Big family wedding coming up in early December in NYC. There will be a lot of family gatherings going on, so there won't really be time for us to do whole day tourism schleps. We will be staying in Tribeca and I'm looking for any and all recommendations for fun, interesting, cool things to do (in December) that are quick and easy to get to from where we're staying, and won't take all day to experience. Things that we can run out and do in an hour or two in between family events. General interests inside. [more inside]
My son is attending a "theater camp" in NYC in 2 weeks. He's staying with the group, we were planning to do touristy stuff during the week. We had booked an Airbnb a couple weeks ago in West Orange NJ. This morning it cancelled on us. This was an awesome place that had a pool and other amenities that my wife was looking forward to help keep our other children busy during the days that I would also be working in Manhattan. Needless to say we're pretty disappointed. [more inside]
My wife and I are taking our 17 month old to NYC for Memorial Day weekend. We are flying into and out of LGA, and our plan is to take public transit as much as possible, but to use Uber Family (which provides a car seat) to make a couple of key connections. We are especially concerned about the end of our trip, when must get from Midwood in Brooklyn to LGA. We'd like to use Uber Family, but we don't know how reliable it is in that area. [more inside]
I'm taking a four day trip to NYC over Memorial Day weekend (solo). I have plans on Sunday evening but other than that, my time is completely unaccounted for. And aside from a few non-specific ideas, I'm overwhelmed by choices. [more inside]
I'm planning to go to the Storm King Art Center (in New Windsor, NY) on Friday. I'd like to eat something delicious for lunch while I'm there or before I go. I can bring it from Manhattan (or anyplace in the city, I guess), but I would have to buy it the day before on Thanksgiving. Or, I could eat near the museum or near my hotel in Monroe. [more inside]
I'm moving to New York in September for a new job and I'm planning to do a one month sublet on Airbnb so that I can find a permanent place once I have arrived in New York. Is there anything that I need to check up on or ask the hosts before I select a place? How do I make a decision when there are multiple options? [more inside]
You get to spend a week in New York, Paris or Rome, during which money isn't much of an object. You're not a millionaire by any means, but for once you're going to have a romantic holiday where you're not cutting costs by backpacking or AirBNBing or packing your own lunch or commuting from the outer rim every morning. I've been to NY dozens of times and enjoy exploring neighborhoods like the Village and SoHo where there are lots of shops, coffeeshops, restaurants, etc. I prefer independent shops over the corporate stores you'd find in Midtown. I haven't spent a whole lot of time in NY in the last 10 years so I'm not aware of neighborhoods that may have changed. I'm visiting this weekend please help me decide where to spend my time! Dearest Mefites of the USA, my 21 yo daughter is planning to galavant around your country this Northern Hemisphere summer, and we'd like your input! Any advice/recommendations for things to see, places to go, how to get there, accommodation, etc appreciated. We're yet to book flights, leaving everything pretty much to the last minute. We have friends in San Fran who will likely be her first stop, then after that, all is variable. [more inside]
My husband and I are planning a vacation to visit our daughter. She lives in Brooklyn. We would like to get out of the city for most of the week and go see...something. Can you throw some ideas at me please? [more inside]

The short of it: (1) Do you have any personal experience getting into Canada and re-entering the US with only a driver's license and birth certificate? (2) What is the drive like between Toronto and Ogdensburg for someone who has really only spent time in cities and driving on major highways up and down the East and West coasts? (3) What should we do in Toronto? [more inside]
Trying to work out some travel logistics. If I am on an international flight that gets in to JFK at 7:20pm on a Tuesday, what is the likelihood that I could make it to Penn Station to catch a 9:20pm train? [more inside]
Mr. Slothhog and I will be in NYC for New Years Eve. We are going with 3 other lovely friends. The actual holiday is one of our group's actual 40th birthday. Interest has been expressed in attending a party... Please give us input about things that will make this visit amazing, especially the ringing in of the new year!
We will be travelling to the US from Europe next year, and I'm interested in the Macy's parade. Is it worth timing our trip so we can see it - particularly as hotels seem to be cheaper in November - or is it a bad idea to visit the US during Thanksgiving (and maybe the chaos of Black Friday)? Possibly relevant: neither of us have driving licenses so would be reliant on public transport, and would plan on spending a few days in NYC before travelling on or flying home.
I am planning an anniversary trip to NYC for the third weekend in October - we would like someplace fun and reasonable to stay (an actual hotel, so AirBnB is out). We plan on doing some touristy things (a Broadway show, some of the big museums), but we would like to spend the rest of the time in a part of the city that's entertaining and quirky and a bit off the beaten path. Any recommendations of where to stay, and things to do once we're there, would be welcome. [more inside]
In a few weeks I'll be flying into NYC around 9:00 AM and flying out around 9:00 PM, and I'd like to take a shower somewhere and maybe even leave my bag for the day so I can wander the city. So far the only options I've found are to pay about $50 for access to an airline lounge, which seems too pricey for what I want, or to book a hotel room. Surely there are cheaper options? I'm not too picky about location, but somewhere in Lower Manhattan would probably be best. Please help me out, New Yorkers!
As I said in my last post, I'm packing up and hitting the road to travel the world for a year. I have a one bedroom apartment full of stuff in Brooklyn Heights, NY that I need to store. I'm going to try to pare down as much as possible, but I have nice furniture that I paid a good amount of money for and like, as well as art and books, much of which I want to keep. Having done some quick searching online, it definitely appears to make sense to store much of my furniture from my cost/benefit point of view, versus buying all new furniture at similar prices to what I previously spent when I get back. I'm looking for climate controlled storage for a large one bedroom worth of stuff, anywhere in the NYC area. [more inside]

Can anyone recommend any queer events/hangouts in New York City? By "queer", I mean non-standard gender/sexuality and probably radical left politics. By "events", I mean DIY shows, potlucks, reading groups, screenings or whatever else. By "hangouts" I mean social centres, autonomous spaces, concert venues, cafes and bars.

Looking for good, cheap accommodation in Buffalo, NY. My partner is visiting to work at Buffalo Uni for about 7 days in late September. They've offered to organise accommodation in a Holiday Inn at $98 a night. This feels a little steep. We'd like to shop around a bit, perhaps look at alternatives other than a hotel/motel. Perhaps a student "sleep in my spare room" scheme or something. Advice much appreciated. [more inside]
Hi I am visiting NY city October-November 2011. Last year I brought back to Australia the Staples 'Easy' button for the 4 people I managed as gifts. That was a great success!! This year I manage 20 people. I need distinctively New York gifts, under $5 each, light to pack, suitable for office workers. Any ideas?
