What channels can I get from a tuner card in NYC using just the antenna? No cable hookup or FIOS or any of that fancy sh*t. I plug the card into the computer, I put the antenna in the window, I activate the relevant programs, and . . . . ?

I have a Hauppauge WinTV950Q USB tuner that I use to watch over-the-air television (usually HD) on my laptop. I have tried to record shows (using the WinTVv7 software), but the files it creates are enormous .ts files, ~10GB per hour or more, which I can't save/burn/share. How do I compress these to some usable size? I've often watched TV shows which are ~500MB/h and the quality doesn't seem too degraded.

Is there a free program or way to have my macbook act as a pitch pipe/tuning fork, at various frequencies? For example, a sustained A at 441 Hz. And then other notes from the chromatic scale using equal temperament.

I have a laptop with a screen that's broken. I want to buy a USB digital TV tuner device and then permanently attach the laptop to my TV, which currently only gets used for watching DVDs. Does anyone know of a list of free-to-air digital TV channels I could expect to be able to watch with a setup like this? I'm in the Washington DC area.

Should I get an HDTV tuner for my desktop computer? I can think of some reasons for me to get one but I am unsure if I will use it enough to justify buying it in the first place. I have been thinking whether or not to pick one up and attach a homemade antenna to it to get some free OTA HDTV.

I recently bought an Avermedia a327 Mini PCI ATSC (DTV) tuner card which I put in my Dell Vostro 1500. I get horrible signal strength (unwatchable) through the built-in antennas.

How do I turn my computer into a TV and is it a good idea? I've just moved into halls of residence at university and I've found that I can't tune my TV because I don't have the right remote. I don't have alot of space (I can't fit my keyboard on my desk at the moment) so I thought it might be a good idea to get a tv tuner for my computer instead of buying a new tv. I've just ordered a macbook so I'd prefer to use that but I also have a desktop PC I could use.

Scenario: the Cable line in my house comes into the living room. My desktop is in my bedroom, on the other side of the house, nowhere near that coaxial line... I'd love my desktop to act as a DVR, recording tv from that cable line. Is there some sort of solution other than running coaxial across the house to get me a cable line in my bedroom?

I have a laptop with flatscreen plugged into it, making for one large monitor encompassing the laptop and the external monitor. I've recently started recording some TV shows to watch at more convenient times.
For some reason when I go to play the recording back, whether it be with windows media player or the InterVideo program that came with the USB tuner, I only get a picture on the laptop monitor.
If I try and and move it over to the other (larger) external monitor i still get the sound playing fine, but the picture is just black.
I can watch live TV on either monitor, it's only the video playback that has a problem.
any thoughts?

How can i use a PC LCD monitor as a TV, without using a PC? I found TV Tuners online, but they usually require a computer to be there.. I'm just thinking that, considering lcd tv prices, I might as well buy a bargain basement lcd monitor and hook it up to a tuner. and the cool thing is, the lcd monitor already has enough pixels to display HD!

Can anyone recommend a TV tuner for a Mac? I have an iBook, so it has to be either a firewire or USB model (not a PC card), and i'm hoping to spend under a hundred bucks. I have no real interest in any TVR functions, as my hard drive is maxed out already and I have a TiVo at home. I'm at Dartmouth for a month - which is in the middle of nowhere - so it must be available online to be shipped immediately, preferably with expedited shipping.
