I live in Toronto. I'm flying to New York for a week. My outgoing flight is already booked, but I'm booking my return for May 13. I usually fly Porter, which takes me from Newark to the Toronto Island airport, which I love, and is convenient. I just saw that there's construction at Newark airport, causing delays. (Info here and here) Should I avoid Newark airport for my flight back? If it affects things: In Toronto, I live downtown. In New York, I'm staying on the lower east side.
I am planning an event that I would like to be child free, and felt that one way I could make the process easier is to find a few candidates that would be qualified to take care of the kids of the people I'm inviting. I need help finding suitable persons. [more inside]
They have a popcorn maker. They have popcorn buckets, bags, and scoops. But I'm in search of a popcorn-related gift I can get some popcorn-heads in Toronto, ideally by tomorrow. These people are popcorn purists and it's really hard to get them anything popcorn-related that they don't already have. Their holy grail is "savoy salt," which I've never even heard of. What do I get these folks? Where might I get it?
I'm looking for recommendations for Toronto wedding photographers and rehearsal dinner venues that are fun, inviting, professional, but not overly expensive, and which might still be available for this September. [more inside]
I want to take my girlfriend out for a day of horseback riding. I've never done it. She's ridden a horse once or twice as a child and that's it. We live in Toronto and it's going to be a day trip so no more than an hour and a half or so of driving in either direction. Can anyone suggest a farm or stable or whatever it's called where we can do this? [more inside]
We rent a condo that my parents bought under my name last October (and pay rent to my parents), and have gradually realized that there are several bylaws that seems unreasonable. One of them is the complete prohibition of bicycles in the building. The board claims that there is a "bike room," but it's actually just a mobile bike rack in the garage where most of the bikes on the rack are missing tires, saddles, parts (so we know it's not secure, and there are thefts around). The garage also has been inaccessible for the last 8 months due to construction. The other unreasonable rule is that there is a fixed laundry room schedule that was determined before we moved in. I want to know to what extent can a condo board enforce these bylaws? What can they do? Do they actually have legal rights to tell me when I am and am not allowed to wash my clothes? What can we do to change the bylaws? [more inside]
Need marriage counselling or couples therapy in Toronto. I'm not really sure how to go about finding and choosing someone. We're married 20 years and in our early fifties. Central T.O. would be great but we're not adverse to travelling further afield for somebody good. If you'd like to respond privately, please use firstname.lastname@example.org (apologies to any Joe Browns out there)
I just got a job close enough to my home in Toronto that I can ride my bike to it. Yay! But is it likely to get stolen? [more inside]

My wife adores cabbages, and we both love Toronto and Cabbagetown. Last time we were there we didn't get a chance to grab a Cabbagetown flag, but we've always wanted one. I've been calling the Cabbagetown BIA at the phone number at this blog post, but they have not yet responded to my voicemails or emails. The latter link says you can pick them up at 237 Carlton Street. But I'm in NYC, not Toronto, and cannot get back to Canada anytime soon. How can I get one and have it shipped home? I'm more than happy to pay for it, the shipping, the customs, whatever.

I'm gearing up to sell my car in Toronto and I'd like to get a fresh paint job. Or, at least, touch up the spots that are showing wear due to rust near the rear wheels and some white paint (on a red car) from bumping into the pillar in my parking space a couple of times. Note: I don't actually want to do body repair, just paint (I'm not trying to conceal the dings in the body, just to freshen up the look). Have any GTA Mefites had work like this done at a place they would recommend? I live downtown, but don't mind traveling to the 905 for good, affordable work. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
Where in Toronto can I find (1) an extra large size toque with ear coverage (like the Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon) or (2) size 15 waterproof warm winter boots (like the Sorel 1964 PAC T)? I've already visited or called several places (MEC, Get Outside, Patagonia) to no result. [more inside]

For a Texas boy, I got pretty good at dressing for the weather in London and Seattle. But now I've moved to Toronto, where I've found my clothes inadequate for the cold of the previous couple of weeks. I was also possessed to plan on a visit to Ottawa's Winterlude in a few weeks where I have been warned I might just freeze to death. What new clothes do I need and where do I get them? [more inside]
We found ms scruss' clarinet in a recent house clearout, and we'd like to get it playable again. It's probably not worth too much, and we're on a budget anyway. Suggestions for what to do with it are welcomed. [more inside]

Toronto Mefites! I'm currently in balmy western Pennsylvania, with plans today (Sunday, December 22) to drive into Oakville, Ontario. Oakville is in Halton, about 38 miles southwest of Toronto. How difficult is that going to be in light of this weekend's ice storm?

I'm turning 29 this month. Hooray! Fortunately, I've just moved much closer to downtown Toronto. Unfortunately, my apartment is now too small to host a birthday party. I'm looking for a good bar to host a come-and-go sort of informal party on Sunday, December 15th. [more inside]

Been reading a few articles about tap water vs. bottled water, and some of these mention how tap water is at least the same, or even better (1, 2, 3, and 4) and of course, less expensive. I live in Toronto and I buy PC's bottled water (simply because it doesn't have that artifical taste that other brands have in my opinion), but I'm starting to look at other options. Between bottled water, water cooler bottles, and installing a tap filter, which is my best option?
With the change from the default broadcasting of cable signals in analog to digital, my mom has fallen into a terrible television conundrum and would like some advice on what the better/best alternatives are to Rogers Cable in Toronto. I'm a front-end web developer (HTML, CSS, jQuery) just starting out. I have a good portfolio from doing work for friends and a few businesses. I'm self-taught and therefore lacking some of the confidence that comes with the feedback you get in a structured learning environment or working tightly with other developers. I want to get in with a web development company/agency that has a great work environment. What would you say are the best web dev companies in Toronto in terms of great work/life balance, great (bright, comfortable) office space, and mentorship/on-going learning opportunities? (Opportunities to work abroad with the company would also be welcome!). Thanks for the info!
Yesterday I moved into a room in an old Toronto house that has some character but a lot of issues. A couple friends are planning on joining me on the top two floors starting November 1st. A friend of one of them has lived on the mainfloor for seven years and is quite attached to the house. But the landlord appears to be absentee and what I learned yesterday gives me further misgivings about what we may be entering into. [more inside]
I know a woman who is extremely talented in making baked desserts. She wants to open a home-based business. How can she go about doing that in a city like Toronto? Are there any legal/accounting stuff that she needs to know about beforehand? Is there some sort of governmental health supervision program that needs to see the house where she does her work? Can you give me some tips on how she can go about selling her product legally?
It's a huge hassle for anyone who has a 9-5 job and no savings to pursue a masters or a pHD in a reputable/respectable college or university, no matter what country s/he's in. If that's my case, how can I make it work if I live in Toronto, Canada? (I'm interested in reading your thoughts and experiences even if they're not about Toronto per se).
As an addendum to my previous question, I am now looking for some good furniture choices in the Toronto downtown area (central York, near Davisville Avenue to be specific). It is important that it is good quality / relatively cheap and that the place delivers it to the apartment for a nominal fee. I'd rather buy new stuff because I'm a little uncomfortable with getting used furniture. Any suggestions/advice? [more inside]

For someone (and his accompanying elderly mother) who is in search of a good apartment rental in Toronto, what are the best online/offline options to go about it (apart from hiring a real estate agent)? It is difficult for him to roam about the streets looking for posters (although I've read that this is probably the best way to find good deals) because he needs to find it before he arrives. It can be as small as a studio apartment, but it is important that the neighborhood is safe and that the price is somewhat cheap. It is also important that the flat is comfortable for the elderly mother (proximity to subway stations, bus stations, hospitals, stores, ...) since the son will be spending most of his time at work. I have a vague memory from the early 50s of travelling along Front Street or Wellington Street in Toronto with my father. Looking south toward Union Station I can remember seeing small (two or three foot high) piles of black stuff on the road, and men with shovels . My father told me it was coke (the “solid carbonaceous residue derived from destructive distillation of coal” as Wikipedia defines it). [more inside]
