Semester in SEA.

A friend wants to spend 3 or 4 months in South East Asia. His budget is US $3000 (including transportation). Is this enough money, if he stays in mid-range guesthouses? He is a writer, and is wondering if bringing his laptop is a good idea. He's been to China before, but is completely unfamiliar with South East Asia, and hasn't traveled extensively in the past. Any itinerary ideas would be appreciated.

Travel dates in the months before passport expiration

My U.S. passport expires 13 Oct 08 and I need to book one international trip before then: leaving New York 17 July 08, returning 2 Aug 08 (one destination country, a non-EU-member in Eastern Europe, plus stops for flight transfers in one or two EU member countries). Is it even worth researching various countries' and airlines' how-close-to-expiration-date safety ranges for travel, or should I just assume I MUST renew my passport before then?

Photography trips in NYC area

I'm looking for ideas for interesting, off-the-beaten-path places to go and take photographs in New York or the surrounding areas. It would be good to take photographs that not absolutely identical to things you see in travel books, so no touristy or centrally located areas. Recent visits been to the abandoned buildings of Ellis Island, the recently-collapsed smallpox hospital on Roosevelt Island, Astroland, Vinegar Hill, and Washington Rock (in NJ). What are some other photo-worthy places?

Where to find travel insurance for a dialysis patient?

My Dad does hemodialysis 3-times a week. He is a Canadian, but we have found a great dialysis clinic that will treat him here in Louisiana when he visits. The problem is that it now looks like we are going to have trouble finding travel insurance for him. Mom and Dad won't travel to the States without it. Has anyone got any ideas how we can best find this insurance for him? Do you know any dialysis patients who have found travel insurance for a U.S. vacation?
