Nearly a decade ago I discovered that I might be a British dual-citizen. I finally sent in the paperwork, and my application status just changed to "your new passport has been printed and will be delivered shortly." Wow! Thanks, MetaFilter! Now, where do I learn Dual Citizenship 101? What awesome new superpowers do I have, beyond being able to live in the
EU UK? [more inside]
I've been offered a bit of freelance editing work by a British publisher. As a Canadian, I know I would have to declare that income when I file my Canadian income taxes. But would I also have to file income taxes with the British govt? Bonus UK tax question after the jump! [more inside]
I am looking for a straightforward British economic business plan financials calculator for Excel so that I can look serious! I found a similar thing from startupmodels.com but it is really for the USA. Any signposting to something comprehensive with built in calculations?
I was just wondering if the MeFi Hive Mind might know of good places in Los Angeles to watch the live election returns for the British General Election (May 7, and running into the small hours) ? Preferably a British pub.... Thanks!
Maybe it's just my ears, but I swear I've heard a British accent where "ou" and "ow" sounds like a long-I -- "down" sounds like "dine", 'ground' sounds like 'grind', 'now' is 'nye', 'house' sounds like 'hise'. I've looked around the internet for descriptions of British accents and came up empty. Is there a name for this component, or is it tied to a specific dialect/accent?
Flestrin minimus, a US citizen by birth and also a British citizen by descent by way of being the legitimate son of a British father, is planning to travel to London to visit family and study. He has a valid US pasport and has applied for a British passport, BUT said British passport has not yet arrived (it turns out that allowing 40% longer than the 10 week estimate was not enough extra padding). So, he has a US pasport, a one-way plane ticket and time constraints. How best to proceed? [more inside]
I live in the US and have followed the RIAA/MPAA suits closely. Over the years I have heard British news agencies report such-and-such as being charged with illegal downloading and wondered if that were even possible. [more inside]
Seeking ideas for plannning a multi-course, romantic, home-cooked meal for two that is also thoroughly, completely English. The more traditional the better. Looking for dishes in season, no seafood, ideally with a focus on lamb as a centerpiece and easy on the potato/bread. Other then that, assume a high level of cooking skill, endless time for fiddly bits, and acess to pretty much anything and a well stocked UK grocery importer store nearby. [more inside]
We are moving to London and we'd like to bring our American mobile phones to use with whatever British network provider we decide to sign up with. We will no longer have a contract with our US carrier once we move. What do we have to do in order to use UK (and other European) SIM cards in our phones and have them work as well as they did in the US? Complication: Verizon [more inside]
So, every time I go looking for recommendations for makeup, etc. (here, and Makeup Alley, mostly), the majority of highly rated items are US products that are usually impossible or expensive for me to get, which is why I'd like your tips for your top-rated favorite bath and beauty items made-locally / available in Europe at reasonable cost. Maybe I can replace a few things, and find some new gems. [more inside]

Did anyone claim that "Enron couldn't happen in the UK"? I'm looking for actual examples of politicians/commentators/business leaders stating that an Enron-style collapse couldn't happen in the UK due to stronger corporate governance culture here than in the US. [more inside]

In the US, the first syllable of "privacy" rhymes with "eye." In the UK, it rhymes with "give." So why, when listening to an audiobook, did I hear a British reader (with a standard British dialect) pronounce it the American way? Was the reader just being weird, or is the pronunciation of "privacy" becoming Americanized? Are there any other common Brit-pronunciations that are migrating across the pond? [more inside]
