How do you make due in an area where you do not speak the native language and you have no one that you know to help you?

My fiancee and I are planning a honeymoon abroad, we're thinking of visiting Spain and/or France. Neither one of us are well spoken in the native languages... do we need to worry? What are people's experiences in this situation (just traveling abroad in general, to a place where you don't speak the language)? Is it a huge burden to bear on yourselves or on the country's native peoples? [more inside]

Reconsidering Plans in Asia

A friend of mine recently posted this question about doing research in Tibet . His university has decided that it would like to err on the side of caution - thus, they are restricting him from going to Tibet. So, he needs a new plan and potentially a new topic of research - probably still focusing on Sino-Globalization as it relates to Tibetans. His university suggested Yunnan Province as a possibility, but do you Mefites have any suggestions? (Budget is $3000 for 3 weeks)

Help me find a clear frequency for my Ipod.

I hook my Ipod to my car stereo using an FM transmitter. Before setting out I'd like to choose a frequency that's not going to compete with local radio stations en-route. Is there a simple list of frequencies likely to be safe from interference? Alternatively has anybody done yet built some kind mash-up website that would give me a frequency for a given journey? I am in the UK but would be interested if this has been done anywhere. [more inside]

Search engine for cultural events

I've lost a link to a search engine for cultural events (museum exhibitions, etc) that was handy when planning short weekend trips, say to New York or Philadelphia. I can sometimes find copies of Time Out New York, but not always. Prefer the web anyway. Anyone have a method for checking out what's going on in the next 2-3 months in museums and galleries? Thanks
