I backed it up, now to get it back

What is the best way to restore my backup to a new(er) iMac? Can you restore from Time Machine that has a slightly newer OS version than the new(er) computer? Or if you restore from a different backup that is a few days older but that would restore the matching OS, will Time Machine still work properly and let me update the missing recent work? How do I get non-Time-Capsule networked back-up working?

I need to back up three Macs and an external iTunes library and want to do it via a drive attached to my router. My brain doesn't understand networking. I think I have all the required parts of the puzzle, but I'm clearly not understanding something important. [more inside]

It's basically a haystack made of needles.

I have a ton of old, ad hoc backups from a variety of old computers going back years. I've been very good about keeping the data around and alive, safe from bitrot, but not at organizing it or keeping it useful. How do I sort through this heap of disorganized data and make it useful? [more inside]

Backing up an open disk image?

Based on your answers to my prior question, I keep sensitive files on my Mac in an encrypted disk image. I back up my Mac to Time Machine, plus a local external Superduper! clone, and to Crashplan. How do I ensure those backups accurately record the disk image--do I have to eject the disk image or will the backups copy the open (mounted) disk? [more inside]

two tickets back to the friend zone, please.

A friend recently confessed that they have Seriously Distracting Feelings for me. Nothing remotely more-than-friendly has ever occurred between us, and they've been married for as long as I can remember. My only option is to pretend like it never happened, but I'm struggling with disappointment and resentment because the introduction of this dynamic frequently changes the foundation of the accompanying friendship and I don't want that to happen. What are some tactics I can employ to make sure that I'm able to move forward respectfully, privately, and (most importantly) at arm's length? Can I take steps to ensure our friendship will mostly go back to how it was before, or is trying to do so an exercise in futility given the circumstances? [more inside]

Need a Crashplan plan.

I’m finally signing up for an unlimited Crashplan package this weekend. This is my first time using web storage for any of my backup needs. Can you let me know if I’m thinking correctly about 1) what I back up online and 2) what makes sense for backing up in the future? [more inside]

Which home NAS with online backup for 2013?

I have a mess of ad-hoc backup systems, none of which “just work”. I would like to have a NAS that quietly backs up the cross-platform content I have, and also mirrors it online securely. I should probably budget for about 1-2 TB. I have no problem doing geeky setup stuff, but the less routine stuff I have to remember, the better. System details follow. [more inside]

Merging iTunes across Time Machine images

Once I had backed my iTunes up using Time Machine, I deleted some music on my computer to free up space. I've since added new music, which Time Machine has also backed up, but in discrete images. external drive gone awol

I have a 2TB Western Digital "My Book Essentials" external drive for Time Machine that has gone missing. Its icon sat on the desktop till sometime in the last day or two, and now Snow Leopard and Disk Utility can't find it anywhere. I have rebooted, unplugged/replugged, changed USB ports, changed outlets for its power adapter, etc. It is still running as usual, nice and quiet with its tiny light on. It still powers up when plugged in. No weird sounds. I plugged it into a Windows computer and it was recognized as an unreadable USB device (since it is formatted for Mac). So apparently it is still a functional something. My secondary TimeMachine drive, also a WD My Book, is still recognized and running as usual. Any help or ideas? Thanks!
