Getting a Visa to Brazil.

I'm a US Citizen that will be traveling to Brazil (stopping there for a week or so, before going to Bolivia for 2.5-3 months) or so. Two issues:1) getting the visa, 2) departing out through Brazil three months later.

best ticket price from NYC to Grand Bahama Island?

Best price from a NYC airport to Freeport, Grand Bahamas Island. Going with a few friends to the Bahamas from March 18-25, 2006. Any suggestions on where to find the cheapest flight? I wish JetBlue flew to Freeport instead of just Nassau but we have a free place to stay (resort) in Freeport. Not sure of where to look...so any ideas would be great. And if you have suggestions on what we should check out on GBI (away from the touristy resort crap and the spring breakers..)

travel writing

Good Travel Writing - i'd like to learn how to write better. Not for professional submission, just for me. Any suggestions of good books? (Besides the Best American Traveling Writing that's released annually) Good websites with advice or excerpts?

collapsible travel weights?

I'll be in a developing country this summer, and most likely wont have access to any sort of gym with weights. (i do a lot of cardio and lift too) I've looked into travel weights andI've looked around, but all I have been able to find so far are $50 Aquabells water-fillable weights, which have a max of 16 pounds each. How can I keep my strength up this summer, while not having ways to lift? I've always done cardio and lifting with machines, so i know I can work out without them, i'm just not entirely sure how. Thanks!

Renting A Car Internationally

InternationalCarRentalFilter In May, the girlfriend and I will be going to the Domincan Republic, flying into Santiago, DR courtesy of cheap JetBlue tickets. We plan to rent a car (she is Dominican/Puerto Rican and speaks Spanish fluently) so we wanted to rent a car to see all the country that we could (we shy away from tourist places). Its the first time shes been there so its sort of a time when she really wants to see her country. I've never rented a car internationally before. How can I keep this as cheap as possible? Summer programs

I'm in school in the US- I'm interested in finding short-term programs abroad in the summer term (volunteer/intern/or other) that are fairly inexpensive. I'm also interested in doing something that stays away from a vacation-volunteering type experience. Preferably to Latin America or Asia. Any ideas/thoughts for basic resources to get started with? A lot of web searches turn up programs that are very expensive and seem to be geared at rich American youth.

Cheapest way from NYC or DC to Managua, Nicaragua?

I'm going to Nicaragua this summer for the entire summer, and I'm looking for the cheapest way to get there from NYC or DC, to Managua. I'll leave near the end of May and return mid-August. Besides Expedia and the usual set of online price comparison engines, is there a good source for cheap fares abroad? (are there student discount places?)

Exploring Toronto

Going to Toronto next weekend for the first time, for three days and staying at the Canadiana Backpackers Hostel in downtown Toronto. We are three college students - can anyone recommend free/cheap things to do and explore? We'd prefer to avoid touristy spots, have a high interest in walking everywhere, exploring ethnic neighborhoods (where'd the best place for good, authentic dim sum in Toronto?)

Looking for material on Bronx culture and history...

I'm organzing an alternative spring break trip for some students from my college to the South Bronx to work on urban environmental issues. The students i have going on have a solid understanding of urban issues (most are from cities), but don't know much about the Bronx itself. Can anyone suggest some good resources, both online and off? I was thinking of Caro's Power Broker to discuss what happened with Robert Moses and the decline of the borough, but i was hoping for other resources from MeFiers.

Do US citizens need a passport to visit Canada?

If I am a US Citizen, and want to go to Canada for a few days, do i need a passport? I had one, but it was stolen, I'm a poor student right now, so i dont have the cash (or time to wait) for a new one to come. Is a driver's license or birth certificate considered official enough documentation?

Any tips for a summer of working abroad?

I have the possibility of going abroad next summer, fully-funded through a scholarship program through my university, up to $3000 for the summer. Here's the catch -- it has to be a work or intern experience - it can't be study abroad. The only stipulation for work - over the summer i have to do at least 35 hrs/week, and 8 weeks of work - so there could be a study compoenent at the beginning too. I've never had the opportunity to go abroad in college (cause of cash restraints and b/c of transferring schools), and I've really wanted to go to South America or the Carribbean. My Spanish is pretty weak, but i'm working on it right now, until next summer. Any suggestions on programs or countries, or fellow MeFi experiences? I'm pretty much starting in the dark here.
