I need to drive a rental car one way from Memphis to Atlanta and want to know if there's a way to avoid the hefty "drop off fee" that I wasn't aware I'd have to pay. [more inside]
I will be travelling to France, Italy, and Spain in a few weeks, and I'm trying to decide the best way to carry money with me. Many sites have recommended money belts, but this seems weird and awkward for actually paying for things! I would feel weird untucking my shirt and reaching into my pants in a fancy restaurant, for example. [more inside]
I am going to Japan soon, and will be there for a month. The answer is yen, obviously. But I have American and Australian dollars/bank accounts and can't figure out which one I should use. [more inside]

A friend of my girlfriend's is getting married in Asia over Christmas 2014. She's planning to go, and wants me to accompany her (and, money aside, I'd like to go). She'll be upset and disappointed if I don't, and is already upset and disappointed that I'm balking. She makes enough money to afford the trip without financial contortions, and...I don't, or don't feel like I do. This is a recurring point of contention in our relationship, and, generally, I'm not sure if I'm being unreasonable, she's being unreasonable, or a little bit of both. [more inside]

About 10 years ago I inherited my grandmas small fortune of paper and coin currency she amassed during the 70's and 80's while visiting nearly 100 world countries. The shoebox-collection contains maybe 200 coins and 100 paper notes, and some of them are really quite impressive! I've been lugging this box around for years and the time has come to finally part with it (sorry grandma). I'm not a coin collector and really don't know much about any of it, but with the help of a few books I researched a handful of coins and notes only to find out they're not worth diddly (<$1, if that). I have a feeling most of the collection is like this except for a few gold Rand coins and some notes that were previously appraised. Hivemind: what are some ways to liquidate my collection?

My 33 year old older brother is sponging off my parents and isn't getting a job, I'm worried that he's going to get kicked out of my parents' house. He got fired a while ago and I'm pretty sure his main problem is depression/having given up; I'm pretty sure he's better than this though. [more inside]
Hi all, So my UK Lloyds regular bank account was suspended while I was in the USA and now they want me to show up in a local branch. I have spent three days on the phone explaining to them that I cannot because I am in the USA at the moment. They insist that I do and until then all my funds are frozen! Nightmare! It looks like I will have to fly home just to show my face at the branch so I can access my funds. Anyone had anything like this? Do I really have to fly back to the UK just to ID myself? Thank you!

Last March, I went to London and returned without spending all of the Pounds I'd withdrawn from an ATM machine. Believing that the money changers in the airports are major ripoffs, I decided to hang onto the Pounds. "Surely I will run into a friend with plans to visit London soon!" Hasn't happened. Anyone have any creative ideas on how to exchange the Pounds for Dollars now? Without paying someone a ghastly percentage?

I am terrified to travel. Trying to overcome some of the most basic of challenges is intimidating such as where do I eat, where do I sleep, how do I make money all come to mind. I figure I keep a bag of rice with some peanut butter and oats on me for food. I'm thinking a tent for a place to sleep and panhandling if I wind up screwing this up too bad. I would day labor no problem if it comes down to it, wondering if anyone has any experience with this? I keep trying to find travel companions, but everyone keeps falling through. [more inside]

How did rich European gentlemen on a "grand tour" of Europe in the 18th Century manage their finances? I can't imagine they carried enough money (or gold) to support months or years of travel--was there a system of banks they could use? Or credit notes? Also, how did they arrange to get their packages shipped home?
Last minute Japan travel: after making an error with timing I need to arrange one-way travel from Tokyo to Kumamoto quite quickly. What are the cheapest options? I have looked into flights and trains (for the 17th of August) and both seem expensive (about £200-£250 a ticket). I am in the UK at the moment. Would it be worth waiting until we arrive in Japan? Perhaps trying to get last minute flights at the airport? [more inside]
