I particularly hate flying. I'm also not good at being in strange places, but the flying is my big concern at the moment. I have to fly in a few days and even though this is a trip for fun, that I expect to enjoy (in between the flights), I am filled with dread when I think about it. [more inside]
Help me find an english speaking guide to Tokyo who is not part of guide company and who will lead me into the warrens and twisted streets off the main drags. [more inside]
looking for itinerary help... [more inside]
I'm in Munich for three days this summer (around the last of week of June) and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for hostels? I'd prefer a social atmosphere but nothing too party-oriented. Also, what are some must-see and must-do things for a short visit to Munich?
Are economic woes/strikes in Greece likely to disrupt my holiday plans next week? [more inside]
After years of wanting to, I finally bought tickets to go to Japan this summer! (Eeeeeee!!!) I'll be flying into Tokyo and I'm already planning to get tickets for the Shinkansen to travel to Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima. Can you help me figure out great places to see, delicious things to eat, special keepsakes to bring home, and how to deal with logistics while I'm there? [more inside]
I have unexpectedly received a week off work from June 13th to the 21st. Please tell me where and how to vacation alone. [more inside]
Trying to take a short trip with two toddlers where they can get knee-deep in nature - forests, lakes, whatever. Ideally it's a nice, high-end hotel that's family friendly, a short flight (we'd like to go beyond the road trip radius) from LA. Any suggestions? Maybe somewhere outside of Portland?
I would like to take my wife and two kids ( 4 & 6 ) to the San Diego Zoo. Outside of that, what else is awesome to do in San Diego? We will rent a car. We will be going sometime in July. Where should we stay? Give me all the cool things we should do during a 5 day period.
I'm driving through Quebec on vacation the first week of June, and would love some general travel tips, ideas, and itinerary advice in exploring the Eastern Townships, Quebec City, and Montreal, for someone who's never been 'round those parts. [more inside]
I have a business trip to Toronto the first week of June. I've never been, and will only have about three days with some of them occupied by work but my nights free and most likely one full day to myself. Any suggestions about things to do or see? [more inside]
In a few months I will move home - but how can I know this is right for me? [more inside]
My wife and I would love to visit a dark sky park in the U.S. (doesn't matter if there's an observatory attached to it). [more inside]
I would like to visit a city in the US that is not commonly thought of as a vacation destination, but still has a lot to offer a tourist. However, as a woman of colour that does not drive and will be travelling alone, I would like a safe and friendly choice. I would like ideas for places with a lot of history and fine dining, which are easy to travel by foot/ public transportation, and friendly towards different looking people. Examples of what I am and am not looking for inside... [more inside]
Can you recommend hikes in the Yellowstone area in June? [more inside]
A friend and I travel together frequently. What are some interesting questions we can ask one another while we're hiking for hours on end? [more inside]
I am flying a contractor to Montreal today to pick up some very important, time-sensitive packages for my business, and then flying him back to the US tomorrow with the parcels. I'm really out of my element here and it's super critical that the delivery go off without a hitch. Please help walk me through the process of retrieval, customs, dealing with agents and brokers, paying duties, etc. [more inside]
So after a lifetime of wanting to visit the US, I've been invited to a conference in Pasadena in September, and so am tagging on a week of holiday at the end. I really want to go to San Francisco and explore the surrounding area, however looking at hotels, ones that are in guides or previous AskMeFi posts as being around $100-150 per night are coming up as $300-400 per night, so 4-5 nights of stay is around $1000. I have three short hours (during rush hours) while waiting for a connecting flight at the airport, how to optimize that time?
Planning to spend a week around Christmas in Puerto Rico with my wife and two kids. Have been watching airfare from DC - has been pretty consistent at about $350 RT. Exact days are flexible, so flying in and out on Wednesday to take advantage of cheaper mid-week fares is fine. Do I pull the trigger and buy now, or do I have a reasonable chance to save significant dollars by waiting?
I travel a lot for work - mostly short domestic trips. Mostly I enjoy it but sometimes the exhaustion and disruption to my usual routine becomes overwhelming. My fridge has nothing but condiments in it, my laundry pile is sky high, all my usual habits around diet, exercise and sleep are upended. I am tired of talking and tired of meeting new people and oh god, tired of sitting in cramped plane seats. If you also travel a lot for work, what do you do to take care of yourself and create a sense of continuity, wellbeing and peace wherever you happen to be? [more inside]
I'm going to Guatamala for a few weeks, in two weeks! I'll be at language school in Xela. For various reasons, I'd very much like to have a cell phone with podcast-playing capability while I'm there; I also use a meditation podcast when I fly and would very much like to have that available to me while I'm getting there and leaving. How should I go about making this happen? I currently have an iPhone with Verizon within the US, would be fine getting something new for the few weeks I'm there. Money is not limitless, but this is a pretty big deal for me so I can be flexible.
Hey, y'all! I've gotten a short-notice approval to go to a professional conference in New Haven, Connecticut. The conference ends on a Friday afternoon, and I'd like to take the next couple days to poke around in the area before returning home. Any recommendations as to what a solo female should do over a weekend in that neck of the woods? Thanks!
Where do you travel to feel like you're the only travelers in a peaceful oasis? What I'd really love is an amazing sense of remoteness and quiet. [more inside]
I want to experience Denver as an entrenched local rather than a tourist. Any suggestions? [more inside]
What would you give as a gift (single item or basket of useful stuff) for someone planning a long road trip? I've thought of audio books, picnic kit, car games, etc. but was hoping others might have good ideas.
I watched Unplanned America on Netflix, an Australian travel show in which these guys travel around America, and it made me realize this is a category that I enjoy. What are some other non-American travel shows about America? [more inside]
I'm coming up short looking through Google Images and on Amazon for a coffee mug to replace the special one I broke this morning. [more inside]
I have one day/night to plan, using public transport between Hovmantorp (where I'll be seeing in Midsommar with friends) and Malmö. Sunday 21st June, and the morning of the Monday. What do you think the best use of that 24h/230km would be? I love wilderness and wild space, amazing sights and strange experiences. Anything "different" or inherently Swedish. I have a relatively low budget and I'm limited to public transport. [more inside]
A friend and I are headed to Göttingen, Germany, for part of the Handel Festival. We'll have some time to kill during the days (May 21-24) before the evening concerts. Can you recommend some daytime activities in Göttingen or within a short radius by train? We'd especially like to find a good place to go hiking and watch birds, but other suggestions are welcome. [more inside]
What are the weirdest and/or most intense non-documentary movies that are nonetheless totally safe to watch on a crowded plane? I'm looking for movies that are uncompromising, but nonetheless have no gore, no nudity and no disturbing violence. Assume I have well-insulated earphones. (Examples: GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS or THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T.)
I'm having no joy getting answers to this: is there curbside check-in at Chicago O'Hare for Delta? My wife is on a flight on Monday, and will be arriving by cab, and currently has a foot problem which means she can't lug her luggage inside.
I work from home and have an opportunity to move soon. I enjoy fresh starts and wondering about buying a house in the sticks somewhere and living the good life. I've recently cut my last geographic tie, and after a spell travelling, wondering if anyone has some insight/anecdata into living styles that might suit someone for whom commute is not an issue. I recently visited Tokyo. While I was there, I found myself in the Kabuki-cho region near Shinjuku. I hadn't checked the state department advisories before I left, but if I had I would have found there have been warnings about this going back years. I was drugged by a tout, who then led me around town in a dissociative state all night, and in the morning I found that my credit card had charges going up to the limit, all in $1k or $2k increments. I called my card company and told them the transactions were fraudulent, and also told the embassy and the Shinjuku police. Is there anything more I should do? I'd also like to reconstruct the night - can I get detailed records from my credit card company? [more inside]
After reading these two articles from Outside Magazine (1, 2), I would like to read more blogs/essays about the day to day life of an Adventure/travel guide. Any recommendations? [more inside]
Simple as that. I fly into Munich Airport at 0700 on Friday morning. I have a rail booking to Hohenems (extreme west of Austria). I am going to a concert in Hohenems at 2000 hrs on Friday night. Back to Munich Airport the following morning to catch a flight at 1100. If Deutsche Bahn is on strike, how do I make this work? [more inside]
I'm going to put the TL:DR up here. I have lots of limiting core beliefs involving my worth. Meeting new people causes me great anxiety due to these beliefs, which include not being allowed to have any needs, especially those that might inconvenience, irritate, or anger the other person. I also have panic disorder. I've met someone online that I want to meet in person but it would involve a drive of several hours. Travel = panic = debilitating and anxiety-inducing physical symptoms. Help me meet this person while remaining functional. [more inside]
My partner and I potentially have the opportunity to relocate to the Aarhus area of Denmark for six months. This would be part of an exchange program based at VIA University College in Horsens for me and potentially a little more ad-hoc for her. We have a whole bunch of questions about Denmark, Jutland, Aarhus, accomodation, commuting and other things. [more inside]
I am a 31yo queer woman who is considered fairly masculine presenting in my daily life (I am frequently addressed as "sir" by waiters, customer service people, etc, and many never realize their mistake). I'm headed to Cameroon for the first time for a business/research trip and I want to be received well, which I unfortunately suspect means changing my gender presentation. I would love tips and tricks, and support, particularly for people who have been to West Africa before. [more inside]
Asking for friends who are in Turkey for the next week. They have done lots of guidebook research and have accommodations sorted out, but are looking for personal recommendations for must-see/must-do activities as well as recommendations for outstanding food and drink (read: alcohol wherever possible). Dearest Mefites of the USA, my 21 yo daughter is planning to galavant around your country this Northern Hemisphere summer, and we'd like your input! Any advice/recommendations for things to see, places to go, how to get there, accommodation, etc appreciated. We're yet to book flights, leaving everything pretty much to the last minute. We have friends in San Fran who will likely be her first stop, then after that, all is variable. [more inside]

I want to take a vacation that includes some sort of intellectual festival or conference where I'll meet interesting people and discuss ideas. (I'm a party animal.) Think TED gone to summer camp or Davos for hipsters ;-) The Do Lectures and Porcupine Freedom Festival both sound massively interesting - what other events should I look into? [more inside]
My wife struggles with anxiety and paranoid thoughts about our marriage. She'll often start asking questions of me about where I've been, if I'm seeing anyone else, whether I want to leave her and whether I think I'd be better off without her. I'm used to this, and I know that these are just intrusive thoughts rather than what she rationally believes, but I'm about to go away for work and I can't stop feeling anxious about what might happen whilst I'm away. We want to see the parts that showcase China's natural beauty, what we couldn't see anywhere else, what will likely be gone by the time we return next time. But we are limited by traveling with a super flexible 2 year old, and we don't have a ton of time. What do you recommend? [more inside]

Flying out to Florida at the end of May to stay on an island resort. Yay sounds exciting, right? Well, I've never flown before. I've never been to Florida before. I've never stayed on an island before. I've never stayed in a 4-star hotel before. I don't know what I don't know to ask what I should know! Please hope me. [more inside]
