying for six. However, I have run into a problem: my American passport expires two weeks before I return (though after I leave). [more inside]
