Expats living in London, renting the ground floor flat of a house. We don't have much in the way of high-value possessions aside from laptops, TV, bike, clothing, but we should probably get them covered. Please recommend a good policy or insurance company. [more inside]
Tomorrow, I'm off to the UK to sit in the British Library and read bad religious novels by authors you've never heard of! But when I'm not doing that, I may need to eat occasionally, lest the lack of nutrition make me fall asleep over triple-deckers by Mme. de Genlis. I'm staying in the Highgate area, relatively close to the cemetery. Any recommendations for good but not luxurious fare? Most cuisines are fine (Indian, Thai, Chinese, etc.).
Hello! I've got a second (and final) round of interviews for a content position within a major international bank in London. In this one, they'll be looking at the "cultural fit". Do you have any pointers on what they mean by that? What kind of "standard" interview questions should I prep for? Thanks for your help!
Am I correct in thinking that our landlord is required to give us 2 months' notice if they want us to leave the flat we are renting under a (now) periodic tenancy? I'm in London. [more inside]

Let's say I, a California software engineer and journalist, wanted to find an employer who would sponsor me to work in London. I've read a little about the work visa situation and various recent restrictions closing various avenues. Assuming the odds are probably pretty bad against succeeding, how might one try for this anyway? [more inside]
I'll be in London for a party & wedding over two weekends, and need ideas for domestic travel during the week in between, and the few days after. Hi - outer glass shattered on our oven door. Google suggests this does sometimes happen without provocation (oven is approx 7yrs old). Housing contract (London, UK) stipulates tenant responsible for 'broken glass' but I presume this refers to windows. Letting agents got quote of £220 for new door panel. New oven costs £295 and they prefer to do this. Ask I contribute 40% (£120). Is this a fair deal - should I negotiate lower? Thanks!
My small business needs an independent 3rd party to keep a weather eye on us and ensure we stop slacking. Where should I go looking to find someone experienced who could give us 2 hours of their time every month for next-to-do nothing? [more inside]

My job is transferring me from Chicago to London in the spring. I've certainly got a lot to figure out between now and then (much of which this forum has already been a big help with), but one specific question I have involves the purchase of a new computer. My current MacBook is definitely due to be replaced -- it's six years old, so move or not, I was planning on getting one sometime this year. Does it make more sense to buy one before the move or after? [more inside]

I'd like to work in London but I have no idea where to start! I'm a British citizen, age 30, but I've grown up in Australia. I'm looking for any kind of work that pays the bills. Policy work would be especially nice (I have some experience there) but temping/office jobs would be fine too. Can you recommend me some agencies and websites where I can start, and also any other hints and tips for first-timers to the London/UK job market! Thank you!

UK Art Supply filter: I'm an artist in New York, ordering supplies for a project that I will be doing in London next week. I'm trying to order online from UK-based websites as much as possible and have the supplies delivered to the work site, rather than shipping from the US. There are a few things that I'm having a hard time finding... particularly certain kinds of tape. [more inside]

UK (and especially London) folks, where should a returning US labor union staffer work in the UK? I’ll be returning to London (location non-negotiable) early next year after almost ten years in the US. I left the UK soon after I graduated (I’ve never held a career job there), and I’ve worked as a labor union staffer in the US, working my way up to positions with a good deal of strategic and management responsibility, but I'm absolutely open to a change... In a few days I will be staying with friend's family in western France, at a house they own. I will be in the UK the next few days. Normally I would bring wine or chocolates as a thank you for the accommodation, but France does these much better and cheaper than the UK (I am told). I am Canadian. What could I bring that would still be a great gift, that I could find in London? It should be something like food or drink, and something of benefit to people on vacation. Price about $50. The friends I am visiting are French/Canadian and appreciate quality/luxury

What should I be doing now to make sure I receive adequate compensation and the driver is dealt with appropriately?
