Whenever someone appears in traffic court, my understanding is they typically have an opportunity to explain themselves (e.g. "so just why were you going 15 over the speed limit?"). What kind of explanations do traffic court judges look most favorably on? [more inside]
My husband drives a Tractor Trailer. He has a Rand McNally TND 510, he bought a accessory for it - a Real Time Traffic Receiver that uses FM Radio Stations that currently uses 98 cities in the USA. He is disappointed in it, it doesn't seem to help him in traffic like he had hoped. What other GPS units would work better, if any, regarding traffic?
The other day, I was driving home from work and an ambulance was coming up from behind. I didn't pull over because it didn't seem useful, a nearby motorcyclist chewed me out through my open window: "You're supposed to pull over when there's an ambulance!!" Due to the not-so-snowflakey details inside, I'm struggling to understand what the right thing to do would've been. [more inside]
Why don't drivers at least in California don't use their turn signals? [more inside]
I would like to buy a used car, drive it all summer (commuting to a short-term job), then sell it. I'm a newish driver, first car, first time getting auto insurance. Recently I got a major traffic ticket, for which I've already requested a trial. It's likely I'll be done with the car before the trial date arrives. How will this pending ticket affect my insurance? Also, I don't know if my infraction is potentially worth demerit points- how would I find that out? [more inside]
While driving in very remote small town I was cited for Failure to Stop. There are problems with the case, details here are not pertinent, I meant to contest in a hearing but forgot to send in the papers. Now MA wants to suspend permission to drive in the state unless I pay $380 to avoid the suspension. I barely have half that and rely on monthly social security. What can I do to find a solution to this problem? Before Dec. 31.
I am part of a group working on a policy document for the mitigation of traffic issues (e.g. speeding). Stakeholders are having a hard time with a particular criteria which reads as follows: "85th percentile speed is in excess of the signed speed limit by 5 mph or more." [more inside]
I'm visiting New York for Thanksgiving. I'm driving from Pittsburgh to Manhattan and I arrive late tomorrow. I'm staying in the Upper West Side through Saturday, but I'm spending Thanksgiving with family in Monroe, NY. I have one night booked at a hotel in that area. Where can I conveniently and cheaply park my car in Manhattan for 5 days? How can I get from Manhattan to Monroe, NY, reliably and cheaply? I'm currently planning to park on the street and take the Port Jervis line. [more inside]
I remember playing a game ages (ten years?) ago on (now defunct) bonus.com, which involved manipulating different-coloured cars using switches and other things. I played it on a desktop computer, and it used flash or shockwave. One needed to get a certain amount of cars into specific places to pass the level. The game was played from a top-down perspective. There were many levels. I think, though I may be mistaken, that the game had a person's name in the title. Can you help me find it? [more inside]
I am searching for a live traffic flow counter which is on the net and reachable by http, or some webpage that displays hourly or cumulative vehicle statistics. [more inside]

A person with a California driver's license gets a speeding ticket while driving through West Virginia. The speed alleged on the ticket was 15 miles over the posted limit. What would be the insurance consequences if the driver simply paid off the ticket without contesting it? How could the driver find out more information about whether s/he should contest the ticket, or plead guilty to a lower speed? In what state should the person be looking for a lawyer to best answer her/his questions? What should be this person's next step? Also, would the answers be different if the alleged speed was 10 (or 9, or 5, or whatever) miles over the posted limit?
How long will it take me to drive from LAX to Irvine/Newport Beach at 4pm on a Friday? [more inside]
My friend was riding his bike through Brooklyn early Sat morning. Streets were quiet and he was not stopping at all the red lights, just slowing & crossing the (mostly) vacant intersections. Unbeknownst to him there was a cop in a patrol car following him about 1/2 a block back. After multiple blocks the cop finally pulled him over and issued separate tickets for every red light, totally about $800 worth. Although there is no dispute that he went through the lights, this was a very dick-ish move. How to protest in court? [more inside]
Afternoon commute: Headed out of town, you drive WITH traffic -- and it sux. But if you were driving toward town, from the burbs, you'd be driving AGAINST traffic. And that's a breeze. See the paradox? [more inside]
So I've just moved to LA (awesome) and am thinking of getting a motorcycle as my primary mode of transport. Thing is, when I mention this to my friends (most of which aren't licensed to ride a motorcycle), I get incredulous looks and/or stern warnings as to how silly and dangerous a proposition this is. Is it possible to get an earlier court date for a traffic issue by showing up on a given day and hoping someone cancels? Calling? Other recourse? In particular, Los Angeles Metropolitan Court? [more inside]
[Asking for a friend] My family and I are moving to a new bigish city in the non-California west. There is a house that is essentially my dream house, for what I think is a very good price. It's been on the market for a bit, probably because the property borders a fairly major thoroughfair. How big of a problem is this? Should I just run away?
I have seen many controlled intersections that have one (or more) left turn lanes with one (or more) straight-through lanes with separate signals for the left turn lane(s) versus the straight lane(s). In general, those intersections are designed to have straight-through traffic going from two opposing directions and then alternate with left-turning traffic going from two opposing directions. When the straight-through traffic is passing, why do the left-turning lanes get a red circular light rather than a green circular light or a yellow circular light? [more inside]

Toronto Mefites! I'm currently in balmy western Pennsylvania, with plans today (Sunday, December 22) to drive into Oakville, Ontario. Oakville is in Halton, about 38 miles southwest of Toronto. How difficult is that going to be in light of this weekend's ice storm?

I will probably have to spend the entire month of November commuting into Sacramento from Davis. I will DEFINITELY have to travel during rush hour periods. I only got a car a few months ago and I've never had to do the job-type-commute-out-of-town thing before. What do I need to know? [more inside]
Even with the ringer set on maximum volume, I tend not to hear my phone ringing when I'm out walking on a busy London street. I'd like a ringtone that will be audible over traffic noise, but not be earsplitting or annoying when I'm indoors. Are there any acoustic properties (other than sheer loudness) that I should look for in a ringtone to help it stand out against a background of car engines and other street noise?

Until very recently, I lived in a college town where having a car was completely unnecessary. Though I had my license, I rarely drove. I am now in a place where having a car isn't absolutely necessary, but more convenient. At my parents' behest, I also now have a car, which I'm very grateful for. However, there's such a mental block for me to drive said car that I haven't driven anywhere for over a week. Any suggestions to overcome this general avoidance of driving? [more inside]

Asking for a friend, this is regarding CA traffic law: From what she has said, the due date of the fine/court appearance is coming up in two days and seeing as her car is still in the shop, what options does she have? Plead not guilty in hopes of buying some time, and showing up with proof of correction? She's not sure if her car will be fixed and properly smogged in time on or before the due date. [more inside]

I've been offered my dream job! But between it and me is my worst nightmare--a terrible 1hr+ commute in LA traffic. A commute like this is a deal breaker for me, but at the same time, this position is a career-maker and I really want to figure out how to make it work. Does anyone have suggestions, tricks, or creative ideas to make my commute better? Specifics and details below. [more inside]

I reply to a fair number of L.A. travel questions here and many of the answers (including mine) often contain dire warnings about traffic. This happens even if traffic isn't directly related to the question being asked. So, visitors to our fair city, how bad was the traffic really, and what information/advice can I give to newbie LA tourists who drive? [more inside]
My blog made the front page of a major social media site this morning and the provider promptly locked my entire account for "abuse". It took 6 hours for my blog to come back online. Was that a typical response? [more inside]
So I have a copy of Simcity 4 for Mac OS, and the patch to run it on Intel. I'm looking to switch the language from US to UK English (I want left-side traffic) but all of the instructions I've found online to do such a thing are for the Windows version, and involve modifying the Registry, which by definition ain't gonna happen for the Mac OS version. What can I do? How do I change the game's language settings on Mac OS?
Looking around at houses for sale in a high-traffic area (NYC suburbs). I-95 runs through all of the towns. What's the minimum distance I'd want the property to be from 95, in order to grow an edible vegetable garden (in raised beds)?
I've had a particularly awful experience on Friday that made me pull over and cry for a few minutes. LA freeways are a nightmare, and I really need ideas on how to internally deal with assholes on the road, and repeated incidents of dangerous aggression. I don't know how everyone else does it!
