I heard the south of France is lovely this year?

I always found the answers to travel questions here very interesting, so here it goes: At the end of August/beginning of September, we want to go on a little post-conference vacation in the south of France. Our plan is to rent a car in Lyon and fly back two weeks later from Marseille. Do you have any tips and recommendations for us? Anything special we should keep in mind regarding to renting a car? We thought that the area of Languedoc-Roussillon is not as crowded as the Cotê d'Azure, so which cities should we visit? Primarily visiting some interesting places and relaxing at the beach is planned but tips for some short hikes are also highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Paris for Paris haters.

I am booking a trip where the most cost-effective option will have me spending about 24 hours alone in Paris with nothing much to do. I've been many times before, done all the tourist stuff, and honestly, don't really like the city. Some bad memories plus something about France just doesn't sit right with me. What's the least Paris-like place in Paris where I can enjoy my day/evening? [more inside]

How Much Should I Pay For A Monthlong Flat in Paris?

Going on honeymoon in June to Paris. I have a friend who runs a business renting apartments in Paris for a month at a time, and he's just sent me the first two options. Things To Do In Paris Over The Holidays?

I will be in Paris for a week and some change between Christmas and New Years. I've been before so I know all the standard tourist spots- but I know the holiday season will mess up openings and closings so I'm interested in fun, interesting things and places ...that will be open. Ideally looking for performances, music, English-language theater, etc. I'll be traveling with a classical musician with a fondness for opera, so looking for things along those lines. Any seasonally specific events or things I shouldn't miss?

Where should we go this summer?

Girlfriend and I are looking to get away this August, and we're looking for destinations. We want to spend ~10 days relaxing, experiencing some natural beauty, being warm, eating delicious food (both of the restaurant variety and the pick-up-bread-and-cheese-from-the-local-vendor variety) and generally unplugging from day-to-day life. Not big partiers, but we'd frequent the local cafe/pub. Something like a little cottage in the south of France would be our dream, but we're working with a budget of ~$4000 all-inclusive, so France may have to wait. We're 30ish and live in Boston. Idea us please!

How to order a specific coffee-based experience in Paris

When in Paris in 2009, my sister and I saw the people at a table near us being served a delightful assortment of small pastries to accompany a coffee - and at the time, we learned the name for this. Apparently it is a "thing." But those brain cells have long since been killed off. We may be re-visiting Paris in 2014, and if we want to replicate this experience...what does one call it? I think there were three small bits of heaven on the side of the coffee.

Help me plan my trip to France!

France fascinates me and will be the first country I visit outside of Spain during my time in Europe, but to be honest: I know nothing. I have approximately 13 days to spend in the country, I would like to see Paris and a few other sites in the northwest, and I will probably enter the country on the Mediterranean coast (from Spain) and leave via the Basque Country (to return to Spain). Paris to Sauternes and back

I have to be in Paris for an academic conference on May 31 to June 1st. On June 2nd, there's a marathon in Sauternes, which appears to be about 6-7 hours south-west of Paris by car. My question is (1) having never been to France, and never traveled around Europe except by train and since college, can I get from Paris to Sauternes in time to run the race at 8:30am the next morning realistically? And (2) can you help me logistically plan this ahead of time so that it minimizes risk of getting lost, missing the race, and spending a lot of money? I will be flying out of Paris, fyi, and haven't booked any flights yet.
