How to teach an old baby new tricks

Our 11 month old kid loves to be helpful and tries to copy whatever we do. Unfortunately, he's about a year or two or three away from having the physical ability to do so. So what simple things can we teach him that would be sort of helpful in doing everyday things, or at least wouldn't break stuff or actively hinder us? [more inside]

I can't figure out what this strange thing is. It resembles a set of dominoes with unfamiliar symbols on them. I'm sure someone out there will recognize it immediately. Thanks! picture 1 picture 2 picture 3

Help me identify this toy!

Help me identify this toy and how it works. It's a wooden head on the end of a red dowel, about five inches long in total. Two shallow grooves are cut into the dowel, and there's a short loop of elastic with a bead on it looped through a hole in the dowel. There's also a loop of elastic about eight feet long (i.e. in circumference) with a slightly bigger wooden bead attached to it, although there's a slim possibility that this isn't related to the head part. 3D Physics toys.

A few years ago I came across some cool OpenGL 3D physics demo programs. Basically, they gave you a surface with various objects on it, and you could click and drag the objects around, and watch them bounce into other objects - knock down bowling pins, roll along the floor, all that stuff. I want to find them again, or possibly something much cooler or newer - any ideas? [more inside]
