Through surprisingly painless saving I find that I have £5000. For those not in the UK, the Bank of England has dropped its interest rate yet again so leaving it where it currently lives in a savings account seems like a lost opportunity (I just made £0.99 last month on interest. Woopidy doo.) I googled around for some ideas and found this, which is hilarious because that's me 7 years ago and things have changed since then. So what should I do with £5k now? [more inside]
[UK finance filter] I'm terrible with money and come from a long line of people terrible with money. I have a colleague who the is the exact opposite, and today she told me something regarding our pension that has me wondering if I should be doing what she's doing. Difficulty filter: we're civil servants and have pretty good pensions under the Local Government Pension Scheme. [more inside]
My parents are about to inherit a reasonable amount of money. They want to give my brother and I a lump sum of around £20000 each. If they just transfer the money to us what happens about tax? Is there a way to minimise the amount of tax to be paid? You are not my solicitor or financial advisor etc etc. I'll take advice but would like an understanding before I do. Thanks!
About a month ago, a British company hired me to work 25+ hours a week for three months, with the possibility to go full-time after that if my coworker and I land a certain number of clients. (We're opening its New York office.) Payment is a clusterfuck. [more inside]

Hi all, So my UK Lloyds regular bank account was suspended while I was in the USA and now they want me to show up in a local branch. I have spent three days on the phone explaining to them that I cannot because I am in the USA at the moment. They insist that I do and until then all my funds are frozen! Nightmare! It looks like I will have to fly home just to show my face at the branch so I can access my funds. Anyone had anything like this? Do I really have to fly back to the UK just to ID myself? Thank you!
I have between 80K and 100K euros in a savings account in the Netherlands. If I need to transfer this to the UK (to, say, buy property), what is the best way to do this? I am a US citizen, current EU resident, possible near-future UK resident.

Hi. I live in the UK and have a 3 month old baby boy. I have just started saving into a child trust fund but am trying to figure out if this is the best way to save some money for his future. I would like to generate a lump of cash for him when he is 16-18 (for Uni or whatever needs paying for then), would prefer to do it ethically, and am not sure what the best value way of doing this is. More details available if needed but gotta go ... he's waking up! Thanks in advance!!!

My British employer overpaid me back in June 2008 to the tune of £1k. I pointed this out at the time, but never heard from anyone. Now it's December, and they want the money back. However, I've heard that I can contest this, on the grounds that the employer made a mistake, and that it's illegal to force employees to rectify companies' mistakes. Is this true? And what legalese can I quote? :)

The UK based company I have been working for is going under (I am in the US... I was hired as their Los Angeles based Art Director last November.) They never got the US corporation together so I was always payed as a contractor, month to month, for which I had to invoice them, always with the promise that as soon as they got the US corporation established I would get my pay as a salary with benefits like health insurance. Like many UK people, I earn some money in dollars: Adsense and Cafepress mostly. Whilst the exchange rate is poor, it would make a sense to leave this money in the US and only collect, as and when the rate changes significantly in my favour. UKSharesFilter: Some of my relatives have had a small selection of the shares in an inherited portfolio disappear over time from their online tracker, so my question is what has happened to the following stocks: CHB.L; GAA.L; MFBUEUGI.L and MFBUTRU.L, and should they have received any notification, documents or even cheques, (and what can be done about finding out more)? (I should clarify that they still have the certificates and haven't sold, traded or otherwise physically disposed of them, it's the listing themselves that now come up as 'No Such Symbol' on the internet listing of the portfolio).
