Can someone with a copy of the New York Times Style Guide tell me what it says about the preferred nomenclature for the country that calls itself "The United Kingdom"? They seem to use "England" as a synonym for the UK (e.g.), which most Britons consider incorrect. I'm interested to learn if this usage is justified in the Style Guide or is it just following standard usage in the US, which is rather casual about the distinction. Bonus points if you can tell me what the AP Style Guide (or any other American usage guide) says. [more inside]

I've got a great new suede laptop bag, which I managed to get very very dirty last night (long story). Where should I go to get it cleaned? Dry cleaners around where I live say they don't do bags, and searching the yellow pages has proved fruitless.

So, I've agreed to drive a group of people to Longleat Safari Park this weekend. It's been in the diary for months, but the weather forecast is not good. If you've been to Longleat before - is the bad weather going to spoil the trip? should we reschedule?

In the US, the first syllable of "privacy" rhymes with "eye." In the UK, it rhymes with "give." So why, when listening to an audiobook, did I hear a British reader (with a standard British dialect) pronounce it the American way? Was the reader just being weird, or is the pronunciation of "privacy" becoming Americanized? Are there any other common Brit-pronunciations that are migrating across the pond? [more inside]

I'm in a long-term, gay relationship and looking to put together a will that puts me and my partner’s mind at ease before Civil Partnerships come into affect in the UK. The problem is, how does one go about putting together a will? What are people's experiences? Should I go to a lawyer specialising in gay relationships? And, if so, can anyone recommend a good one in the UK, London area?

More clothing-related japery!
So I'm an English major and pretty queer for most things Victoriana, and have been desirous of obtaining some natty duds in the Dandy style for... years now. The problem is that I'm something of a failure at all this fashion stuff. I am just no good at it. I don't dress like a slob, but I have no idea how one would go about obtaining, you know, waistcoats. Especially at reasonable prices, since I really don't have all that much discretionary income.

So: enlighten me! Where do you find these sorts of things for real bargain-basement prices? If you have specific regional advice, I live in Madison, WI and have easy access to Minneapolis/St. Paul. Otherwise, specific ebay strategies might be helpful? I find browsing the listings tedious, and although I have bid on things occasionally, there's always someone willing to pay more than me. Are there other sites worth looking at for this sort of thing?

Thanks in advance!

My workplace (in the UK) has recently decided that every desk must have a laminated card with "Action To Be Taken In The Event Of A Bomb Threat". This strikes me as somewhat bizarre in that although I work for a communications company there is no infrastructure here to damage (barring remote switch access). Should the fact that these have been posted around the building out of the blue trigger a paranoia alert or is it just the company being a tad silly? Does anyone out there have any experience with this sort of thing?
